Master and Apprentice is a great character study, though I wouldn't put it in my top ten favorite Star Wars novels. The secondary characters are good and the conclusion is satisfying, but the action is a bit sparse.

blurb
JLaurenceCohen

This book is a great companion to Yoda: Dark Rendezvous, which is about Yoda trying to bring Count Dooku back to the light. Gray parallels Qui-Gon's training of Obi-wan with Qui-Gon's own training under Dooku.

blurb

The audiobook has legit sound effects and the narrator does very good Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor impressions.

This is one of my favorite Star Wars books. I love teenage Obi-Wan & how straight laced he is. This is also when Qui-Gon gets fascinated with the prophecy that will lead to Anakin. Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan are sent to Pijal to help Averross find the Opposition so they don't interfere with Princess Franry's coronation 💙

Really good book by Claudia Gray.
This book delves into the troubled relationship between one of the most famous master and Padawan pairs in the entire Star Wars saga: Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
This thrilling story is a little bit slow but a lot of twists in the plot makes this book quite good.
For sure a book a Star Wars fan should read!!!

Claudia Gray is one of my new favorite Star Wars authors. She has a way of capturing philosophical debates that makes them as exciting as action scenes. I enjoyed the development of Qui Gon and Obi Wan‘s relationship, but I felt there weren‘t enough clues for the resolution of the mystery to have substantial payoff. Still, it was very enjoyable overall with a satisfying conclusion.

Very enjoyable novel about the partnership between Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi before we meet them in Phantom Menace. Very well conceived and well written plot with believable characters and good development of the two Jedi‘s relationship. I was delighted to learn more about the backstory of Qui-Gon Jinn and Count Dooku. The two most criminally underused characters in the Prequel Trilogy!!!

I finished MASTER & APPRENTICE on today‘s #audiowalk! The general setup was fun, as always, and I enjoyed it overall, but I still haven‘t found a Claudia Gray novel that hits me as hard as BLOODLINE did. I shouldn‘t have started there. It‘s made all these other perfectly good books pale in comparison.

ALSO, I‘m disappointed we never learned who Qui-Gon fell in love with. THIS IS IMPORTANT INFORMATION, CLAUDIA GRAY.

Completely forgot to post my review for this amazing book.
Another winner from Claudia Gray! If you loved Leia Princess of Alderaan you will love this !
This story is full of action and digs into the minds of Obi Wan and Qui Gon. We get to see new and different sides of the two and how they became such a good duo. There are many other new characters that fill these pages and make an epic tale.

Branwen Claudia Gray is seriously one of my favorite Star Wars authors! Have you read Lost Stars by her? Freaking fantastic book and I highly recommend it! My favorite Star Wars book EVER!!! 5y
Meaw_catlady @Branwen yes I did!! She is amazing ! I actually had never read any of her books till I met her at San Francisco Comic Con last year! She was so sweet and I bought Princess of Alderaan and loved it!! I found Lost Stars for like 5 bucks somewhere and enjoyed it so much! I also read her other non Star Wars stuff 5y
Branwen @Meaw_catlady YES! ME TOO! HER DEFY THE STARS SERIES?! SO GOOD! OMG! I LIVE FOR THAT SERIES! 5y
Meaw_catlady @Branwen I love your enthusiasm !! I haven‘t read that series yet! I‘m on the last book of her firebird series ! 5y
Branwen @Meaw_catlady Hahaha! Thank you! 🤗💕 Omg. I haven't read the Firebird series and I think I need to find it immediately? 💕📚 You have to read Defy the Stars! It's so good! And has androids! The robots not the phone! 🤣😂 5y

Some great nostalgia for anyone who loved the Jedi Apprentice series as a kid as much as I did. And yet truly it's on take on Obi-Wan & Qui-Gon's relationship which starts off quite tumultuous. Loved the background & insight into this time in the Jedi Order & the story-- full of complicated relationships & characters. Definitely recommend for Star Wars fans. Hoping to read Queen's Shadow soon, too.

1.tagged book, Material girl, Mystical world by Ruby Warrington, The Cactus Sarah Haywood (audiobook), The Borrower Rebecca Makkai (audiobook)
2. Harry Potter and the Sacred Text ( really excellent podcast !!!)
3. Lost Stars by Claudia Gray . My roommate and I like reading Star Wars books and we had a good discussion about this one last night at his bday dinner! He also recommended I listen to the Thrawn audiobook by Timothy Zahn #weekendreads

monalyisha What do you think of “Material Girl, Mystical World“? The tone of the blurb is seriously putting me off but it's maybe a tiny bit how I live my life & maybe that tension deserves some reflection, lol. 5y
Meaw_catlady @monalyisha I‘m only a few pages in and I am enjoying it but I don‘t know how much I can relate it to my life . Because I am a poor working class witch who does not participate in the ritzy New York lifestyle that the author seems to have . 5y

I enjoyed this one way more than I expected!

