Sweet Tooth | Jeff Lemiere
14 posts | 15 read | 9 to read
Jeff Lemire ("Descender," GREEN ARROW) continues his vivid exploration of kindness and cruelty in a post-apocalyptic world. The human race has reached its darkest hour. In the seven years since the Affliction first appeared, billions have died. All the children born since the plague are a strange new race of animal-human hybrids. One of the few remaining humans, a drifter named Jepperd, has formed a bond with one such child, a sweet deer-like boy called Gus. But even among the hybrid children, Gus is an anomaly, seemingly born "before" the sickness began. Believing that Gus s history might be the key to the plague s origins, Jepperd and the boy will journey north together to Alaska in the hope that if they can uncover the story of his birth, it will lead them to a cure for the sickness. But the troubling question remains: If Gus isn t a product of the Affliction, was he its cause? Collects SWEET TOOTH #13-25, a pinup gallery from some of the comics industry s top talents, and an introduction by colorist Jose Villarrubia."

I didn‘t really like this as much as the first volume in this series, but it had a lot to offer in terms of suspense and a cliffhanger ending. My library has book three but not four, so a lot is riding on volume three in terms of whether I keep going with this series.

Trouble follows our hero whoever he goes—yet he manages to prevail. Mostly. Highly emotional, wracked with tension, and wickedly fast-paced, this saga continues to engage. The art emphasizes how the bleak world stands in contrast to the warmth and steadfastness of Gus‘ character. Also, hell of a cliffhanger! An excellent book.

#Movie2BookRecs #cateblanchette 6. One of my favorite graphic novels! Cate Blanchette is the narrator and I can‘t wait to watch this. And I loved The Underwater Welder by Lemire. He‘s great!

Klou I did not know this was a graphic novel! I'm looking forward to watching this one. Great choice! 3y

After quickly binging the Netflix adaptation, I was thrilled to see the 1st volume available through #KindleUnlimited- admittedly, I‘m not the biggest graphic novel fan… But, I was dying to know what happened next (spoiler- this volume has no spoilers)! The artwork felt rougher to me than I expected- I loved the whimsy and magic of the show. Plus the character development isn‘t as strong and is repetitive- guess I‘ll just wait for season 2!

LibrarianRyan I havent started the show yet. I loved the books but they were a bit much. My friend called warning me NOT to watch the show. She saw the promo with the cute puppy and thought it would be a nice sweet show. She tells this all to Josh, who tells me M said don't watch this show- Ummmm sweets, I have the books sitting on the shelf and the last book in my lap as we speak. I know it's not a nice fluffly show. I like that it is a horror comic. 3y
LibrarianRyan My friend is appalled at me.

Book two is rougher and slow. Book 3 is worse, especially at the beginning, but is worth it in the end, but the gore is amped up so be warned if you are looking into the next books. Plus there is a brand new book on the horizon that should be interesting as the series wrapped up quite nicely with book 3.
3y
TorieStorieS @LibrarianRyan Hahhaha!! Thanks for the inside info! Maybe I will keep an eye out for the rest at the used bookstore- though it may be a long wait! For what it‘s worth, I really enjoyed the show and if you watch it, can‘t wait to hear your thoughts!!❤️ 3y

This book was a great continuation of the story. We are introduced to new characters as Gus travels across the lands, and tries to stay away from the humans. Too bad he is captured and has to escape. That is where most of this book is spent, escape. This volume will keep the reader turning pages and needing book 3 immediately after.

@Mavey Thanks for the tag. Before joining Litsy I never would have thought about picking up a comic or graphic novel. But a couple of years ago GrilledCheeseSamurai and TricksyTails (I think that‘s their name) did this read a different comic a month with them and this one of their first picks. It‘s so dark and wonderful. Now it‘s gonna be a Netflix show and I can‘t even be bothered to watch it cause I love the comics so much. Also shout out to👇🏼

Reggie a girl named Claire who was from Canada who I don‘t think posts anymore but she used to post about all kinds of comics and she got me into some others. Anyways, thanks for the tag and tagging anyone who would like to post about their favorite comic or graphic novel. 4y
CBee Same! I read Saga because of Litsy. Also a few others 👏🏻👏🏻 4y
DGRachel I miss TricksyTails so much. 😭😭 And yes those two were the ones who did the comics/graphic novels readalongs which were awesome. It‘s Tricksy‘s fault I got sucked into Saga. 4y

CampbellTaraL I love this story of you discovering comic/graphic novel works! Agree with everyone above on Saga, and add Persepolis as another fantastic example of visual lit work. Stacking your read right now, it sounds so good. 4y
mavey @Reggie Thanks so much for playing!💕Litsy truly has expanded our horizons! 4y
Megabooks I hadn‘t picked up one until litsy either, but I chose Giant Days. Since then, I‘ve read a few dozen graphic novels, and I adore graphic memoirs!! 4y
Centique @Megabooks I love Giant Days too! And I discovered domestic manga thanks to someone on here - which lead to watching lots of Studio Ghibli too 😍 4y
DivineDiana Litsy also introduced me to graphic novels. My first was Persopolis which was powerful. Want to read the rest of the series. 4y
Centique Hey Reggie hope everything is ok with you. This is just to say I notice whenever you‘re away and miss ya. 💕💕 4y
Reggie @Centique ❤️We‘ve had one employee walk out and threaten violence against another employee on his way out. Another, his father was in a horrific accident involving fire that he has been gone. I‘ve just been working crazy overtime right now. And before those 2 we were already short people. We‘ve hired some people so I‘ll be back soon. Thanks for checking up on me, Paula. 😘 4y
Centique @Reggie maaaaate! That‘s a lot of intense things! I can only imagine how crazy busy things were with all of that. 🤯 I hope the new hires work out and it calms down a bit. I‘ve been stressed too but nothing like as much as that - just 3 birthday celebrations and overseas visitors and an office move within 10 days. Im looking forward to some alone time with 📚📚📚📚📚 4y
CarolynM Like @Centique I missed you and came by to check in. Sounds like a tough time for all concerned. Hope things settle down soon🤗 4y
Suet624 I‘m so sorry to hear how wild it is right now for you. We‘ll be waiting for you whenever you have time again. Take care of yourself. 4y

The trailer reminded me that I had yet to finish this series (which I started long before there was even talk of a show)...ooops. What can I say, I'm easily distracted. I can't even tell you how many graphic novel series I have started but have yet to finish. Of course I quickly requested the remaining volumes so I could remedy this situation. 😬🤓

Going to read this for the #CBBR before jumping back in to the #WheelofTime series! The thunder and torrential downpour have started, so it‘s a perfect day to do nothing but read. #WeveGotIssues
@TricksyTails @GrilledCheeseSamurai

Zelma Same weather here and that‘s a good choice to snuggle up with. Not the most original story ever but still interesting and kept me entertained. 7y
TricksyTails Thunder and rain seems like the perfect backdrop to read Sweet Tooth! 😍 Love thunder. 7y

Maaaan!!!!! @TricksyTails @GrilledCheeseSamurai This was totally a case of you guys throwing a chip out there to make me buy the bag. I had to get all three books and I finished the last today. It was amazing, but lots of violence, lotsa Walking Dead, when one of the main character gets killed in an episode, Cormac McCarthy‘s The Road, No Annie, the sun will not come out tomorrow, House of Sand and Fog, Million Dollar Baby Clint euthanizing 👇🏼

Reggie Hillary‘s character at the end, kind of feelings going on in here. There was that ache right above my stomach and right under my heart the whole time reading this. So thanks, because I loved this story, the whole way through. #wevegotissues #CBBR (edited) 7y
