Skin Like Mine | Latashia M. Perry
post image
Pickpick

“She wouldn‘t trade for any other shade” This beautifully written book, Skin Like Mine, written by LaTisha M. Perry and illustrated by Bea Jackson, is a RF that truly celebrates diversity. This book illustrates wonderfully how you should love the skin you‘re in; my favorite line in the book was “because, we know it‘s what‘s inside that matters the most”. This is a great book for a class RA and a must have for your library. #ucflae3414

Emmaturtle3 ESOL strategy #22 can be used when asking questions about the text to students during RA. UDL 9.2 is a great guideline that can be used to process any personal struggles students have regarding the color of their skin, a tough yet super important conversation. 4y
Emmaturtle3 This link: https://scenicregional.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Stories-Matter-Book.pdf is an amazing resource for teachers. It has information on how to tackle your own biases, to creating lessons to help students think critically and learn about social justice. I will for sure be using this resource in the future!! 4y
LauraLeighn I love the UDL choice, it works so well with the message of this book! It's so important for students to know they are unique and special all in their own ways, this book will definitely get the message across. Your resource is great as well, with lots of great social justice info. 4y
DrSpalding That is an amazing resource for teachers. I love the quote and the whole theme of the book. This is the type of book you want to add to your classroom library. 4y

Hop on Pop | Seuss

“My father can read big words too. Like....Constantinople and Timbuktu!!” Hop on Pop is a fun P book by Theodore Geisel, a.k.a. the great Dr. Seuss! This book excites children to the max with it‘s fun illustrations, vocabulary, and most importantly the rhyming! I think this book would be great for an AS due to the fact that there are so many great Dr. Seuss books and lots of resources to find information! #ucflae3414

Emmaturtle3 This link: https://www.seussville.com/explore/ is home for all things Dr. Seuss! Students can most definitely use this resource to find tons of information about this author and all the books that he created. ESOL strategy #16 is used when students are integrating the reading and writing activity of an author study to this book. UDL 6.3 is used when students are researching and accessing information online. 4y
Mazzole18 Hop on Pop is a great story when building fluency and teaching student to learn to read. The rhyme and repetition make it fun and easy for students. It is also good for struggling readers to build confidence. Thanks for the resources to help incorporate the wonderful stories of Dr. Seuss in the classroom. 4y
DrSpalding Your website is home for all things Dr. Seuss and kids and adults love it! After providing an author study and many Soose read aloud‘s, you could have a literacy station using the website, in your classroom. 4y

Among the Hidden | Margaret Peterson Haddix

Pickpick

Among the Hidden is a great SF series written by Margaret Peterson Haddix. I guarantee you will be hooked on this series once you begin! What would you do in a world where you were limited to two children, but end up with three?? Follow Luke, the third child‘s story, who struggles to stay hidden, while craving the world! #ucflae3414

ashleyshugars This novel would best serve as a LC book. Here is a complete week by week guide for LC groups! http://images.pcmac.org/SiSFiles/Schools/TN/HawkinsCounty/ChurchHillMiddle/Uploa.... What a great resource! This would be perfect in conjunction with UDL strategy 2.1 and ESOL strategy 2! 4y
DrSpalding This is a fantastic series of books! What a fabulous resource. I have read the first five or so. I do not have all of the universal design nor English learner strategies committed to memory so without the verbiage I do not know if you are aligning them appropriately. 4y

SkippyJon Jones | Judy Schachner

SkippyJon Jones By Judy Schachner is a great F book to do a RA with the class. This Siamese cat not an ordinary cat, he has a large head, big ears, and a small tail. Since he looks different, he believes that he is a Chihuahua. After going into his closet, he is transported to another world where he goes by “El Skippito” a great sword fighter and his journey begins. You‘re going to have to read it to find out what happens next. #ucflae3414

