I think the title of this one says it all. Bleak = Desperate. My 3rd favorite Dickens after A CHRISTMAS CAROL and GREAT EXPECTATIONS. 🖤

@Eggs (thanks for the tag! 😘)
1. I read every day. How much I read depends on the time I have and my mood. I usually try for at least 25-50 pages.
2. BUTTER by Asako Yuzuki. I'm STILL not finished and don't know if I even wanna.
3. BLEAK HOUSE (tagged) is the first that popped into my head. Plus, I was so damned proud of myself when I actually finished it! 😂
Play? @kspenmoll @Amiable @BarkingMadRead
4⭐️ Yay, I finished the book! It took me slightly more than 2 weeks, eventhough the Librivox audio is just around 40 hours 🙊 I wouldn‘t survive this without the audio, really. Story-wise, I was more invested at the start than at the end. I don‘t know, I guess I was expecting more fireworks. I still prefer David Copperfield to this.
💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
So many characters!!!! 😅
I must thank this lady Mil Nicholson for her brilliant reading of Bleak House. When I was in the first chapter I knew that I wouldn‘t survive reading this book if without the help of an audiobook. I searched online and my local library to find the voice that I like. I‘m lucky to find one https://youtu.be/uXt5OlPkAos?si=cljPizg3PBQE5BvQ Two days in, and I‘m already at 22%. That‘s pretty amazing, thanks to Mil.
Just started this chunkster. I forgot how verbose Dickens is; he wrote one lengthy paragraph about the fog 😑😑😑 Luckily, I found an audiobook on youtube https://youtu.be/uXt5OlPkAos?si=bF0lunVhndkEEWxB Reading/listening combo works best for me
I only ask to be free, the butterflies are free. 🦋 🩵

Hey Litsy Fam!
Once again, life has gotten in the way, and I‘ve been really out of the loop on Litsy. Lots of big changes at my work and my husband and I are in the process of buying our first home. I‘ve been reading, but not staying up to date on posting reviews.
In any case, I am looking forward to #Scarathlon in October!
Still currently reading Bleak House, as well as new releases Love, Theoretically and Reputation.
I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it (some I‘ve had so long I don‘t even remember why!) Feel free to join in!

I first read this wonderful book on the recommendation of Cummings J, my ethics lecturer, shortly before starting my legal career. Fitting to revisit it as I finally exit. I would like to think the legal profession has improved, but there have been times during my 22 years when I was not so sure.
I agree with too many of Dickens‘ views to continue any longer. And so much happier to be out.
Beautifully read by Margolyes
One of the many examples of the reasons I love classical literature.
By far my favorite Dickens. The characters were fantastic. There were so many characters it was at times difficult to keep them all straight. Loved this one.#Marchofthemammoths2023

Going on year 2 of working my way through this beast of a novel (I will finish eventually!!). It is rumored the titular “Bleak House” Chesney Wold is haunted.

I think I‘ve had this very same conversation...more than once!
Going with a classic for my next book. I read this one ages ago but don‘t remember anything. Excited to get reacquainted with a book that many people say is the best one Dickens ever wrote.
High school is a great place to kill one's love for good literature, and I graduated thinking I will never read anything by Dickens ever again.
Well, it's been 16 years since high school, plenty of time to prove many of my other take aways wrong. Turns out Dickens was no exception. This book is a beast and I had a hard time putting it down! The narrative was so captivating! The wit and satire are both hilarious and illuminating. Highly recommend
I‘ve tried Dickens in the past and been thoroughly bored but Miriam Margolyes really brings this audiobook to life.

1. Usually 3-5 and that can be for an overnight trip or a longer one. I definitely fall in the “never too many books” camp. (Tagged book is the first I‘ve selected for a trip I‘m taking this summer—I also do that, start planning which books to take very early 😬)
2. Yes, the 3-5 number is the number of physical books. I always have more on my iPad so that whatever my mood, there is something to read

1. Yes. I love reading classics. Some favorites include The Monk, Melmoth the Wanderer, The Mysteries of Uldolpho, North and South, Lady Audley‘s Secret, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Wieland, and, of course, Pride & Prejudice.
2. The tagged book because while I sort of think I‘ve read it, I don‘t remember anything about it at all.