- Some prophecy hints about what‘s to come in the final installment this December.
- A few twists I didn‘t see coming
- How Dooku‘s slow slide to the Dark Side began, and
- Young Kenobi was so much more entertaining than I ever expected (& Pax & Rahara)

This is one of those that makes me regret that I won‘t be completely caught up with the new cannon books before the final film.

Up next for our #StarWarsBuddyRead we have 2 choices in June. You can read either or both, it‘s up to you.

I haven‘t read either of these yet, so I‘m going to try and read both this month. There are only a few months left until the next and last movie in the trilogy comes out in December, and I personally have quite a few new canon books I want to read yet before then. 😉

May the Force Be With You!

NovelGirl82 I‘m hoping to get to both of them this month! I‘m still finishing up last months now! 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @NovelGirl82 I understand, for once I‘m caught up on this one, but behind on my other bookclub....I can never seem to keep them all caught up at the same time. LOL! 5y

4/5

This was such a fun look into Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi's relationship before The Phantom Menace. My only complaint is that I wish there had been more than a couple of vague references to The Jedi Apprentice series, but I do get that it doesn't really fit with the current canon.

It's a fun read. And the audiobook narrator does a great job with the different voices.

I warned my girlfriend that I would be falling into a Star Wars pit as Episode IX approaches, and it has begun. This was an excellent examination of the tumultuous early days in Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's relationship. A relatively small story, which allows for more focus on the characters. I didn't connect much with the new characters, though.

Ooooo I so enjoyed this. The last couple of Star Wars books I‘ve read have been set earlier and it‘s been fascinating actually, to be pre-Luke and Leia. The relationship between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon was complicated and set against an intriguing backdrop of a royal court and political upheaval. Twists I did no see coming. I love how Claudia Gray writes the Star Wars universe. I already eagerly await her next book! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

@Riveted_Reader_Melissa did you know about these?

Riveted_Reader_Melissa No, but they both look great to me! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Right now I was tentatively thinking about starting next year with the Aftermath Trilogy, and then from there we should be able to read the books pretty much in publication order... unless you have a better idea to organize them. Or do you want to read any of the Rebel‘s books, like A New Dawn mixed in too? 6y
InLibrisVeritas @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I think publication order would be easiest for everyone I think. A New Dawn was the very first book in the new canon I think, so I am okay with adding it in. 6y
See All 13 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @InLibrisVeritas I watched the series Rebels, and it tied into Thrawn and Maul for instance, but I have no idea if their books overlap those parts or if anyone else watched the series or were interested in that spin-off group of characters. I‘m thinking, I may be the only cartoon series watcher 😂 6y
InLibrisVeritas I watched it! But I understand, I think A New Dawn barely overlaps anywhere other than Rebels. Other than Hera being mentioned very briefly in Rogue One. It definitely sits somewhat a part if you dont watch the cartoons. Perhaps we could tag those who have been reading with us and get a general consensus? 6y
InLibrisVeritas @Riveted_Reader_Melissa whoops forgot to tag you in the last message. 😅 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @InLibrisVeritas That‘s ok! That sounds like a good plan, once we get there... I was just thinking about it today as I started Ahsoka, who also has Rebels overlaps, and her book starts with Maul who we know now shows up in some of the newer prequel stories 😂 6y
InLibrisVeritas @Riveted_Reader_Melissa True! I am kind of excited for all the crossover that's happening. One day maybe we will see some of the cartoon characters on the big screen 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @InLibrisVeritas That would be great too! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @InLibrisVeritas I‘d love to have Ahsoka and/or Ezra pop out of the timeline in the future to help/train Rey. And since they have never been cast as live action characters before, and were quite young when they disappeared into time...it would be easy to cast them both now and build on that story. 6y
InLibrisVeritas @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes! That's exactly what I am hoping for, they both have murky storylines that set them up nicely for a movie intro. 6y
Alicia Omgggg I‘m late to the party but thank you for posting! I am so excited for these especially bc I love Claudia Grays books! 6y
