I'm not going to lie, I have bit of a celebrity crush on Jake Tapper. Weird, I know... I decided to read this book. I just started it, but I wanted to know if any of you have read it and if so, what are you're thoughts?

3.75 stars! The plot was all over the place and was dry. I did learn a few historical facts despite the fictitious characters and storyline. #booknerd #bookaddict #bookworm #bookclub

I like watching Jake Tapper on State of the Union, so when I heard about his historical political thriller I thought I'd check it out. Tapper clearly did his research and his love for the political milieu of the 50s comes through. The Congressman at the heart of the story is far from perfect (his wife is too good for him!) and he is quickly in way over his head. The plot is a bit National Treasure in its trail of clues, but I enjoyed the ride.

I like Tapper. Let‘s see how he does make believe.

A slog. Tapper's prose is somewhat amateurish. Clever trope of presenting how the politics of the 50s and at least one of the real life characters resonate today. The intrigue is completely over the top and borderline silly.

I have read some pretty brutal reviews of this book, but I found it entertaining and even educational. I wound up looking up several things mentioned in the book and Tapper‘s list of sources at the close has given me a book or two to add to my own reading list. If you enjoy historical fiction, maybe check this one out.

Okay. I‘m going to need to research this to see if it‘s real or total BS. Frankly, either way wouldn‘t surprise me.

Not perfect, but fun, and definitely a page-turner. Again, Tapper is pretty transparent with his commentary about the current state of politics through the lens of the ‘50s, but hey. Truth is truth. (And tbh, right now, truth is stranger than fiction.) 🤷🏻‍♀️ #thehellfireclub #jaketapper

I just started this two hours ago, after finishing Sen. McCain‘s #TheRestlessWave; I‘m already almost done. Tapper‘s love of history and politics is evident, & he is not AT ALL subtle in his comparisons between historical figures & current administration, or the creation of characters in the image of current administration cronies 😂. It‘s fast-paced intrigue, if not particularly original; Tapper is a capable novelist. #thehellfireclub #jaketapper

I wanted to like this book. It has history, politics, a mystery. The first half seemed mostly to name-drop historical figures. When the action accelerated, the plot twists hinged too manydeus ex machines for my tastes. It was odd that as meticulous as the author was in ensuring historical events were accurately depicted, he did not make the language 1950‘s accurate (dad jokes, etc) or making the characters seem very accurate for the time period.

I didn‘t love this book... although I read it very quickly it wasn‘t the best book I read for the time and genre. It was hard to keep all of the characters straight and who was who and who was good and who was supposed to be bad ...

Well that was fun!

Good read! A few anachronisms, but otherwise good flavor of the time and place. I predict a big beach read this summer. Tapper is also saying a lot about the current political scene. Also, a warning--do not begin this in the evening, you might not get to bed that night!

Yay!!! I‘m not done with my western romance yet but I‘m ready this one. Did anyone read The Outpost?? It is non fiction but it was fantastic!