Last book of the month for December! 😍
Thanks to my wonderful partner for making the year eventful! 🥰
A gift from my wife for my Birthday! And what a great gift indeed! ❤️
#FallTreasures #Day3 #Over500Pages
Two in-progress books that‘s are over 500 pages. I started Doctor Zhivago during lockdown in 2020; it was supposed to be a buddy read with my bf and roommate but they both gave up, and I started to wane about 30% into the book; I am still planning on finishing it eventually. I started Bleak House earlier this year; after an initial burst of reading, I have taken breaks and come back for a little bit at a time.
I have a hard time rating this book because it feels like two books. The third-person narrative section of the novel is slow, boring, too long. But Esther's first-person narrative is full of bonkers soap-opera melodrama, and I was into it. Oh and also, the way that one person died was a real wtf moment, so that was a bonus. What a crazy, weird book.
My Nonesuch (reprint) editions collection is growing! ❤️❤️ #Dickenssuperfan
New episode is up reviewing Bleak House. This one intimidated us with its length, surprised us with its humor, and was an overall good time. Find the episode on Apple podcasts, SoundCloud, and Google play. #1001books #1001bookspodcast
“Don‘t you read, or get to?”
“We have never been readers in our family. It don‘t pay. Stuff. Idleness. Folly. No, no!”
Safe to say, the Smallweeds are not a good hang.
Been on a hiatus from reading Bleak House, so I thought it would be a good option to bring with me to read during my down time while getting my hair done today.
Wow! Why did I ever resist reading Charles Dickens, in particular, this extraordinary novel? I consumed this book! My dad would be so pleased. I adore Esther. She is the star of this book, but there are so many enjoyable characters. The satire is not lost on me, but I liked Esther‘s narrative best. So much happens, you just need to read it for yourself to find out. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I‘m joining @monalyisha in offering up some books to trade. The next couple stacks are from a huge donation for my LFL from a friend who is an English Lit professor.
Post your own stacks using #booktrade and let me know if you‘re interested in any of these. (US trade only for me due to shipping costs I‘m afraid.)
How about that view? Mt. Susitna (also known as Sleeping Lady) in the distance.
Took an early day off work to enjoy the sun this afternoon. There‘s a bit of wind making it chilly but the sun is so nice to feel! Feels like the first day of summer. I am reading in a park while boyfriend goes disc golfing.

By chapter 40 we are aware of the threat Tulkinghorn poses to Lady Dedlock. Is he motivated by loyalty or something else? What did you think of Tulkinghorn and his demise?
Charity and philanthropy feature in the novel both as something positive and not so. Dickens seems particularly critical of certain forms of charity. Why? #whattheDickens
I finished 6 books in April. My favorites were Bleak House & Star Wars Heir to The Jedi 💜
#whattheDickens There were many characters both main and side in this novel. Did you have favorites? Who did you like/admire? Was Esther the perfect “Victorian” woman? Who did you dislike? Why?
First 5 star 🌟 read of the year. I loved this book. Dickens wrote it as an indictment of the English legal system and I loved the sarcasm and ridiculousness of it. My favorite characters were probably Mr & Mrs Bagnet. They were extremely entertaining. I'm really looking forward to the discussion 😺

Catching up with the Chunkster Challengers ... way to go, @Cuilin! Looking forward to starting “A Tale of Two Cities“ next!
#chunksterchallenge2021
This book has everything. The writing, the characters, the drama, the satire, the mystery, oh and words, lots and lots of words, but when it‘s Dickens doling them out, I say bring ‘em! Gimme more! 😊 I only wish Esther had more agency and was a little less ‘good‘ but her central role in the novel told from a first person narrative definitely wins some points. At any rate, in short, I loved it! #WhatTheDickens @Cuilin
Another Chunkster Challenger crossed the finish line! Way to go, Tammy!

So many characters. Some are unforgettable. I enjoyed the mystery surrounding Esther's mother that culminated in a night long rush to save her from herself. Some characters were downright unlikeable - Smallweed and Richard - I thought him to be very selfish. I'm glad I read it. I can finally say I truly enjoyed a Dickens. Hopefully, I can say it with the third read of A Tale of Two Cities. #whatthedickens @Cuilin #chunksterchallenge2021 @Amiable
Spent the morning and early afternoon finishing Bleak House and can't think of s better way to have passed the time. Loved it. #whatthedickens
We‘re on the home stretch! #whattheDickens Some have finished, some are still chugging along. I‘m preparing discussion questions for the end of April. It‘s also time to think about how we want to tackle A Tale of Two Cities. Would weekly goals/discussions be helpful? etc. Would love to hear your thoughts. Again I‘m tagging all who plan to read any C. D. with us. All are welcome to join at any time.
