Every Last Word
Every Last Word | Tamara Ireland Stone
If you could read my mind, you wouldn't be smiling. Samantha McAllister looks just like the rest of the popular girls in her junior class. But hidden beneath the straightened hair and expertly applied makeup is a secret that her friends would never understand: Sam has Purely-Obsessional OCD and is consumed by a stream of dark thoughts and worries that she can't turn off. Second-guessing every move, thought, and word makes daily life a struggle, and it doesn't help that her lifelong friends will turn toxic at the first sign of a wrong outfit, wrong lunch, or wrong crush. Yet Sam knows she'd be truly crazy to leave the protection of the most popular girls in school. So when Sam meets Caroline, she has to keep her new friend with a refreshing sense of humor and no style a secret, right up there with Sam's weekly visits to her psychiatrist. Caroline introduces Sam to the Poet's Corner, a hidden room and a tight-knit group of misfits who have been ignored by the school at large. Sam is drawn to them immediately, especially a guitar-playing guy with a talent for verse, and starts to discover a whole new side of herself. Slowly, she begins to feel more "normal" than she ever has as part of the popular crowd . . . until she finds a new reason to question her sanity and all she holds dear.

I read this book in one day! The story draws you in and makes you want to keep reading. It also does a wonderful job of showing how a person with OCD might struggle or think. Overall a good book with a great plot twist!

This book is about a girl who suffers from OCD but tries to keep it hidden to appear normal. She then discovers a secret room of poets. The mental health rep in this is pretty good and it has a surprising plot twist I didn‘t see coming.

Sam is a high school student who struggles to hide her OCD from judgemental but popular and fun friends. She struggles to keep intruding thoughts at bay while trying to seem normal like every other student. Then one day, she meets Caroline, a witty girl with a great sense of humour, who introduces Sam to Poet‘s Corner. It‘s a secret room that a group of misfits meet at.

Ily_vuc Poet‘s Corner changes Sam for the better and helps her believe that she doesn‘t need layers of makeup and a fake personality to have a good high school experience. However, even that won‘t help Sam when she finds out something she would never have imagined possible. 3y
Ily_vuc If you enjoy books that include mental health issues and everyday struggles of high school students, then this would be a good book for you.
One theme in this story is the importance of having someone to talk to. Caroline and Sue, Sam‘s psychiatrist, are always there to support Sam. They‘re the ones that help her face her fears and accept her for who she is.

Every Last Word is a about a girl named Sam who has OCD. Sam tries to hide her OCD from everyone, because she believes everyone will think she's crazy. The character development in this book was wonderful! I've never read a book like this, but I'm very glad I did. Tamara Stone did a great job of bringing the struggles of OCD to light! Every Last Word was great book and the plot twist was very shocking!

Picked this up on a whim at the library yesterday and read it straight through once I got home.

It‘s interesting: I almost bailed 20 pages in because the main character was so annoying (shallow, mean, boy-crazy). I‘m so glad I kept reading. Sam grows and changes a lot and there is a lot more to her story than first meets the eye. By the end I was in tears. It‘s not a perfect book, but I appreciate what that author was doing and recommend it.

I enjoyed this book a lot. It shines a light on OCD, a subject I only know a little about, but the author did a great job with the research on the topic. Sam is a flawed (in her own mind) but likable character and I really love that poetry was her way of coping with her illness.

LiteraryinPA Very cool. Have you ever read Turtles all the way down? That‘s another one that deals with this topic in young people. 5y
OriginalCyn620 @LiteraryinLititz no, I haven‘t but I‘ll have to check it out! 5y
ravenlee Have you seen this one? It‘s not the best story, honestly, but the depiction of adolescent, undiagnosed OCD is very good. Author based it on his own experiences. 5y

All the feels! Add another favorite writer to your YA contemporary list. Stone is right up there with Jenn Bennett, Julie Buxbaum and Brigid Kemmerer. This book was a solid 4 stars but leaned towards 4.5 at the end. This is my first read of the new year and I hope that's a sign of a good reading year ahead!

I don't know if I can put into words how much I loved this book! This book gave me all the feels. Samantha in high school. She is dealing with normal high school issues as well as trying to hide from her friends that she has OCD and anxiety. But when she meets a new friend Caroline and she introduces her to the Poet's Corner it changes her whole life. I loved seeing Sam develop into the person she became. Even if it broke me heart along the way!

How sad is it that I perfectly connect to this part :(

SW-T I suspect it‘s something we all ponder from time to time. 6y
Erinreadsthebooks Same here 🙋‍♀️ 6y
ZeinaHesham @SW-T Yeah but i do more than a time to time ponder. Every little action they do that I might feel the little bit left out in I start to get conscious about me as a friend. Do they want me as a friend? Am I annoying? I never really had these before but in I believe 8th grade my friends left me for two years without explanination. They all turned on me, saying mean stuff and all that. Even though we knew each other from kindergarten all of us 6y
See All 6 Comments
ZeinaHesham The problem was resolved anyway in the third year, they apologized and we are back at being friends all of us. But the effect they had left on me doesn't really go away anymore 6y
SW-T OMG! They bailed on you for two years? That was definitely them, not you. Understand why you feel the way you do now. Some things we forgive but don‘t forget and something like that would definitely have you questioning every interaction for clues because you never want to repeat such a bad experience. I‘m sorry they treated you that way and while I don‘t know you well, I think you‘re fine the way you are ☺️ 6y
ZeinaHesham @SW-T Thank you so much. 🖤 6y

This book really spoke to me. As someone who has struggled with anxiety and depression since grade school, I felt the protagonist‘s pain in many of the situations. I also found writing to be a form of catharsis for me and have remained an avid poet since I was 14. This book also opened my eyes about OCD. The author put a great deal of research into the diagnosis and gave a very vivid picture of the pain caused by this disorder. My father has OCD⬇️

TommieMarie74 and, while I‘ve watched his struggle for decades, I don‘t think I really understood what it meant. This book made me see my father in a new light. And it‘s made me want to learn more about this side of him that causes him such great pain. 7y
