The Full Cupboard of Life: More from the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency | Alexander McCall Smith
16 posts | 38 read | 7 to read
Here is the fifth novel in the internationally bestselling No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency hit series. Once again we are transported to Gaborone, capital city of Botswana, and into the world of Mma Ramotswe and her friends. THE NO. 1 LADIES DETECTIVE AGENCY. FOR ALL CONFIDENTIAL MATTERS AND ENQUIRIES. SATISFACTION GUARANTEED FOR ALL PARTIES. UNDER PERSONAL MANAGEMENT. Mma Ramotswe and Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni are still engaged, but with no immediate plans to get married. Mma Ramotswe wonders when a wedding date will be named, but she is anxious to avoid putting pressure on her fianc. For indeed he has other things on his mind -- particularly a frightening request (involving a parachute jump) made by Mma Potokwani, the persuasive matron of the orphan farm. Mma Ramotswe herself has weighty matters on her mind. She has been approached by a wealthy lady to check up on several suitors. Are these men interested in her or just her money? This may be difficult to find out, but its just the kind of case Mma Ramotswe likes and she is, as we know, a very intuitive lady. Meanwhile, Mma Makutsi -- plucky assistant detective and deputy manager of the Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors garage -- is moving. Her entrepreneurial venture, the Kalahari Typing School for Men, is thriving and with this new income she has rented two rooms in a house. Her spare time is occupied with planning the move, the dcor and her new life in a house with running water all to herself. In the background of all this is Botswana, a country of empty spaces and echoing skies, a country so beautiful and entrancing that it breaks your heart. Mma Ramotswe has prepared the bush tea and is waiting for us to join her. From the Hardcover edition.

Ruthiella It‘s a great series, though I‘ve only read up to book to book #5 so far! 😀 4y

The one truely nice thing about working in a library that‘s closed to the public - is that the books that you perfect order (to a ridiculous extent - I shelved them by series) stay in perfect order...

AlaMich That would be very soothing to my compulsive soul! 😄 4y
TheKidUpstairs As a library page, I applaud this. It was always so frustrating to shelf read a section and then one day later find it in complete disarray! 4y
Avanders That is so nice .... 4y

Another wonderful story in the series of The No. 1 Detective Agency. I do have to say that less mysteries were solved, and there was more to be done regarding ongoing character development and the answering of philosophical and day-by-day drama questions (I.E. how to get out of an uncomfortable arrangement and still not lose face?), but I think they are still important. #recentlyread #nospoilers #ladydetective

I love this series. I‘ve seen some call them cozy mysteries, but I think they‘re more a window into a quieter life in Botswana. Yes, it‘s about a detective agency, but in this book there‘s no real mystery. It‘s a story about a wonderful lady, her fiancé, and the amusing things that happen to her. I always feel good when I‘m reading them.

#LitsyWalkers, I got out for a walk before our forecasted rain arrived. Sietje hates stopping mid-Walk. ??

Another good addition to the Ladies No. 1 Detective Agency series. These are like comfort food, very soothing and calming. This also handles my #femaledetective prompt for #booked2019.

#literarydinnerparty Fiction characters or authors? And then I remembered AMS's gentle, generous heroine Mma Precious Ramotswe. For my literary dinner party I'm going to Botswana, where Mma Ramotswe will cook pumpkin stew for dinner, dessert will be Mma Potokwane's fruitcake with red bush tea, and maybe while Mma Makutsi expounds on life, I can bounce Itumelang Clovis Radiphuti on my knee (the only purring baby in Botswana). 🇧🇼

Dragon Sounds idyllic! I would love to join you! 😀👍 7y

Another solid entry in the series. There's nothing riveting or too exciting about these stories, but they're so definitely relaxing and enjoyable.

Any #AlexanderMcCallSmith fans in the Litsy House? Here's 9 of them from our donor's collection. I should really get to this series at some point. Does the series get better as it goes along? #LitsyLovesLibraries

mrsmarch You've got books from 2 series there. I much prefer No 1 Ladies Detective Agency to Isabel Dalhousie; but his best work hands-down is the serial Scotland Street novels he's done for The Scotsman. 8y
Tanner I really enjoy the Isabel Dalhousie series. 8y
anneofgreentables I agree completely with @mrsmarch 8y

scripturient I like his books, some series more than others. And I agree with @Libby1 - he is such a nice man! We met him twice at the Edinburgh book festival and my students were so cute after his wonderful reading as they said they'd love to ask him to come back to the hotel with us and read them bedtime stories. 😂😂 8y
