The Christmas Box
The Christmas Box: 20th Anniversary Edition | Richard Paul Evans
12 posts | 28 read | 2 to read
Since it was first published, more than seven million people have been touched by the magic of The Christmas Box, a holiday classic that is as beloved in our time as A Christmas Carol was in Dickens's. When Richard Paul Evans wrote The Christmas Box, he intended it as a private expression of love for his two young daughters, Jenna and Allyson. Though he often told them that he loved them, he didn't feel that they could ever really understand the depth of his feelings until they had experienced the joy of rearing their own children, and by that time their relationship would have changed forever. In writing The Christmas Box, he hoped that at some time in the future they would read the book and know of their father's love. As Evans began to write, he was amazed at the inspiration that flowed into his mind and heart. He completed the moving story of a widow and the young family who comes to live with her in less than six weeks, and bound twenty copies to give as Christmas presents to family and friends. In the following weeks, those twenty copies were shared and passed along from family to family, from friend to friend, and what began as a tale for two little girls became a message of miracles, hope, and healing for people throughout the world.

I had so many visions of John Boy as I read this. I couldn‘t recall how this one ended (I remember watching the movie years ago!), but Richard Paul Evans doesn‘t spare the children in his tiny stories. I kept reading, and hoping, oh please, not Jenna. Whew.

I can see why this is such a popular story for many. That said, I don't have kids, so this didn't have the same impact for me as it probably does for many. Still, a beautifully written tale. #WinterGames2020 #readnosedreindeer #littenlisten #averymerrybingo #festiveflicks #bookishbingo #bookspinbingo #ReadYourWay #CrushTheRush #DashingDecember #ChristmasSpirit #WinterSolstice (×2)

Two of my book clubs chose light holiday fare for December. The tagged book is a little sappy but pleasant #onesitting read. #featuresaholiday #Booked2018

I might be giving this a higher rating because I've always loved the 1995 made-for-TV movie based on this book. This is one of those rare instances where the movie is better than the book. Don't get me wrong, the book has a great message. I just feel it was a little too short with very little conflict, and the characters weren't fleshed out enough. Still, this is a quick read and worth reading this time of year. Find a copy of the movie! 4⭐️

DivineDiana Just discovered this author. On my second Christmas one now! Will look for movie! 🎄 7y
JenlovesJT47 @DivineDiana awesome! The movie is really great for a TV movie. It stars the always gorgeous Maureen O'Hara (she was in her 70s in this and still looked stunning!) and Richard Thomas (John-Boy from the Waltons). I try to watch it every year! 🎄💚🎄❤️🎄 7y
DivineDiana That cast lineup makes me want to find it even more! (edited) 7y
JenlovesJT47 @DivineDiana yes! Most of the time they air it at least once a year on TV, but I'm going to try to track down a copy for myself. 7y

So for today's #LyricalApril prompt, I was originally just going to show one book about someone who takes a holiday. But then I thought "Hey, why don't I just take a picture of my slightly embarrassing horde of holiday novels." So that's what I did. There's Valentine, Halloween, but it's mostly Christmas. Oh, and full disclosure; I had to remove the line of paperbacks in the front of this to be able to take the picture. ? #Holiday @Cinfhen

BooksAndTeaJulie I'm a total sucker for Christmas stories, too. 💕 8y
GypsyKat @JilliePop I'm glad it's not just me! 😊🎄 8y
BethM I looove Christmas novels. I binge them occasionally throughout the year. Same with Hallmark movies 😂 8y

GypsyKat @BethM Oh God! Christmas Hallmark movies are my guilty pleasure! Haha! 8y
Cinfhen Thanks for your dedication 😜we love seeing #shelfies on Litsy 8y
SaraFair There is nothing wrong with that addiction! Isn't it fun collecting? 8y
GypsyKat @SaraFair It is in a way. The funny thing is, I didn't set out to collect holiday novels, I just found I couldn't get rid of any, then I would see one somewhere, and I would pick it up. Lol! I all started innocently enough! 😉 8y
GypsyKat @Cinfhen Haha, it's not a shelf that I take pictures of often. It's stuffed to the brim with mostly used paperbacks. 😉 8y
