How to be Famous
How to be Famous | Caitlin Moran
Im Johanna Morrigan, and I live in London in 1995, at the epicentre of Britpop. I might only be nineteen, but Im wise enough to know everyone that around me is handling fame very, very badly. My unrequited love, John Kite, has scored an unexpected Number One album, then exploded into a Booze And Drugs HellTM as rockstars do. And my new best friend the maverick feminist Suzanne Banks, of The Branks has amazing hair, but writers block and a rampant pill problem. So Ive decided I should become a Fame Doctor. Im going to use my new monthly column for The Face to write about every ridiculous, surreal, amazing aspect of a million people knowing your name. But when my two-night-stand with edgy comedian Jerry Sharp goes wrong, people start to know my name for all the wrong reasons. Hes a vampire. He destroys bright young girls. Also, hes a total dick Suzanne warned me. But by that point, Id already had sex with him. Bad sex. Now Im one of the girls hes trying to destroy. He needs to be stopped. But how can one woman stop a bad, famous, powerful man?

#JuneRoundUp

Ugh...I had such a good month in May and I feel like I bombed this month. Technically I only committed to 6 books for #ReadYourSign and I got those in, I had 13 books lined up and I‘m really bummed I didn‘t finish this challenge.

Here‘s hoping to a better and less “slumpy” July 🤞🏼

Tagged book was my favorite of the month and the only one I gave 5 stars 🌻

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm June was bad for me too. Here‘s hoping July‘s better for both of us! 🤜🏻🤛🏻 4y
Powered_By_Plants How to be famous sounds good 👍 , sorry you found yourself in a slump lovely , although 9 isn‘t bad! Iv found since I‘ve discovered audible it‘s doubled my read pile 😊 (edited) 4y

#ReadYourSign ♋️ Cancer Prompt 1 ♋️

I loved this far and away more than the first one. I really feel I‘ve gotten to grow with Johanna. I really love how this delved into experiences that a lot of women have faced. How it spoke to the me too movement. This book made me nod my head in agreement so many times. This is a book I‘d be proud to have a daughter read. Johanna is an icon and I‘m in love with her ❤️

Took me straight back to 1990s Britain. The writing is smart, bravely feminist, and hilarious. I did not realise this was a sequel to How to Build a Girl and that will be added to my TBR pile.

A hilarious, heartfelt, raw, and thoughtful exploration of sex and friendship and love. An excellent sequel! If How to Build a Girl was a love letter to rock music from the misfits who love it (which it was ONLY in part), then this is a love letter to Britpop from the girls who love it.

Genius. I want to read everything this woman has written.

RinaBrahmbhattBarot Give me an overview please...I tried to read one of her other book - didn't get into it (think it was something about on the road) 5y
Shemac77 The first in the series is How to Build a Girl. Both center around Dolly (pseudonym) who is a brilliant girl from a poor town in Wales. She manages to pull herself out of said town by writing geniusly for a rock magazine. That‘s the very basic premise. However. The book is more than that. It‘s an anthem for young girls finding their way. It‘s shocking and balls out funny and heartbreaking. 5y
RinaBrahmbhattBarot @Shemac77 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 5y
Buechersuechtling I enjoy seeing people enthusiastic about Caitlin Moran‘s books. Some years ago, I read the first one because it was recommended on TV by someone who often hits my taste. But this one was so much not my cup of tea that my brain refuses to forget the book. 😂 Enjoy your reads and have a relaxing Sunday. @MyBookSwapClub @Shemac77 ‼️ 5y

I bloody loved this book! An excellent story which is very relevant in 2019. I‘m a bit sad that I‘d forgotten a lot of the previous story though. I‘m very excited to hear that How to Build a Girl is being made into a film - hope this one is too!

Photo is from when I saw Caitlin speak last Sunday on the first night of her tour. She was signing at the end and must have hugged hundreds of people after the show. Awesome!

I‘m really enjoying this so far. I‘m pretty sure I got quite far into ‘How to Build a Girl‘ and got distracted for some reason, so I might have to re-read that once I‘ve finished this one.

EDIT: Flicking through it, I‘ve definitely read HTBAG...it‘s been too long! I definitely need to re-read!

#UnpopularOpinion

Just did not like this one. I wouldn‘t have made it past 100 pages (who are we kidding? 50 pages) if it were not my book club pick. The scene where Dolly/Joanna/Jo/Dutchess stands up for herself partially redeemed the story for me, but overall I found it flat.

Mallory talked about this book and author on an episode of @ReadingGlasses and since I think she is amazing and we have similar tastes, I got it from the library. It‘s the story of a teenage music critic who finds her true voice through unrequited love and one terrible sexual experience. It was wonderful and empowering and just laugh out loud funny. The character development and growth was just so lovely. Highly recommend

Finished this one a few days ago. Loved it! A brilliant sequel to How to Build a Girl. I love the characters, they all have such a unique voice and are so real. As with everything Caitlin Moran it was hilarious but also heartbreaking at times. But for most of it I had a massive smile on my face! 😃 I‘m so glad to hear they‘re turning How to Build a Girl into a film! 😃

I‘m breaking from this (redacted) fantastic book to finish knitting a baby sweater and watch Abducted in Plain Sight but I just wanted to say that if you haven‘t read How to Build a Girl or How to be Famous, then you should. Probably right now. Johanna Morrigan wants to be someone else, so she reinvents herself as music journalist Dolly Wilde. It‘s London in 1994 and I can‘t get enough. But this baby sweater calls 😭

While not as fun as How to Build a Girl, this follow up was still a smart, humorous look at growing up in the 90s. In this book, Johanna learns that girls do have a voice and learns to listen to her own. With more maturity, she finds greater strength as she struggles through some interesting challenges. I thoroughly enjoyed tearing through this sequel to the excellent How To Build A Girl in the space of a few days. How To Be Famous is a hilarious and sad love letter to teenage girls, music and fighting back in the face of disaster, all set at the time that Britpop first exploded onto the scene. As someone who had posters of all of the 90s boy/indie bands on my teenage bedroom walls, it was also quite a nostalgic read!

The 90s riot grrl in me loves Caitlin Moran. She‘s crude, funny, and 100% relatable. This book made me laugh, and the ending had me in tears! The whole experience made me ache inside. Honestly, I‘m a little sad it‘s over.
