pickThis book shows how a neighborhood reacts to a shooting of a young black man named Tariq by a white shooter. There are multiple first person POVs. When the shooter is let go under a self-defense clause with Tariq's “gun“ no where in sight, the media and a DC politician descend upon the neighborhood. I like how the author presented the fact that even if you were at the scene details can be misconstrued. The book also asks, “Who was Tariq?“
So bookish friends…I need a reading challenge for the new year. Got any suggestions?

pickThis book is about a young black teen who was shot by a white men. This book is told from multiple view points throughout the community. The community is telling the reader how it went down. It was an absolutely heartbreaking read. I started the follow up book last night “Light it Up.”

The tagged book was told from multiple POVs in short chapters. A powerful read. I'm crap at explaining why I like books.

This book was about a teen whose name was Tiriq. He was part of a gang called ''Kings'', one day he was hanging out with his friends, and a guy came and shot him. That day changed everybody's life. And from that day all his friends are trying to figure out how to live without him.
This book was 325 pages. And as Ms.Karpyshyn said, she will count every 100 pages or so as 1 book.

Had a great month of #readblackwomen The Color Purple and How It Went Down were my favorites.
pickIt was a slow start for me because the format took a little getting used to. It's told from many POVs (7+) for about 1-3 pages, so it took a while for me to sort people out. Each voice was well-written and developed IMO. Like life, there wasn't a neatly wrapped-up ending and there were still lots of unanswered questions which really added to the power of the book

pickI'm using this book for past present & future Oct challenges bc I'm running out of books I've read or own to use for these things!! 😳😫 How It Went Down describes the fictional shooting of a young black boy from #multipleperspectives w/ #firstpersonnarrator(s). I enjoyed the exploration of the subject and didn't find it too tough to handle, if that's a worry some ppl have. I'm taking the idea of #hallowedgrounds pretty seriously for this one. ❤️

This book is heartbreaking. It's told from many different perspectives and I like how you really can't tell what happened yet. The weather is getting rougher here. Wind is crazy. We still have power unlike my whole family. I have all the blinds closed so I can't see the trees bending and swishing. 💨
I have to teach a class on this book tonight, so I'm making notes while doing laundry. This presentation is part of a thought project as a final for a library science class. Here's the riddle I've been working on all week - how do you run a book club when no one has read the book? Stay tuned, I guess.

pickMoving, bold, and stunning. Lots of people think that YA can't or shouldn't be poetic, political, or grounded in the experiences of people of color - this book proves them wrong on every level.
pickI finished this on my way to work today. This is such an important and underrated book. I just finished THE HATE U GIVE, and I was concerned that it would cover a lot of the same ground since they're both about the unjustified shooting of a teen African-American boy. They each treat the subject in completely different ways, and both narratives are extremely important and worth reading. The variety of perspectives is especially well-done here.
When sixteen-year-old Tariq Johnson dies from two gunshot wounds, his community is thrown into an uproar. Tariq was black. The shooter, Jack Franklin, is white.
In the aftermath of Tariq's death, everyone has something to say, but no two accounts of the events line up. Day by day, new twists further obscure the truth.

pickI read How It Went Down for my school's book club this month. This book was a tear-jerker on every page. Getting to know the characters inside and out was enjoyable and it really spoke to modern-day urban life and politics. It had the innocence of children and the wisdom of elders and everything in between while still retaining a realistic vibe. I absolutely loved this book and would recommend it to high schoolers and young adults.

pickI'm not usually a "ripped from the headlines" sort of reader. I'm glad I ignored that tendency. This would be a great addition to Criminal Law classes in law school. It would have taught me more than many of the cases we read.
Starting this today and I have a feeling I might finish it today, too.
I was leaning over him when he died. My hands on his chest. My palms felt his last breath move inside him. His chest rose and fell, and then kept falling, like it could carry us both straight down through the earth.
