In this installment you have the enemies from book one in an uneasy alliance working together and growing closer. More military exercises and war preparation than the mental gymnastics of political intrigue. We also get the slow burn that earned the book 'Romance' on back although I have yet to figure out why Mature Audience is noted. The in depth sex scenes are tastefully done and speak more to yearning than gratuitous. Chapter 19.5 in back

Y'all are probably tired of hearing about the Captive Prince trilogy 😂 but that was DEFINITELY my fave read in January so...😁

peanutnine I love this idea for figuring out your favorite book of the year! So smart! 3y
chasjjlee @peanutnine thanks 🙂. I'll post a blank one if you wanna screenshot it so you can fill it out too. 3y

WOW WOW WOW...
For all the pain we endured through book one, IT WAS WORTH IT!

I knew reading the 2nd book would give me clarity.
This is a beautiful, complicated, painful love story that is just everything I've been missing in my life! I've never read a book quite like this.

I am about 130 pages into book 3 and I am ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT.
I love this series!

It‘s very rare that I DNF a book, but I just REALLY didn‘t like the writing, and the plot didn‘t interest me enough to continue despite it.

I enjoyed this read. It was fun to see the characters grow and observe one another's growth. I had a few spots where I didn't quite believe either the story itself or the characters' actions. #lgbt #lgbtq #queerbook #lgbtbook #lgbtliterature #battletactics #secreridentity #lgbtcharacter

oh, THIS BOOK.
the enemies-to-friends-to-lovers progression of this book is fkn perfection. we get to witness these two completely different, headstrong men falling in love with each other. I love that I was kept on my toes reading this. There were times when I thought I knew exactly what was going to happen, and then the plot TWISTS right out from underneath me!
5/5. CS Pacat is a GENIUS, and I owe her so much for writing these characters. ♥️

laurent and damen talking after they had just taken ravenel. this is such a big moment for them with all of their unspoken history lurking in the background and the regent looming in the future. together, against all odds, they took an impregnable fort!
also, i love how boyish and playful laurent is here! standing in front of damen all smug and cute like, “how do you like my fort??” ugh 😍

mom2bugnbee TATWD is among the best books I've read this year. I adore John Green. Little Fires Everywhere was also very enjoyable. 7y

If only I could have binned it! The first book was bad but I thought I would give the second a chance... Mistake! Characters are simplistic, poorly written plot, more sex than substance. This is basically erotica with a poorly written story in the background.....

I have enjoyed both books I've read of this trilogy, though the pacing of this one seemed off to me: I felt like the build up went on and on, yet the payoff (so to speak) caught me by surprise. And ...

Susannah I don't understand what drives Damen. Honor? He's been enslaved through the actions of a treacherous brother. Isn't returning to his country at the earliest opportunity mean his honor is ensured? I feel a little dense about this, but I also feel like this series means to be a bit more sophisticated than your everyday MM story.... 🤷‍♀️ (edited) 7y

Devoured this whole series last summer in about a day and a half. I was reading them at my desk at work, on my walk to the bus stop, while I cooked--I don't think I did anything else during that time.

LaraReads Love, love, love Laurent & Damen! 😍 This trilogy totally took over my world last fall! Sigh. 8y

Doing a group reread of the series! The first book is a little slow but once you hit Prince's Gambit the story flies.

This was still crazy delicious the second time around. If anything, I was even more wrapped up in it. The dynamic between Laurent and Damen is fascinating and interesting and makes for some entertaining reading.

I love that, as a person, I think very much like Damen, especially with how he sees Laurent. This makes it so easy to get hopelessly lost in the reader's dream in these books.

I don't think I'll ever have my fill of Laurent. *happy sigh*

My love for Laurent knows no bounds.

I love that these books are third person through Damen because I feel like I'm more like him and so I can thoroughly enjoy all that is sassy, too-smart-for-anyone's-good Laurent.

I'll be honest, I wasn't a fan of the first book. It revolted me with a lot of the rape romanticism even though I tried to understand the author was writing a world where these were the customs. The plot interested me enough to continue and I'm glad I did. The second book was a lot less rape-fueled and included more of the slow build, political historical romance I was looking for. The series has issues for me, but overall I enjoyed reading it.

Ahhhh this was even better than the first one. So many twists and turns. Damen and Laurent are killing me! 😫😍 Of course the final book costs more than the other two. Of course I have to buy it immediately and download it on my Kindle. Great world-building and wonderfully complex, heart-breaking characters.

This was so much better than Captive Prince, and I didn't think that was possible. The world building was expanded so much more. I loved everything about it. Damen and Laurent=swoon.

Holy crap, this was freaking incredible. My emotions were constantly being destroyed but that's always the best way for books. I could barely put this book down. And the ending was pretty much epic. When you read it, have Kings Rising on hand. There is no stopping between book 2 and 3.

I loved this one a lot more. I still had problems with it as there was a lot of repetition and the author had a tendency to reveal stuff to the characters before us which got frustrating. However the plot was more exciting and the romance was beyond adorable. I love these characters even more now!

4 stars - Three Thoughts 1) even more compelling & unputdownable than the first...and that ending!!! 2) I still have issues with the writing & choppy dialogue but oh how I am enthralled 3) I have no idea where this is going but so glad I am able to dive right in to final book!

What is it about this book that is so compelling?? There is so much in its writing that normally bothers me - like the choppy dialogue and telling over showing. But it's a bit like an adult Megan Whalen Turner book

Much more of an and-then-what feeling as I was reading, which read to less sleep and motion sickness, but still so great. Now I have to wait to get to the top of the holds list...
