Taking Off Emily Dickinson's Clothes
Taking Off Emily Dickinson's Clothes | Billy Collins
15 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
A funny and moving collection from one of America's bestselling poets Billy Collins is one of America's best loved poets and comes armed with plaudits from John Updike, E Annie Proulx. He is one of Carol Ann Duffy's favourite living poets and this Selected is the first time he will be published in the UK. From a poem about the relentless barking of next door's dog - Another Reason Why I don't Keep a Gun in the House - to an elegy to The Best Cigarette. Just read one poem and you'll be a committed fan. Billy Collins gets right to the heart of things. He is one of the funniest poets writing today. Billy Collins is a fantastic performer (his readings at the Poetry festival in Aldeburgh were sold out, as were all his US collections) and will hopefully be brought over by the South Bank, London in the Autumn. His readings are unmissable.

#poetrymatters prompt 28: #music @LazyDays

I have two books of poetry. One is Shakespeare, which makes my brain hurt trying to decode it. The other is the tagged book, #blameitonlitsy. This is the first poem in the collection. I laughed out loud at the first verse and decided there might be something in this poetry lark.
Any suggestions for my second poetry purchase please?

TrishB Love this 💕 I‘m never sure what to recommend in poetry as it‘s so personal! 6y
merelybookish Collins is a good place to start! Maybe Mary Oliver? There are a few sites that you can sign up for a daily poem. They might help you get a sense of what you like. I get one from Paris Review and another from Poem-a-Day. 6y
LazyDays I agree poetry is personal. Maybe start off with small short poems and books and work your way around those. I bought the tagged book and it s fun to flip to a random page and read 6y

LazyDays Ha I hit send 😃 or mayne do a mix media of poetry and art. You can try Robert Frost to ease into some heavier type. I am rambling 😊 but I hope that helps a little bit, till you find what speaks to you 6y
LazyDays . great to randomly flip through. 6y
LazyDays Some fun mixed media "love" poems/photography 6y
LazyDays This is a fun one that gives sime back story about Frost. I always like a good back story. I hope this helps! Good kuck and happy hunting!💗 6y
merelybookish Garrison Keillor's Good Poems anthologies are a great intro! I highly recommend! 6y
MayJasper Thank you all for your responses @TrishB @merelybookish and @LazyDays I will be in the lookout for a good anthology 6y

And when he comes into full view
over open fields
he looks like a young man who has fallen in love
with the dark earth
a pale bachelor, well-groomed and
full of melancholy
his round mouth open
as if he had just broken into song.

Night Golf by Billy Collins

How soothing to stroll the shadowy fairways,
to skirt the moon-blanched bunkers
and hear the night owl in the woods.
