The haunting, unforgettable, ice-blooded thriller that introduced Lucas Davenport is so chilling that you're almost afraid to turn the pages and so mesmerizing you cannot stop.

1. Lucas Davenport from the Prey series by John Sandford. I‘ve been reading this series for decades!
2. Virgil Flowers—one of Lucas‘s friends who got his own spinoff series.
3. Harry Dresden from the Dresden Files. I love a good magical detective!

One of my favorite authors. This was a re-read and I think it‘s been at least 10 years since I read it. Even after all these years it still gets to me. The violence, the unadulterated back and forth of cat and mouse. Davenport is so real and visceral. These novels aren‘t for the faint of heart. If you have sensitivities about specific topics, then I‘d move along. 5⭐️

I love a good detective/serial killer story- and the police side of catching the killer was great.
I don‘t know if I‘ve just become a grumpy old cow- but the misogyny and casual relationship/sex and constant descriptions of women‘s boobs and thighs just spoiled the story for me. Not sure if I‘ll give anymore a go.

MicheleinPhilly EW. Hard pass. 2y
Tove_Reads You most likely have, yes 🤣🤣🤣🤣 2y
Cazxxx I‘m the same I‘ve had enough of misogyny and objectifying women in books or tv/film, especially if it‘s something modern, there‘s no need for it 2y

TrishB @Tove_Reads so true! 2y
merelybookish I find it so infuriating and distracting! I feel like once I notice it, then I am super sensitive to any other whiffs of misogyny. 2y
squirrelbrain Ew, bad news! 2y
Caroline2 Oh that sort of thing gets right up my goat too. 🐐 😠 2y
Ruthiella I suspect they get more enlightened as the series continues and the author becomes more aware. I‘ve noted in reading the Amelia Peabody series that the author became much more sensitive to colonialism and racism in the books published later in the series. 2y
TrishB @Ruthiella I agree- I don‘t think he‘s writing the same now 28 books later. 2y

DGRachel I can still remember where I bought my paperback of that book and started reading it and that was over 25 years ago. Funny the memories that stick with you. 2y

Starting a new to me detective series, because you can never have enough detective series can you. The serial killer has only just started so no opinions as yet!
Glad to report it‘s 20 degrees and a nice cool wind today, phew.

LeahBergen I‘m so glad it‘s not as hot as yesterday! 🥵 2y
MonicaLoves2Read I like this series. I need to get back to reading it. Never enough time for all the books I want to read 😜 2y
TrishB @LeahBergen thankfully it‘s moved on! 2y

Finished this one up! Last 1:04:09 includes #AnyWayYouReadathon (started this morning).

I really enjoyed the story and the perspective of the antagonist. The main thing that bothered me, was the narrator. I think I would have preferred dual narrators with this one. This narrator just didn't help me capture the essence of each character well. He was very one dimensional with his narration.

An ardent Sandford fan, I‘m rereading the Prey series from the beginning. I read his books as they were released, so it has been many years since I have read some of them. I see why I‘m having such a hard time adding more crime series to my list—Sandford is an excellent writer who grabs you from the beginning and never lets go. I usually hold off reading his books until I know I have time to read them in one sitting—too hard to put down!

Karkar I love John Sandford. 4y

#wondrouswednesday @Eggs

1. John Sanford‘s Prey series — I‘m up to 22 of the 30 books. Keep saying I‘m going to start over and catch up. Also 24/25 Sue Grafton Kinsey books.

2. Attending a summer outdoor concert with Mr. B and the fam

3. Early 20th century New York City (my grandmother‘s city and time)

Eggs Wow you‘re tearing up those series!!👏🏻🤗👏🏻 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Eggs Um, not really. Those series both started in the late 1980s. I‘m just old! 🤪 4y

I've been enjoying the Lucas Davenport series, I'm up to #20 now. They're good mysteries that take my mind off of life and they often read like a thriller movie where I'm gripping the couch in anticipation for the good ending. I've stayed up too late with these many times, which for me is a sign of a good story.

I‘m hooked. I loved this book from start to finish. This books introduces us to detective Lucas Davenport, and what an introduction it is. A killer is on the lose and Davenport is hot on his tail. This is a long running series but it is not for the faint hearted.

If anyone in the UK wants to start to read the excellent Lucas Davenport Series by John Sandford, it is currently available for 99p.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/ref=pe_151291_370388231_pe_a4x1_1_reftag/?AS...

