The Mystery of Three Quarters: the New Hercule Poirot Mystery
The Mystery of Three Quarters: the New Hercule Poirot Mystery | Sophie Hannah
30 posts | 34 read | 15 to read
The world's most beloved detective, Hercule Poirot - the legendary star of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express and most recently The Monogram Murders and Closed Casket-returns in a stylish, diabolically clever mystery set in 1930's London. Returning home after lunch one day, Hercule Poirot finds an angry woman waiting outside his front door. She demands to know why Poirot has sent her a letter accusing her of the murder of Barnabas Pandy, a man she has neither heard of nor ever met. Poirot has also never heard of a Barnabas Pandy, and has accused nobody of murder. Shaken, he goes inside, only to find that he has a visitor waiting for him - a man who also claims also to have received a letter from Poirot that morning, accusing him of the murder of Barnabas Pandy... Poirot wonders how many more letters of this sort have been sent in his name. Who sent them, and why? More importantly, who is Barnabas Pandy, is he dead, and, if so, was he murdered? And can Poirot find out the answers without putting more lives in danger?

Enjoyed the book! My expectations were very low since its not from the original Agatha Christie... But i enjoyed it thoroughly.... The twists came pouring in until the last chapter! It was an amazing ride 😍

4 💫💫💫💫 Hercurly Poirot starts to get mysterious people visiting him stating he mailed them a letter accusing them of killing someone. A whole chapter was dedicated to them bickering about how Poirot never mailed a letter. This is definitely not Agatha Christie's writing but it was still interesting. It felt choppy the chapters didn't flow easily for me. #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

I can understand the intellectual challenge presented by writing an Agatha Christie character. Although I‘ve read all three of her new Hercule Poirot novels, I wish she would return to her own authorial voice. I found this one overwrought, and under written.

Four seemingly unrelated people receive a letter accusing them of murder. HP is involved as the letters are signed with his name. The little grey cells are sorely taxed.

So this was between a Pick and a So-So. I‘m currently leaving it at a so-so. I had to put this down for a couple weeks then pick it back up to finish. I just knew it wasn‘t AC writing. And it was 100 pages too long. AC‘s books are always on the shorter end so it was weird to then have a longer book. I don‘t know if I‘ll read any additional books by the author.

emtobiasz Agreed. I enjoy the new series Hannah is writing, but there‘s definitely no mistaking it for Christie‘s originals. The length is a big part of that. 5y

TFW you walk into #bookclub and as soon as the meeting starts someone says: I HATED THIS BOOK. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course, but IMO it‘s not a #goodhabit to shut down discussion this way. For my part, I thought it was fine. Not the same panache as the original author, but that‘s a tough act to follow. #selfimprovementsept

Thank you to everyone who sent me ❤️❤️ yesterday. I love this community. 🥰

Love Agatha Christie for a long time & this is the first time I I read this rewriting by Sophie Hannah. The writing isn't bad especially first half of the book, it was fast paced & I got hooked into the story, but it just lacks a certain charm and that long explaining at the end felt more like a lecture LOL, I just wanted to skip ahead. It's between a SoSo & Pick for me...

Finished this book a while back. I enjoyed Hercule Poirot and his “little grey cells”. Not quite as well done as Agatha Christie herself, but still a good read for those of us who have read all the original Christie novels. 👍

These just get better and better. This is by far the best of the 3 in my opinion. I enjoyed Poirot and Catchpool's working relationship and the characters were fun and frustrating. Oh yeah, the mystery was good too. 😊

The third outing for Hannah‘s take on Hercule Poirot started off well, but degenerated into a convoluted plot which ultimately didn‘t pay off. 3⭐️

Thanks to NetGalley & publishers, HarperCollins UK, for the opportunity to review an ARC.

Not quite Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot, but I felt it was in the spirit at least. And the story was both intriguing and entertaining so I'll class it as a pick and would read more of Sophie Hannah.

Have I mentioned lately how much I LOVE Hercule Poirot?? Sophie Hannah has written another fantastic novel starring Poirot (with the blessing of the Agatha Christie estate), and I think it‘s her best. The ending was so clever! I totally did not see it coming. But for me, it‘s all about Poirot‘s charming arrogance and little grey cells. ☺️

In case you‘re wondering, you don‘t need to read Hannah‘s other 2 books before this one. It stands alone.

Freespirit @LiteraryinLititz I really enjoyed this also...I haven't read the previous two books. It felt like Agatha wrote it😊Will look forward to her next book. 6y

I honestly can‘t tell if I love this series because it‘s good or if it takes me back to my childhood excitement of new Poirot novels to read!

Didn‘t like the first one in this series but decided to give this one a go. Lovely writing but I wont be reading anymore. Not for me. @MrsMalaprop

CarolynM I haven't tried this series, but I know the feeling. Sometimes you just have to keep reading a series even when you don't think it's very good. 6y

I enjoyed The Mystery of the Three Quarters, it‘s an intriguing mystery. Having read many of the Poirot novels, this is my first of the re-visited series and I was interested to see how it compared. Ms Hannah has managed to capture the atmosphere of Agatha Christie's series with twists, turns and red herrings as there were in the original series.

While it does not have the same depth as Agatha Christie‘s Poirot, it‘s a good entertaining read

I really liked this. The mystery was good, the characters were interesting and the narrator meant that it didn‘t feel like a Poirot pastiche/parody. I‘d read the first Hannah Poirot and had some doubts about the voice so to speak. This meant I hadn‘t searched out the the second - I‘ll be going back for that now as I enjoyed this.

This is the third book in the Hercule Poirot series by Hannah, and I think that is the weakest so far (because of the spoilers - I can‘t tell why I think so) ... but still fun to read it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finished this Poirot mystery this morning- 4 seemingly unconnected people receive letters purportedly from Poirot accusing them of the murder of Barnabas Pandy. Each accosts Poirot and he is drawn in to investigate. Perhaps a bit “lighter” than a true Christie Poirot and I prefer Hastings to Catchpool as a sidekick- also I miss Miss Lemon. However, entertaining and fun. I recommend the Monogram Murders as well.

Just starting this ARC due out on August 18- good so far- 3 people accuse Hercule Poirot of writing them letters accusing them of murder. Loved the Monogram Murder by the same author- authorized by the Christie estate. Love Christie!
