Thirty-Nine Steps
Thirty-Nine Steps | John Buchan
John Buchan wrote The Thirty-Nine Steps while he was seriously ill at the beginning of the First World War. In it he introduces his most famous hero, Richard Hannay, who, despite claiming to be an 'ordinary fellow', is caught up in the dramatic race against a plot to devastate the British war effort. Hannay is hunted across the Scottish moors by police and spy-ring alike, and must outwit his intelligent and pitiless enemy in the corridors of Whitehall and, finally, at the site of the mysterious thirty-nine steps. The best-known of Buchan's thrillers, The Thirty-Nine Steps has been continuously in print since first publication and has been filmed three times. In this, the only critical edition, Christopher Harvie's introduction interweaves the writing of the tale with the equally fascinating story of how John Buchan, publisher and lawyer, came in from the cold and, via The Thirty-Nine Steps, ended the war as spymaster and propaganda chief.

Upon returning home from travels, Richard Hannay is thrust into spy world and a wild goose chase to try to prevent secrets from being exposed. Listened to audio, then viewed the Hitchcock fil from 1938. Movie was better.

Andrew65 A true classic! An excellent film. Well done 👏👏👏 2y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I saw this as a stage show, a couple of years ago and it was great… one of those rare times when the adaptation is better than it‘s source material. 2y

I heard about this book after reading The Riddle of the Sands, and when I realized it was only 3 1/2 hours on audio, it became today‘s afternoon listen. I enjoyed it, but more as an entertaining story of a man wandering around Scotland changing disguises and destroying things to avoid capture than as an early spy thriller.

#1001books #audiobook #audiowalk

Daisey @JazzFeathers I got to this one today, and I did enjoy it more than The Riddle of the Sands. However, I think that's mainly because it was shorter, and I'm more entertained by a man wandering around Scotland in various disguises than one detailing his sailing prowess. 3y
JazzFeathers @Daisey It is a fun read. I enjoyed it too. It's only that the age shows. But then, that's also part of the fun 😜 3y

Two short novels. Supposedly classics. A bit of North by Northwest in the first one, but not too thrilling.

I can kinda see why it‘s a classic, but I just didn‘t connect with it. Still, it filled prompts in for the #decadeschallenge (set in 1910‘s), and 8 of diamonds for #tbrdeckofcards (number in the title). #20in4

This is like a pre-WW1 Bond spy thriller. Or a Bourne. The protagonist is embroiled in international espionage in which he is pursued by the police, government agents, spies; hunted across country by aeroplane & motor cars; and survived a locked room explosion! He‘s quick-thinking and luck is always on his side! Considering it‘s published over 104 yrs ago, expect some flaws but pretty exciting adventure overall. #politicalintrigue #Booked2019

I freely admit I love the bbc remake of this book and picked this up for the cover and a reread. I do like Richard Hannay but the plot is a bit of a mess. Still- nostalgia counts for something!

ManyWordsLater The Hitchcock film is so great and suspenseful! It was that last film he made in the UK. 6y
Booksnchill @ManyWordsLater i agree I love that film but I thought the remake with the female spy was great as well! All the love for both of them! 6y

This is a very classic spy story, maybe not the most believeable but it sounds like fun.

Bailedbailed

It‘s my own fault for not doing any due diligence, because I absolutely loath adventure stories. Yuck. It read like a well-written novelization of a James Bond movie (judging from the two-and-a-half minutes I‘ve ever managed to stomach of that cinematic rot) and I wanted to barf. Instead, I bailed, not quite halfway through.

Ages ago I watched the BBC production of this novel and enjoyed it so much I bought the book... which I then proceeded to not read. Finally did and I didn't like it nearly as much as the movie. May have to see if the movie is available for a rewatch. I'm wondering if I was simply hypnotized by Rupert Penry-Jones into liking a story I didn't actually like. 🤔

Writtern in 1915 I can't help but feel this is James Bond before James Bond was even thought of. I loved this, it's a really short read at just 130 pages but it's awesome, action packed with spies, guns and foiled plots. I really liked the main character, he felt half Ken half action man. Brilliant. This could potentially be my favoriate classic from the early 1900.

After years in Africa, Richard Hannay aims to start a new life in London. Instead he finds himself a hunted man, fleeing for from a web of espionage and murder on the eve of World War I. It's a rollicking adventure novel that was a hit among the troops fighting the war the novel presages. "The story is greatly appreciated in the midst of mud and rain and shells, and all that could make trench life depressing," one soldier wrote to the author.

In another episode of the #bookserendipity that you all know I love so much, I came across a reference to this Hitchcock film, loosely based on the novel by the same name while reading The Secret History for the #readingenvyreadalong. I'd never heard of it and even Googled it to see if it was real. Today, just days later, I heard about a local theater production based on the same book. I absolutely adore when that happens! @ReadingEnvy

ReadingEnvy Also episode 030 of Reading Envy! I ended up reading it too after hearing about it there. It's not the best spy novel ever but it is one of the first! http://readingenvy.blogspot.com/2015/05/reading-envy-030-bring-back-guillotine.h... 7y
PatriciaU There's a more recent production with Rupert Penry Jones in the lead which is pretty good. I saw the theater production last year and it wad wonderful. 7y
Lola @ReadingEnvy That it showed up in a #readingenvy podcast first makes it even more serendipitous ❤️ 7y

Richard Hannay has looked forward to being a man of leisure in London for a number of years. He has put away enough, but finds himself bored when he gets there. Then man he helps winds up dead, and it looks like Hannay is guilty or those who killed the man will be back for him for what he knows.
Hannay flees to Scotland for several weeks to try to get the info to the right people. Around WWII. Spy intrigue. Very short.

Sue I haven't read the story but saw the Hitchcock film. A couple of months ago our local theatre did the play (which has been rewritten as a comedy). It was so good! 8y
