The Toymakers
The Toymakers | Robert Dinsdale
The Emporium opens with the first frost of winter. It is the same every year. Across the city, when children wake to see ferns of white stretched across their windows, or walk to school to hear ice crackling underfoot, the whispers begin: the Emporium is open! Christmas is coming, and the goose is getting fat... It is 1917, and London has spent years in the shadow of the First World War. In the heart of Mayfair, though, there is a place of hope. A place where childrens dreams can come true, where the impossible becomes possible that place is Papa Jacks Toy Emporium. For years Papa Jack has created and sold his famous magical toys: hobby horses, patchwork dogs and bears that seem alive, toy boxes bigger on the inside than out, instant trees that sprout from boxes, tin soldiers that can fight battles on their own. Now his sons, Kaspar and Emil, are just old enough to join the family trade. Into this family comes a young Cathy Wray homeless and vulnerable. The Emporium takes her in, makes her one of its own. But Cathy is about to discover that while all toy shops are places of wonder, only one is truly magical...

I had almost given up on this book! It starts pretty sad, and I just can't handle sad right now. I thought I'd give it a couple more pages and yes, the heroine comes through and makes a decision on her own of what her life is and is going to be.

What a perfect time of year to read this magical book. I‘d have to say that it‘s up there as one of my all time favorite books so far.I feel the the toy emporium depicted in this book symbolizes life (especially the holiday season), and how you feel about it as a child. This story sparked my imagination. As I was reading, there were times I felt that I was in the emporium.I hope that I find a place as magical as this to visit one day.LOVED this book!

“When you were young, what you want out of toys is to feel grown-up. You play with toys and cast yourself an adult, and imagine life the way it‘s going to be. Yet, when you are grown, that changes; now what you want out of toys is to feel young again. You want to be back there, in a place that did not harm nor hurt you, in a pocket of time built out of memory and love.”

....I'm having a problem with this one. Poor Cathy...who has the character development of paper and seems to only exist to be the Manic Pixie Dreamgirl for the brothers and has one line of dialogue to the brothers' eighty....is in labor and the boys are still squabbling and being brats despite the fact that they are grown ass men. Okay, this may be a DNF soon if it doesn't get better...

Christmas books ~ yay or nay?

A year ago, my answer would have been an emphatic “no.” That‘s because I hadn‘t properly explored the world of Christmas books. Outside of A Christmas Carol, I perceived most Christmas stories to be either romances or heartwarming tales, and while there are some exceptions (like a heartwarming dog story),

Continued ⬇️

abookishbutterfly those types of books don‘t appeal to me. I hadn‘t realized there was a world of Christmas ghost stories outside of the Dickens‘ classic (like The Apple Tree) and dark fairytales, like The Toymakers, are definitely my type. 5y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego They're growing on me. It's all I've have the attention span for this year. I'm not really into the romancy stories but I'd give one a go, if it was a quick read. 5y

Do you have any books that you started earlier this year, set aside, and hope to finish before the year ends?

I read roughly 200 pages of The Toymakers back in August. So much of it was beautiful and magical but I was not ready to face what I sensed was coming. I took a break - a much longer break than I‘d intended - and I hope to finally get to the end this month.

Reagan Atonement. Started this summer and am very slowly plodding away. It is beautiful and lovely and hearwrenching which is part of the reason why I am going so slowly. 5y

Really quite different plot to what I'd assumed.
It has the fairytale element whilst including a moral theme which is so relevant even now.
I particularly appreciated the final section and the way in which the story changes, it made me think of Narnia and the first time the children go through the wardrobe.
The war theme is very well displayed.

I loved this book so much!!
It was a solid 4-star read for most of it, but the ending was spectacular. If you‘re drawn even a little to the “fairytale for adults” genre, this is for you.
The story isn‘t light-hearted, however, and deals with some dark themes, like war, guilt, and hubris.
I can‘t rave enough about this book.

Historical fiction with fantasy.Beautiful metaphors but I didn't see a well integration of the story. The beginning was all about magic: "Are you lost? Are you afraid? Are you a child at heart? So we are, The Emporium" a place where toys are alive. This is Cathy experience in Emporioum. Some scenes were long. The near end is dark, not expected for me but end is too happy, but in general I enjoyed it.Cover is?Not a happy story 3.4⭐️In GR it has 4⭐️

Avanders I agree on that cover 🤗 The book was definitely not what I was expecting! Love your pic ♥️ 6y
Gissy @Avanders Thank you for the picture comment. I thought this book would be related with Christmas and Nutcracker I don't know something like that. But it was more drama and the magic part was not well integrated in the story. But there are some beautiful metaphors that keep you reading😱Weird sensation😳 6y

Papa Jack‘s Emporium only opens after the first frost. What‘s inside is truly magical. Toys come to life, childhoods are renewed, and lives are changed. Every time I‘m in a foreign city I go to visit a bookstore. My local bookstores at home don‘t have an English section. The Waterstones first at Trafalgar Square (they didn‘t have Vicious) and Piccadilly Circus were a paradise for me! I did it! I finished this! And yes, I needed tissues in the end.

The rather poor editing put me off more than once. The book could easily be 50 pages shorter and would not lose any of the magic within.

A good read, but did not meet my expectations, which were probably very high due to the reviews the book got so far.

Not the first 'wrong word' in this book. And I'm not yet in the three-digit page numbers. Heavens! No proofreading? Someone should have spotted this.

Honestly, for a book being sold in hardcover, I'd expect the publishers to take more care.

How does an error like this even happen? Auto-predict? Was this written on a mobile?
I get spelling errors but wrong words like the one above?
