Welcome to Litsy!

These short stories about women in Haiti or its diaspora are painful and poignant, sometimes hopeful and sometimes despairingly sad. Some feel so real I thought they were autobiographical. They are not but I felt I learned so much about the author from reading them. This is the first I‘ve read by Gay and it was so good. I look forward to reading another one by her. Having just finished a book of short stories about Nepal, with what I felt were ⬇️

This is an excellent collection of stories about the Haitian diaspora. The subject matter is often difficult and disturbing, but the writing is brilliant and vivid.

Roxane is one of my favorite writers and gets a love of love on Litsy, so it‘s no surprise that I loved her debut. She packs quite a punch in under 3 hours of book! There was a bit more erotica than I like, but she is equally deft with fiction and nonfiction. I can now recommend her whole canon. 😉

Amazing!!!

This was a powerful collection of short stories. A definite content warning for sexual assault for people considering reading this one! Gay has woven such a variety of different narratives that centre Haiti or Haitian people, from the mystical to the mundane. Well worth the read! #queerbooks

I finished listening to this as I touched up my nails. This was a collection of short stories about Haitians and Haitian Americans. Each different, and each compelling in its own way. Atmospheric and engaging. Roxane Gay is an undeniably good writer.

Read the first few short stories and love them. Such talent!

Picked up these two lovely gems at City Lights Booksellers yesterday. There were so many I wanted to take home.

Holy crap this collection is so good. I call her Queen Roxane for a reason.

This is heartfelt and packs a punch with its personal and incredible words. I love her words. I adore Roxane Gay. She is a much needed voice and energy and I highly recommend anything she has written.

Quite a gem. Short, some quite short, stories set in/ about Haiti and its people with vivid, sensuous prose. Expect strong women, heartbreak, violence, yearning, lust, sex.

Absolutely stunning writing in this collection of short stories, all related in one way or another to Haiti. Gay is such a precise writer -- some of these stories are short -- just a page or two, but she tells them in a way that makes the reader connect with the characters immediately. Highly recommend. #reversereadathon

Returning these amazing books to my local library. Ayiti was a brilliant collection of early Roxanne Gay stories set in Haiti or about Haitians. The Poet X is a series of poems that tells the story of a teen exploring her creativity and navigating her adolescence.

Ahh how I love Books Are Magic.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Roxane Gay has such a command of the short story format that she is able to bring such depth and complexity in such a short word count. I loved the sensual ‘forbidden‘ love in Of Ghosts and Shadows, but was also floored by the harrowing multigenerational story of life born in conflict in In The Manner of Water or Light. This was a brilliant collection and a great starting point for those new to Gay‘s fiction.

Roxane Gay‘s first book must have recently been rereleased or something. Because it showed up in all my libraries at once. Like all she writes, this was real and deep and occasionally hard to read.

June stats: 11 books, 2600+ pages. Favorites were: Ayiti, A Man Called Ove, The Ask and the Answer. Edit: and Saga! I can‘t forget Saga!