DGRachel I still have my original mass market paperback copy of this that I bought back in 1998. Fond memories. :) 6y
Andrew65 @DGRachel These are not easy to get hold of in the UK or cheap (normally). I loved the audiobooks but quite a number of them are not available in audio format. 😔 6y
DGRachel Are there ones you are missing that you want? I own all of them in either paperback or hardback and they are pretty easy to find used. I‘d be more than happy to get you the ones you need. 😊 6y

If anyone wants to get into the excellent Lucas Davenport Series by John Sandford, the first book is free, yes free, in the U.K. at the moment. Far too good a bargain to resist and think this is the case on apple and one or two other book sites too. Might be worth checking on the position if not in the U.K. but hurry don‘t know if this is just today or for a longer period.

Birdsong28 Might give it a go not my usual thing but I might need it for a prompt on my reading challenges next year and as it's free it's win win as if I don't need it for a prompt at least it encourages me to read outside my comfort zone. Thanks 😀📚📖 @Andrew65 6y
Andrew65 @Birdsong28 Gritty crime but a very interesting detective! Definitely win win. 6y
DGRachel Love this series! 6y
Blueroseis I read one free book on Kindle, never again. I prefer a real book to hold and to turn the pages on even if it makes my case that much heavier when I go on holiday. 6y

1. The Prey series by John Sandford. 28 books in and still going strong! They‘re still awesome.
2. Dark Witch by Nora Roberts. It was a trilogy, if that counts as a series.
3. Shelve!! Unless I really didn‘t like it, and then I donate.
4. Sadly, no. I can‘t keep up with my online book groups!

📚John Sandford‘s Prey books (I think there‘s 27 or 28 so far)
📚 Sue Grafton‘s alphabet series. I shouldn‘t have tried to binge them. I got to G or H and couldn‘t take the copy/paste chapter any more and can‘t bring myself to try again
📚If I like it, I keep it
📚 Do Litsy postal book clubs count? If not, then no.
#weekendchat

AlaMich I think that happens with a lot of long series...they get very same-y, and you get the sense the author is just phoning it in. Not that I‘m saying that about Grafton, but it does happen. 7y
DGRachel @AlaMich She had a section of an early chapter where she gave a bit of Kinsey‘s background and I swear it seemed like she just copied the same section and put it in each book. I think if I‘d read them as they were released (or with space) I wouldn‘t have even noticed it, but it grated on my nerves so much that I just haven‘t been able to convince myself to try again. 7y

DGRachel Ooooooohhhh. I would love that car! I had a HEMI Challenger in 2010, but it was just the 5.7L baby HEMI and my Charger has the same baby HEMI. 7y
CindyMyLifeIsLit @DGRachel At least you had those, and they sound cool! My husband says no way! I think he‘s not only thinking of the $80K for the car, but of all the $ to bail me out of the slammer! At certain speeds, they don‘t bother with tickets—you just go straight to jail! 7y
DGRachel @CindyMyLifeIsLit 😂😂 I‘ve been fortunate and not gotten a ticket, but yeah...the beautiful thing about HEMIs, even the little ones, they fly when you punch the accelerator. 7y

I think all books are 🏝📚, but this reminds me of a story. A former co-worker ❤️ James Patterson and his women‘s murder club series, so I loaned her the tagged book. She said it was so disturbing, she couldn‘t finish it, and it ruined her beach trip. “But, you read Patterson!” I exclaimed. Just goes to show books hit people differently. 🤷🏻‍♀️#emojinov

Andrew65 I suppose some of the Lucas stories are quite dark! But I agree we all respond to books differently. 7y
DGRachel @andrew65 I found the first women‘s murder club book to be far more graphic and disturbing than this Prey novel, so I was confused by her visceral response. I had to laugh and tell her that I didn‘t even give her the worst Prey book. Eyes of Prey gave me nightmares. 😂 7y
Andrew65 @DGRachel Yes and I did as an audiobook during a commute, gulp! 7y

My first John Sandford and great fun it was too. He makes no real attempt at police procedural authenticity, and Davenport is about as convincing a cop as James Bond is a spy, but the dialogue crackles and the story races along relentlessly. Recommended for when you're in the mood for some high class hokum.

DrexEdit Not enough people use the word hokum anymore. I enjoyed seeing it here! 😊 7y

Today's #augustphotochallenge was a delicious exercise in bookish memories. I wanted to find a male friendship from a long-running favorite series of mine. Well, cops Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers fit the bill perfectly. They've worked together for decades. Sanford has a series of books highlighting each of them. They act like the guys in my life do with each other. Brotherhood of cops or just plain brothers. #favbookishfriendships

I have mixed feelings about this book. The story line was interesting, but the main character, Lucas Davenport, comes off as an arrogant, chauvinistic jerk. I'm willing to give it another shot. Next is Shadow Prey. Maybe he will grow on me.
