Early in her teens, she was a stage acts in Austria, but becomes tangled up with a mysterious and powerful man who very clearly has a hand in the second World War...Hedy's own Jewish family urges her on, pulled with warnings about getting too close to this potentially dangerous man, but, out of fear, sends her directly into marriage! I'm hooked.
pickHad our book club meeting last night, topped off with a gin tasting, for The Wicked City by Beatriz Williams. A slightly slow start turned into a page turner that had us, as usual with Williams's novels, bouncing between 2 decades...the prohibition era 20's and the 90's, each highlighting a strong-ish female lead character attempting to find her feet.
pickDetails on this bizarre friendship are trickled out from the viewpoints of both Alice and Lucy. Something has transpired between them that keeps the pages turning to discover the truth about how it caused one to flee to Tangier and the other to follow! Well-written characters!
Working my way into this day and, frankly, into this year. Yes, I realize it's April; however, good resets happen when you read books like these...more to come on Essentialism because it's not a book to rush.
pickSmartly funny, irreverent, and, at once pitiful and inspiring. The characters of this book are deeply flawed, but at times, admirable. This is a quick read, but totally worth it.
