"The Nowhere Child is a well-written thriller that avoids the clichs of the genre. The characters are interesting and believable and the book kept me reading up to the satisfying conclusion." --Phillip Margolin, New York Times bestselling author of The Third VictimWinner of the Victorian Premier's Literary Award, The Nowhere Child is screenwriter Christian White's internationally bestselling debut thriller of psychological suspense about a woman uncovering devastating secrets about her family--and her very identity...Kimberly Leamy is a photography teacher in Melbourne, Australia. Twenty-six years earlier, Sammy Went, a two-year old girl vanished from her home in Manson, Kentucky. An American accountant who contacts Kim is convinced she was that child, kidnapped just after her birthday. She cannot believe the woman who raised her, a loving social worker who died of cancer four years ago, crossed international lines to steal a toddler. On April 3rd, 1990, Jack and Molly Went's daughter Sammy disappeared from the inside their Kentucky home. Already estranged since the girl's birth, the couple drifted further apart as time passed. Jack did his best to raise and protect his other daughter and son while Molly found solace in her faith. The Church of the Light Within, a Pentecostal fundamentalist group who handle poisonous snakes as part of their worship, provided that faith. Without Sammy, the Wents eventually fell apart. Now, with proof that she and Sammy are in fact the same person, Kim travels to America to reunite with a family she never knew she had. And to solve the mystery of her abduction--a mystery that will take her deep into the dark heart of religious fanaticism where she must fight for her life against those determined to save her soul...

Don't think I've ever been so deeply and inexorably hooked into a book in so few sentences! And I stayed that way from first page to the last! The fate of Sammy Went is revealed via flashbacks and MC Kim's experiences visiting her original family. It's pacy, gripping and utterly engrossing, featuring some great characters (Travis Eckles giving major Benji Ovich vibes!) Loved the revelations at the end! Cracking read, thoroughly enjoyed it!

I was up way too late last night reading this story about an Australian woman who learns that she may have been kidnapped as a child and has a family in Kentucky. There‘s lots to like about this book including the main character and although it doesn‘t 100% deliver on its promise, I clearly couldn‘t put it down. On a school night. That‘s an endorsement in my book.

I really enjoyed this one. I read it compulsively because I HAD to find out what happened to Sammy Went. I love White‘s ability to develop characters so deeply so quickly. I didn‘t love it as much as The Wife and The Widow but it was still a quick and well-developed read.

Interesting. Would make a great movie or TV series. I got a feel for the author when I read his authors note at the end. Also his acknowledgments. I think I like him. 😊. Hope he does well.

Grocery shopping & new book day! I also treated myself to sushi & sake even though I was attempting to do my second alcohol free day in a row since covid. The new book is from my local (to work) library that over looks Lake Macquarie & I am reading it for my book club called Satan‘s Little Book Coven. I am grocery shopping after at Harris Farm Markets. My favourite grocery shop. I hope your day has been as good as mine. What have you been up to?

MrsMalaprop Sounds like a 👍 day. Mine‘s been pretty good too. Got my nails done & found a new hairdresser. I am on my 5th alcohol-free day in a row, after 2 weeks of over-indulgent holiday time 🙌. 4y

A really solid debut!! An Australian woman finds out that she may actually be Sammy Went, a two-year old girl who disappeared in Kentucky long ago. Family secrets, a creepy church, and a twist I didn't see coming until *right* before it happened. Very entertaining! 👏🏽

PS: took the subway for the first time since COVID 😱 and it was bizarre. While I tried not to touch anything for obvious reasons, it was also the cleanest A train I've ever seen!

Brilliant! I loved every second of this book and the final reveal was totally unexpected and so well done. Each character was exceptionally fleshed out and believable, the story compelling and the pages kept turning long into the night. Top book!!!

Picked this one last week, on a whim & have to admit the storyline made me experience a range of emotions after a really long time.

An intricate & unconventional spin on classic child kidnapping with a splash of cult & knots of ss..snakes.
I particularly loved the portrayal of the myriad personalities residing within a single person. All in all, people & this world are in an agathokakological chaos & the synergy balance is precariously delicate.

I was hooked from the first chapter. Imagine sitting in a coffee shop minding your own business when a stranger approaches you saying that you are Sammy Went a girl who went missing suspected kidnapped as a young girl. This is the first you have heard of it and as you start looking into it, more and more truths come out and it seems you are the missing girl. Who took you and why?! A haunting page turner I struggled to put it down!

On the road...
We stayed in Canberra last night, on our way back home to Melbourne.

As I'm listening to this book, 75% through and getting closer to the reveal, I'm realizing I have a lot of questions. I must be missing some details whilst listening, so as my friend lent me the book, im now reading it & I've had to almost begin it again!
Well this time I'm picking up a lot more and my previous questions are answered.....
Hhmmm, who dunnit??

Eggs This is so pretty it‘s surreal! 5y

Curiouser_and_curiouser @Eggs Yes! We saw hours and hours of rolling hills, beautiful countryside, towns and beaches. I was in the backseat so I have the car to frame my pics, but I could read with no queasiness there so I was super happy. 5y
Curiouser_and_curiouser @sudi Oh so beautiful. I have so many photos of our journey up the coast from our 17 day trip. It was very healing and energizing to be traveling through these views for days. It was a lovely dose of country life. 5y

Another Australian book after finishing Shirley Barrett's Rush Oh! yesterday.

I downloaded around a dozen audiobooks for our 2 week stay in Queensland & noticed that my friend, with whom we're holidaying, was reading this book, so I've begun mine on audio so we can discuss it.

Set in my hometown of Melbourne, only a couple of suburbs from me in Coburg, as well as Manson, Kentucky, U.S. it's a mystery/thriller about a little girl gone missing.

Imagine waking up one morning and everything you know is a lie and there was possibly a life before in a totally different country. Kim could have been sammy. Kim journeys back to where her life could have started to meet with a family she knew nothing about. Brilliant book full of the unexpected. The book goes between what was happening at the time of the disappearance and present day. I will be adding this author to my ones to watch. 💜

I didn‘t love this book but didn‘t hate it either and I did read until the end so that I would know what happened. But I just wanted it to end fast so I could move on and start to read something else. The story was ok but I just didn‘t connect with the characters at all, the writer didn‘t develop them enough.

The Nowhere Child by Christian White is a thriller and was originally released in Australia in 2018 but makes its 2019 debut in the US on Jan. 22nd. You meet Kim an Aussie and someone comes from America and claims that Kim is Sammy West, who was abducted from her home in Kentucky when she was two years old. This book is a very fast read and I was hoping for a little more suspense and thrilling nature (The book Verity by Colleen Hoover ruined me).

What a page turner!! I practically finished this I‘m one sitting! It hooks you in from the start when a stranger approaches Kim and tells her he thinks that this Australian woman is actually the grown up version of a kidnapped child from a small Kentucky town! Alternating between past and present, I thoroughly enjoyed this!! #WiseMen approved! #SeasonsReadings

An excellent missing child/uncertain identity narrative. The Nowhere Child is that perfect balance of original and familiar. It‘s a comfortable story you‘ve read before, but reframed just so, that it seems new and exciting. It hit a number of my favourite marks- past and present structure, cults, and a fair few identity puzzles. Mostly, it has a solid, satisfying ending. A great read.