Viviannef It is a New York Times Best Seller. UDL principle 6.4 Enhance capacity for monitoring progress and ESOL strategy 24Incorporate the culture and the language of second language learners in your curriculum. This ESOL strategy will be helpful especially since there are many words within the story that are in Spanish. 4y
Viviannef https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/skippyjon-jone... - This website provides a wonderful lesson plan for teachers to use this book in the classroom. An activity specified within the lesson that works great with the ESOL strategy I chose is to make a list of all the Spanish words that students can find within the story. 4y
dbears1 Great post Vivian ! This is a great book that expresses diversity , with a billingual approach. The lesson plan and UDL also lines well this this book.I will definitely add this book to my classroom collection. 4y
Viviannef Correcting myself ** the genre of this book is MF 4y
DrSpalding Correction noted. This is modern fantasy at its best. The Spanish terms provide the opportunity for you to truly teach two languages. I really like the idea of having a bilingual word wall. Think about creating QR codes for Spanish words that you place right next to the English word on your word wall. 4y

An RF book about a witty, kind, and extraordinary 5th grade boy who may look a little different, but is courageous as he steps into his first year of middle school life. Get your upper elementary students discussing the importance of being kind, not bullying, and family in RA‘s or IR with Auggie Pullman.
#ucflae3414

RaivionneC This book is perfectly aligned with fostering collaboration and community(8.3) and ESOL strategies of promoting cooperation and encouraging positive thinking and self talk. ( 1 and 2). Here is a link for great activities https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/wonder 5y

This picture book is about a mans love for two countries, the USA and Japan and his constant desire to go back and forth over the course of his life. UDL principle 2.4 which is promote understanding across language which can be portrayed with this book.

Wonder | R. J. Palacio

This RF book by R.J, Palacio is about Augie Pullman transition into middle school. He was born with a craniofacial abnormality and his parents try to transfer him from home school to a private middle school. It follows him making friends, being bullied, and finding his way in middle school, being accepted for who he is. It won the Young Reader in 2015. #ucflae3414

maciforster This book would be great for IR since it is a chapter book. The students would be able to discuss and read it at their own pace to be able to fully comprehend the book. You could use UDL strategy 3.2 to help develop the relationships throughout the book. Also with EL strategy #2 when doing a discussion to help those struggling along the way 5y
maciforster This website is great for activities you can do with your students related to the book: https://www.google.com/amp/s/thediscoveryapple.com/2017/10/16/10-activities-and-... 5y
DrSpalding I am so happy you chose this independent literature circle option. I believe this book should be read by all teachers. 5y

The Polar Express | Chris Van Allsburg
post image
Pickpick

One of the most underrated holiday stories comes to life in this F book written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg. A young boy takes a magical train to the North Pole on Christmas Eve. He finds out that one of the children will be selected to receive the first gift of Christmas from Santa. Who will be picked? What will they get? Most importantly, do you still believe? This book won a Caldecott Medal for its fantastic illustrations.

Jgolub13 This book provides a great opportunity to use the culture of many students who celebrate Christmas. This is why I believe that ESOL strategy #24 Incorporate the culture and the language of second language learners in your curriculum is perfect. I also believe that UDL principle Activate or supply background knowledge (3.1) fits as well. This should activate background knowledge in many of the students. 5y
Jgolub13 I love this lesson from scholastic. It assesses comprehension by having students “record a podcast“ to tell the story of The Polar Express to the generations after the students. That way they will believe forever, and the teacher can assess the student's comprehension. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/polar-express-... #ucflae3414 (edited) 5y
DrSpalding Several of your peers have highlighted this book! It is perfect for this time of year and your resource is stellar. Podcasts assist in oral language development and are engaging tools to use in your classroom. 5y

This NF this a fun picture book to share with the class in a RA. The fun facts about animals and how big or small they are will build the interest of young readers. This would be great following up learning about animals after a science lesson on animals. For an ESOL strategy, I would sit in a small group with the students and go over the facts again for comprehension, not memorization. #ucflae3414

YesseniaN UDL principle: Promote understanding across languages (2.4)
As a classroom activity, I would suggest having the students do some research either on the computer or at a school library on an animal and have them write at least three facts and draw a picture. http://www.houghtonmifflinbooks.com/readers_guides/pdfs/JenkinsGuide.pdf

DrSpalding This is narrative nonfiction at its best. What a great book to incorporate math and language arts. Going to the publisher is a wise choice. Their resources truly show you how to integrate these quality titles into your classroom instruction. 5y
