Nocturnos / Nocturnes
Nocturnos / Nocturnes: Five Stories of Music and Nightfall | Kazuo Ishiguro
This is a collection of five stories focused on music and musicians; it reads like a concert, introducing each story as a movement, mixing it with the others and bringing them to a resounding close. the five stories exhibit ideas common to Ishiguro's work, among them uncertain endings with no catharsis and music closely linked to the A01's life.

The through line here was music but ultimately these were short stories examining relationships, miscommunication, and emotion. Quite lovely. #AuthorAMonth

This book just flew by. It was so accessible and easy to read, even as – like I already mentioned in my last post – I don't much like reading about music in books. (Hmmm... How come I do love Murakami then? 🤔) Nevertheless, I wanted to try this one. After all, it's not only about music, but also about nightfall and strange chance encounters, and these I like very much in books. 😊Five stories of a transient lightness and bittersweet sadness.

Yuki_Onna (Continued) This was my #Doublespin book. @TheAromaofBooks

I'm saying 👋 for a short time, as I won't have access to Litsy for the next 20 days or so...
However, I'd like to participate in September's #Bookspin and #Doublespin! I'm going to make my list in time (even if I cannot upload it in time), so please tag me, @TheAromaofBooks!

So far, Nocturnes is fab, even though I don't usually like reading about music in books. And the wrap matches the book's topics so perfectly! 🎶 🎷 #Bookspin #DoubleSpin

I wanted to like these. I liked the 2 novels of his that I read. But something didn‘t work. It was like he was writing about something he didn‘t know- like Eloise who can‘t play the cello but is convinced she‘s a virtuoso. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Music plays in the background of these five lightly-connected stories, which flow with the looseness of improvisational jazz, yet turn on surprising chord changes and end with exquisite precision. Amusing, insightful writing that strikes just the right note while looking at various misdeeds and the conflicting quests for artistic integrity and success.

“So tonight,” he went on, “we‘re performing for Lindy. Lindy‘s the audience. So I‘m going to tell you something about Lindy. You want to hear about Lindy?”

I picked up Ishiguro‘s short story collection because of a glowing joint review of one of the stories (which has been published as a stand-alone). Doris and @shawnmooney reviewed it on Shawn‘s booktube channel: https://youtu.be/3dF6M8a8UTs
Each of the five stories that comprise the collection is quite long, and I‘ve enjoyed the three I‘ve read so far, including Come Rain or Come Shine.

He kept looking at me & I kept looking at him & the situation might have gone on indefinitely if he hadn‘t said into the phone: “It‘s all right. It‘s all right. It‘s a man.” There was a pause, then he said: “I thought for a moment it was something else. But it‘s a man. With a bandaged head, wearing a nightgown. That‘s all it is, I see now. It‘s just that he‘s got a chicken or something on the end of his arm.”

My small #TBR for #December
As much as I love my job at Barnes & Noble, it‘s physically and mentally exhausting at Xmas, so I know I won‘t be reading as much as normal..... (I‘ll probably be binging on old Great British Bake Offs on Netflix to send me to sleep!😂)
The Moriarty is for brain candy, the Shirley Jackson ties up #booked2018 and the other 3 are my final #pop18 choices for true crime, space and time of day... 👍😊

TrishB I always feel sorry for anyone in retail and the Christmas rush.....and people are so rude! I hope you manage to get some reading in. 6y

Ishiguro is one of my favorites. In these five short stories of music and nightfall, he constructs narratives that withhold crucial details, conjuring anxiety in the reader because the reader always knows a little more than the character on the page. In a way, Ishiguro crafts literary sitcoms.

#audiobook

Some enjoyable short stories narrated by different voices, mainly casual voyeurs looking in on other people's relationships, in particular long standing relationships. I think my favourite had to be the gently farsical tale of a houseguest staying with old friends who attempted to convince one of the owners that a crazy dog had destroyed part of her diary which had some disparaging things about him in!

Interesting connections between each story, but I found some of the main characters just plain annoying tbh. But I think he did a good job of achieving an overall melancholy mood and the frustration of the music business and feeling like a failure in one‘s own industry.

Music binds together five short stories in this suite of a book, set in this world of ours that sometimes feels so vast and then suddenly so small.
There are 5 parts to music: melody, harmony, key, metre and rhythm. Nocturnes comprises of 5 parts as well and each story builds up in length and comes to peak at the fourth story. Just like a song, the book plays...

Some times funny, some times just alright.
But the storytelling is sublime!

Oh, dear. These are not good stories. Maybe if I was into musical snobbery and musical name dropping and/or mediocre short stories that are 95% character, 5% plot, I would finish this. But, I'm not. So, I won't.

