Killing Mr. Griffin
Killing Mr. Griffin | Lois Duncan
12 posts | 44 read | 11 to read
They only meant to scare him. Mr. Griffin is the strictest teacher at Del Norte High, with a penchant for endless projects and humiliating his students. Even straight-A student Susan can't believe how mean he is to the charismatic Mark Kinney. So when her crush asks Susan to help a group of students teach a lesson of their own, she goes along. After all, it's a harmless prank, right? But things don't go according to plan. When one "accident" leads to another, people begin to die. Susan and her friends must face the awful truth: one of them is a killer. Leave the lights on when reading this classic thriller! This new edition features modernized text and a new introduction by Lois Duncan, the master of teen horror.

Irony: A teacher in my school district wants to ban this book because, well, it's about a plot to kill a teacher! 😱 Has she read the book? No. 🙄

Another teacher reference: If you've never seen this 1988 McDonald's commercial, you should. Have kleenex nearby.

Aimeesue I remember that book vividly! Didn‘t make me plot with my friends to kill a teacher though. 🙄 2mo

dabbe @Aimeesue You mean you had willpower? But we must protect the students from everything because we think they can't handle it! 😱 2mo
Aimeesue @dabbe I think it‘s more that they‘re afraid of giving kids IDEAS. Which is sad, especially for a teacher. That‘s your JOB! Egad. 2mo
dabbe @Aimeesue 🎯. 2mo
bthegood First, commercial is sweet! Second, this reminds me of movie “Teaching Mrs. Tingle“ which was originally “Killing Mrs Tingle“ but it was after Columbine so title and other parts reworked. The writer (Kevin Williamson) states it is not based on a book but the similarities make me wonder. 🙂 (edited) 2mo
Eggs First time seeing this commercial! 👏🏻👏🏻 2mo

Mr. Griffin is a strict English teacher at Del Norte high school who often humiliates his students when their work is not up to his expectations. When a group of students set out to teach their malicious teacher a lesson, things go terribly wrong…

ravenlee I loved this book as a younger reader, but I tried to reread it a few years ago and really couldn‘t get into it. I‘ve been thinking about unshelving it but just can‘t decide. 1y
Eggs @DieAReader 🤗🙌🏻 1y
Eggs @dabbe Haven‘t heard of that one ☝️ 1y
Eggs @Andrew65 Thanks 😊 1y
Eggs @ravenlee There‘s something about it I like; might be that it was a world before texting, social media, and constant internet interference. Might be a good LFL book 1y
dabbe @Eggs It's the only “horror“ one she wrote after her daughter was murdered. Talk about unfair irony. After that she mostly wrote children's books because she couldn't go to the place anymore. They caught the guy (he admitted to other killings, too) after she died. So sad, but MAN! I loved her books; so did my students. I think I'll have to go back and read them again. #nostalgia 🤗🤗🤗 1y
Eggs Oh no that‘s horrible! I can‘t imagine 😔😩 @dabbe (edited) 1y

Book 59🎧
In my snooping I learnt that apparently this is a banned book! I actually think it spot lights for people how easily it is to be manipulated and stop & think a bit more! 🤔
Lois has gripped me yet again!
But come on! Give us the “true” dad answer!😩😂

MaleficentBookDragon I LOVED Duncan as a kid. Daughters of Eve and Summer of Fear were favorites of mine. I forgot that she also wrote I know what you Did Last Summer (the movie was actually much better IMO). 3y
BeeMagical @MaleficentBookDragon I am HOOKED! I‘m starting Summer of Fear today🙌🏻🖤 I want to go on a used book hunt for all her thrillers😩 3y
BeeMagical @MaleficentBookDragon I‘m not very far into Summer of Fear yet (about an hour) but I‘m getting total “Orphan” vibes from this! Hooked yet again!🙌🏻☠️ 3y

MaleficentBookDragon @BeeMagical once you finish the book you have to find the TV movie with Linda Blair. Don‘t watch the trailer until you‘re done. https://youtu.be/HeDCg1CiXvA 3y

This was a little reminiscent of We Need to talk about Kevin in some ways with some twisted teens. A plan to kidnap a teacher goes awry and sinister. Definitely kept me interested and curious.

I'd say this was between a pick and a so-so. It was originally published in 1978 and was updated for our current time, which I believe was a mistake as there were inconsistencies. It was otherwise a good teen psychopath story. 🤤😉

1. I remember being so scared reading the tagged book above as a teenager. Now I stick with psychological thrillers that scare me more about people than truly scare me. 2. The Sixth Sense- yes I realize most people don‘t consider this a scary movie but I had nightmares for months after watching 3. Apple Cider and Football 4. Wasn‘t super hyped on Girl On The Train

This was a quick and good read. It was touching to read how misguided perceptions can ruin lives. Alas, poor Mr Griffin. :(

BookishMarginalia I loved Lois Duncan & read everything she wrote when I was a teen! 8y

So I vaguely remember seeing this movie and it was ehh. Years later realized it was a book I read in my formative years and that it deserved a reread. Not so much fun. These kids were truly disastrous. Instead of studying hard, they instead decide to scare their English teacher. You can see my original review on good reads if you are interested. Themes still hold today. #octphotochallenge #disasterouskids

AWahle I loved Lois Duncan's books when I was in high school. The girls from The Daughters of Eve also belong in the #disasterouskids category. 8y
Smangela Loved this one too! Lois Duncan was my first foray into anything scary 8y

It's a different experience reading this as an adult but it still works in some ways, especially the last few chapters. RIP Lois Duncan
