Ninety-Nine Glimpses of Princess Margaret
Ninety-Nine Glimpses of Princess Margaret | Craig Brown
14 posts | 9 read | 19 to read
A witty and profound portrait of the most talked-about English royal She made John Lennon blush and Marlon Brando tongue-tied. She iced out Princess Diana and humiliated Elizabeth Taylor. Andy Warhol photographed her. Jack Nicholson offered her cocaine. Gore Vidal revered her. Francis Bacon heckled her. Peter Sellers was madly in love with her. For Pablo Picasso, she was the object of sexual fantasy. Princess Margaret aroused passion and indignation in equal measures. To her friends, she was witty and regal. To her enemies, she was rude and demanding. In her 1950s heyday, she was seen as one of the most glamorous and desirable women in the world. By the time of her death in 2002, she had come to personify disappointment. One friend said he had never known an unhappier woman. The tale of Princess Margaret is Cinderella in reverse: hope dashed, happiness mislaid, life mishandled. Such an enigmatic and divisive figure demands a reckoning that is far from the usual fare. Combining interviews, parodies, dreams, parallel lives, diaries, announcements, lists, catalogues, and essays, Craig Browns Ninety-Nine Glimpses of Princess Margaret is a kaleidoscopic experiment in biography and a witty meditation on fame and art, snobbery and deference, bohemia and high society.

This is a famous photograph of Princess Margaret taken by her husband Tony Armstrong-Jones, a professional photographer. Her love shines through her eyes. Also her boldness, bohemian nature and sense of humor. This biography combined interviews, parodies, dreams, lists, catalogs, diaries and essays. Glamorous, beautiful but never found her way in this world.Sad. Helena Bonham-Carter was excellent in “The Crown” as Margaret.#booked2022 #aboutarealroyal

I was not sure what to expect going into this book, but it was not what I got. I knew, generally, about her life going in. In stories and article and some quotes, I learned more. I also got tricked by a few of the fake sections (it talked about someone who wanted to marry her and then there was a fake press article about their married life).

Reading with the hubby tonight! He's reading a real book, not listening to an audiobook!

I'm using my book bean because baby does not like it when I rest a book on my belly! 💙

After watching The Crown I have become obsessed with Princess Margaret. Starting this Christmas gift from my mom.

This book had me through the first third or so. The short chapters in a variety of styles, including what-if (what if Margaret had become queen instead of Elizabeth?), worked well. However, the second half was not very good, and it became increasingly difficult not to see each chapter as an anecdote lifted from someone else‘s diary, memoir, or letter. I think 49 glimpses would have been more than enough. ⭐️⭐️-1/2

I'm not particularly keen on reading about royalty, but I'd heard so much about this that I wanted to give it a go. She really was quite the, er, character.

emilyhaldi Loved this book! Margaret was a trip! 6y