I look forward to reading a novel by Ishiguro, though!

vivastory But, did you like it? 8y
See All 14 Comments
Suet624 Bummer. 8y
saresmoore @Suet624 I'm sure there is a music buff out there who will be pleased as punch to happen upon this book in the Little Free Library in my 'hood! 8y
Suet624 True. He's definitely hit or miss for me. 8y
Billypar Oh geez... Was the nightfall any good at least? 8y
saresmoore @Billypar I only read two of the stories, but I think nightfall is in reference to aging. I can see where he was going with the stories, but I was hoping for something more atmospheric or transportive—especially considering the cover—but instead they were just underwhelming for me. Some have really liked the book, though! 8y
batsy Oh dear. I typically do like stories about character over plot but not if they're mediocre. I think maybe for my first attempt I'll go with one of his novels... 8y
saresmoore @batsy I really do, too! I mean Fair Play is more like 100% character and 0% plot. But this was just kind of obnoxious to read. I think I've just read a lot of really wonderful short stories lately and these pale in comparison. 8y
saresmoore @batsy Also, I was probably too hasty with my reasoning of what exactly I didn't like about it. (It was a long week & I'm a tad short on patience. 😬) Nonetheless, I think starting with one of his well-loved novels would be a good choice. 😊 8y
batsy @saresmoore I do so know what you mean! Sometimes you just don't click with a book and it's too exhausting to explain why. 8y
Daisey I read this, but none of the stories really worked for me either. Someday I hope to try one of the author's novels instead. 8y
Moray_Reads I would definitely try the Remains of the Day, everyone I know lives that one but I always get mixed reactions for the rest 8y

underthebelljar No ice cream in my house either ☹️ My boyfriend and I try not to eat/drink things containing milk. I do miss gelato though... 8y

saresmoore They make ice cream with cashew/coconut/almond milk, but really, who are they kidding thinking that compares to gelato...or a Blizzard? Yeah, I just try not to think about it. I can't eat cheese, either. Ugh. 8y
vivastory @saresmoore The prompts practically write themselves! I wasn't aware Ishiguro had published a short story collection, I'm interested in seeing what you think 8y
vivastory @saresmoore No cheese?! That's inhumane 8y
saresmoore @vivastory Also no lattes or late night cereal. I don't wanna talk about it... 😒 ANYWAY, this will be my first Ishiguro, although Remains of the Day is waiting on the shelf. 8y
vivastory @saresmoore "Never Let Me Go" is one of my favorite books. I need to read more by him 8y
merelybookish I have not read any Ishiguru either which seems like a big hole. 8y
saresmoore @merelybookish After reading the first story, I think I will say this is probably not his best work to start with. I was underwhelmed. But I've heard amazing things about both Never Let Me Go and 8y
merelybookish @saresmoore Okay. Good to know. There seems to be deep love for both those titles. But Ive heard mixed reviews of Buried Giant. 8y
Hobbinol Sounds wonderful with or without ice cream! 8y
saresmoore @merelybookish I tried Buried Giant as a library loan speed date (just read the first ten pages or so) and it didn't grab me, so I returned it to try another time. 8y
batsy I don't eat much ice cream these days either, not so much for health or allergy reasons but just because I'm into it anymore. Weird. But now I'm upset coz I can't do the photo challenge 😁 Look forward to your thoughts on the book, I've not read any Ishiguro and that seems quite wrong. 8y
Moray_Reads I always find Ishiguro oddly hit or miss. Loved the Remains of the Day, Never Let Me Go and Artist of the Floating World, hated The Buried Giant and the Unconsoled. When We Were Orphans is okay but the far-fetched plot grated after a while 8y

I made a point of reading only one short story a day, so I wouldn't lose detail in a crush of reading; and yet I still feel like I've missed connections between the characters and/or arcs. Yes, all deal with music and nightfall as the subtitle suggests; and the theme (depressing I might add) of "life [being] much bigger than loving a person" is obvious; but perhaps a more careful re-reading on my part will bring *all* more into focus.

8leagueboot No matter how many times I read Ishiguro's "Remains of the Day", it just destroys me. I'll have to pick this up ASAP. 8y

Half-Way Status Update: I have to admit that I'm disappointed so far. I expected elegant, slow burn writing that would deliver a powerful punch at the end of each story. Instead, each of the stories so far has delivered descriptive settings & an element of music; but each marred by an ugly take on love relationships, and no sense of denouement(s). Unless the last 2 stories deliver, this title is destined for the ultimate "meh" rating (forgettable)

My #FunFridayPhoto this week with flocks of birds (and a hint of my fading henna feather). I picked this up a few years ago because Never Let Me Go is one of my all time favorites. Of course, like with a lot of books I buy, it found a home on my bookshelf but still hasn't been read! Someday...
