Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth | Oliver Jeffers
25 posts | 31 read | 23 to read
#1 TIME Best Book of the Year for 2017! "Moments of human intimacy jostle with scenes that inspire cosmic awe, and the broad diversity of Jeffers's candy-colored humans...underscores the twin messages that 'You're never alone on Earth' and that we're all in this together."--Publisher's Weekly (starred review) Oliver Jeffers, arguably the most influential creator of picture books today, offers a rare personal look inside his own hopes and wishes for his child--and in doing so gifts children and parents everywhere with a gently sweet and humorous missive about our world and those who call it home. Insightfully sweet, with a gentle humor and poignancy, here is Oliver Jeffers' user's guide to life on Earth. He created it specially for his son, yet with a universality that embraces all children and their parents. Be it a complex view of our planet's terrain (bumpy, sharp, wet), a deep look at our place in space (its big), or a guide to all of humanity (dont be fooled, we are all people), Oliver's signature wit and humor combine with a value system of kindness and tolerance to create a must-have book for parents. Praise for Here We Are: -"A sweet and tender distillation of what every Earthling needs to know and might well spend a lifetime striving to achieve. A must-purchase for new parent shelves"--School Library Journal

Very funny! This is the the type of book written to keep parents sane when the children are too young to know the difference. But it‘s actually also educational if a kid wants to go back to it later. It has enough info to spark useful questions and spur kids or their grown ups onto intelligent research tracks. #BBRC PB letter H @LibrarianRyan #TeamGameSleighers @StayCurious

November reading recap: Last month, 17 of 29 books read rated high enough to make the list. https://debbybrauer.org/#november-2021-recap

[Now that I've caught up with November (which was atypically high) I'm only a tiny bit behind on reviews. After today or tomorrow, my reading posts should settle down for a bit, fingers crossed!]

readingjedi I read The Day the Crayons Quit in November too! And October. And September. And August. And every other month too. In fact, it and the sequel are probably my most read books of this year 😅 3y
JoyBlue @readingjedi That's awesome! 😎 You cracked me up! 😂 3y
readingjedi @JoyBlue 7 year olds are relentless! Luckily now it's December I get to read her the Christmas one as well 🤦🏼‍♀️ 3y

After seeing his illustrations for The Day the Crayons Quit last week, I‘m on an Oliver Jeffers kick. In addition to this book, I have two more children‘s books both written and illustrated by Jeffers waiting near the top of my TBR list. Read my full review here: https://debbybrauer.org/#here-we-are-notes-for-living-on-plan...

Thndrstd Have you read Stuck? My daughter and I love that one 3y
JoyBlue @Thndrstd I don't believe I have. I'll check it out soon. Thanks for the recommendation!!!! 💙 3y

Here We Are: Notes for Living On Planet Earth by Oliver Jeffrey is a RF-RA picture book about a boy introducing his new baby brother to facts about earth and all that is in and around it. This book is great to add to a science lesson about the earth and all the things that we need to live. #UCFLAE3414SP21

melodyp UDL 8.1 (heighten salience of goals and objectives) and EL 10 (teach think, pair and share strategies in cooperative groups) are effective strategies for teaching this book.
This website has great resources to use https://www.keepingmykiddobusy.com/blog/2020/1/8/all-about-planet-earth-free-act... to emphasize the importance of
Planet earth.

PatriciaS Thank you ❤️ for this great science resource to add to my list of reads for science activities. Great review and resources too. 4y
DrSpalding I follow this author on social media and he is excellent! I own this book and of course it is a good one for science but also clearly, geography which is social studies. Use good books in other content areas. Nice resource. 4y

This book can be used in the classroom to teach students about our world and living on planet Earth. #ucflae3414su19

Here We Are, a NF picture book written and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers, would be a great story to use for RA. This book explains to children the amazing wonders of our universe! (Cont.) #ucflae3414su19

galacticbees (Cont.) UDL Strategy 1.1 and ESOL strategy 17 would work best with this resource:

This is a great resource to have your students hear the story read aloud! #ucflae3414su19

DrSpalding I have read this on numerous occasions to my social studies students. This is a wonderful book to integrate social studies, specifically geography and literacy. There are many Oliver Jeffers fans in the room now that Dawn has shared the author study. 5y

Here We Are is a RF picture book written and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers. This book is written for a child so they can have basic notes for living on Earth. This book would be a great AS due to the fact the the author also illustrates his own books. He was also a Kohl's Cares author and has written more than 14 books.

UDL: 7.2
This activity has the students building meaningful classroom community by writing compliments about themselves and the planet.

ESOL: 3. Encourage self-talk (positive thinking)
By building a classroom community the positive thinking will soon follow.

Beautiful Illustrations. Beautiful message about caring for our one and only, unique and diverse home. I‘ve already gifted several copies of this book to a few nieces and nephews - including one I bought for myself that I ended up giving away as a gift. It‘s one of my favorite picture books and have already bought another copy (until I gift that one too).

It‘s World Water Week! 💦 my son loves this book, the illustrations are bright and happy, all about Mother Earth. Even though he doesn‘t really understand it yet, I‘m trying to raise a little human that gives a sh*t about the planet. Bonus, you can buy temp tattoos of the animal illustrations from this book at Tattly. 🐙

#HopIntoSpring Day 22: This is a beautiful tribute to #PlanetEarth created by the unparalleled Oliver Jeffers to his son. More than just the simple useful notes that will help Oliver‘s son navigate his way around this planet, it is also meant to convey that as overwhelmed as he may sometimes feel in this big wide world – he is never alone. I absolutely love this book! It is great for a science lesson that you want to squeeze good books into! It contains so much useful information while staying fun and engaging for students. This book takes you throughout our Earth, the even the space surrounding it. Use this book to teach about the world and the people around our students in a cute and creative way! (It's also my favorite that i've posted about so far!!) #UCFLAE3414

sboynt This would be a great story to perform CR with a student or even SR, GR, RA, or IR. I found a great online teacher resource with different activities related to the book at www.harperreach.com/resources/teacher-resources-oliver-jeffers/, which can go along really well with a CR. 7y
sboynt UDL 3.1 to activate prior knowledge is very important for success with this text along with ESOL 5 of teaching technical vocabulary supporting key concepts.

Noelle5 This book sound awesome! And I liked the UDL principles you used! Makes want to buy this book for my future classroom! :) 7y
