Queens of Fennbirn
Queens of Fennbirn: Two Three Dark Crowns Novellas | Kendare Blake
37 posts | 37 read | 22 to read
Queens of Fennbirn contains two gripping stories from the New York Times bestselling Three Dark Crowns universe, written by Kendare Blake. The Young Queens is the story of the three queens when they were born, before they were separated - it gives a short glimpse of the time when they all lived together, loved each other and protected one another. It's also the story of the day they were torn apart and the immediate years that followed before the opening of Three Dark Crowns. The Oracle Queen - historically, baby queens born with the sight gift were drowned. This had been the practice for hundreds of years, so long that few were even born any more, as if the Goddess knew it would be a waste. It is a harsh sentence, but necessary, for it is well-known that in a queen the sight gift will run strong. Strong enough to drive her mad. This is the tale of the last sight-gift queen to be allowed to live. She was overcome by paranoia and false visions, driven past the brink by the phantom thoughts of others in her head, so she set upon the capital with bloody ruin, murdering whole houses, whole family lines, without trial. Or at least, that is how the tale is told. This is her story.

Uncover the sisters' origins, dive deep into the catastrophic reign of the Oracle Queen, and reveal layers of Fennbirn's past, hidden until now. Get a glimpse of triplet queens Mirabella, Arsinoe, and Katharine during a short period of time when they protected and loved one another.

This was a nice short read. It really gives a much broader background about the Queens before the Ascension, and how events in the books came to be. It also gives you a surprising look at the Oracle Queen. I would recommend reading for fans of the series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It‘s been awhile since I finished this series, and I‘m happy I got this book - it gives insight into how the three queens first separated as girls, and it comes with a story about the last oracle queen of the island. It was nice to dip my toes back into this universe after so long.

A fun little read, but I enjoyed the second story more than the first, which felt a little disjointed and kind of rehashed things we'd already read or figured out from the books. Think I would have enjoyed it more if the whole story had been set at the Black Cottage before the three were separated. I quite liked the story of Queen Elsabet and would love to see some other stories of other queens over the centuries. 3.5/5 #ya #fantasy

I don‘t usually care to read novellas but I loved this series so much and was intrigued in these 2 stories. I loved learning about the queens‘ childhoods and I knew there had to be more to the story of the Oracle Queen!

These two short novellas don‘t add a whole lot to the Three Dark Crowns series so I don‘t recommend buying them if you purchase books. The backstory for Arsinoe, Mirabella, and Katherine was especially bare of meaningful insight, or so it seemed. The other oracle queen novella was more interesting and enjoyable. I would have liked more history of Fennbirn and world building. These stories are okay as long as you‘re not looking for depth.

KellyHerself I just started the first book in this series tonight! 6y

What an amazing collection. My favorite part of The Young Queens was seeing how Mirabelle grew up (which was completely different from what I expected). And wow, The Oracle Queen. Queen Elsabet is now one of my favorites. I‘m curious to see if anything will happen in the series for the oracle gifts.

Schnoebs @julesG if you want to finish the sequel first don‘t feel a need to rush (I still probably won‘t get to it for another day or too and even then idk how quickly I‘ll finish it). I think it might even be a bit more enjoyable if you finish the sequel because of how they talk about their childhood in it 😁 6y
julesG Okay, I'll try getting to the sequel first. If my kids let me that is. 6y
DuckOfDoom Are you doing a buddy read for this book? 😀 6y

“I do not want normal. I want greatness.”

“Three Dark Sisters” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“One Cursed Oracle” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was the first book in the series that I read, and it was absolutely fantastic. It‘s a very dark fantasy, and I cannot wait to catch up with the rest of the series. The writing was beautiful, the story just had me addicted. It‘s one of the strongest prequels that I‘ve ever read.

Finished this 2for1 novella tonight.I liked the one about the birth of the 3 current queens. The trauma they went through was horrifying! It‘s not an easy life being born queen in Fennbirn. And poor Katherine! Her own mother basically makes her the sacrificial lamb for her own revenge.Harsh much? The 2nd story wasn‘t as good, it was depressing reading about a young woman surrounded by enemies, even so called friends turn out duplicitous.👸🏻👸🏻👸🏻

Giving another “novella” a spin before diving back in to my chunksters! 2 short stories in 1 book, the first is The Young Queens, about the days when Mirabella, Arsinoe & Katherine were 3 loving sisters, living together happily in the cabin they were born in.The other is The Oracle Queen, about the bloody reign of the last oracle queen. Paranoid, ruthless & totally nuts, caused the death of many innocent people. Or did she? Two sides to every story.

Traci1 Ooh that looks really good. 7y

Partial April wrap-up. Missing: Glow 15 (non-fiction, nutrition/weight loss, not really worth reading); also missing: A Discovery of Witches and The Final Empire, both of which I read over a longer stretch of time and only just *finished* then in April.

Best of the bunch: Queen of Fennbirn! Though I have three vying for second place (Skulduggery Pleasant, By a Charm and a Curse, One of Us is Lying), so this was a very good month!

#BookMail Pt1 I was soooo weak a few days ago! I got an email about a sale at booktopia.com.au & before I realised I‘d hit the link. An hour later I had an order of 10 books! And I‘ve been so good too, thank god they had Afterpay so I could stretch the damage out. Anyway, this is Bk1, it‘s two novellas in one about the Queens from Three Dark Crowns. #theforcewastoostrong #atleastitsbooksnotdrugs

LapReader I love that they have Afterpay too. 7y

In these two novellas, Kendare Blake does so much: she reveals terrible truths without spelling them out, explains things without dumbing them down, and she provides backstories so perfect, so accurate, so believable, that these fabulous characters emerge even more realistic, relatable and perfectly framed in their upbringing and circumstances. The story emerges even richer, deeper and darker. I love this terrible world she has created!

Two short stories, “The Oracle Queen” & “The Young Queens”, make up this collection and expand the universe just a bit, and so if you‘re not familiar with this world it‘s a good idea to start with the actual series first. I really got sucked in to “The Oracle Queen”, which gives more of Fennbirn‘s history and the diabolical nature of the ruling class. It‘s a fun excuse to spend a bit more time in this world and these characters.

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Good to know. I picked this up the other day and thought I might start here instead of with Three Dark Crowns. 6y
Hannah_Haymond @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Happy reading! It‘s a fun series, and book 3 (of the main series) comes out this fall so this is a good time to get into it, either way. (edited) 6y

Getting started on the Queens of Fennbirn and I'm really looking forward to reading about the Oracle Queen! Elsabet's story sounds fascinating. I am still #teamarsinoe, but Mirabella grew on me in #onedarkthrone and, even though Katherine isn't my favorite, the Arrons are the most interesting (although extremely devious) family to me. So, the Arrons, and Jules and Billy are my favorite #sidecharacters #acourtofprintandlove
