A fun read, definitely differs from the late 90s movie adaptation.

Gah! Went to start a new (to me) book, and the front cover fell off. 😳 I think this one cost about 50 cents at the FotL bookshop, so it's not like it was just off the press, but still.

Bookwomble Gacgh! I hate that! 😠 3y
Bookzombie I‘m sorry about your book, but I‘m curious why this was controversial as it says on the cover. I‘m also curious how it differs from the movie. 🙂 3y
Traci1 @Bookzombie I wondered about that too and looked it up. Apparently there's a thought that it is pro-fascist. I haven't gotten very far, and so far it seems to promote this idea of 'civic virtue' saying that military service is the only way to be a good citizen. Idk. I doubt Heinlein and I would be buddies, but I'm giving it a shot. I remember thinking the movie was pretty awful, but I saw it when it was fairly new, so it's been a while. 3y
Bookzombie @Traci1 I‘m of the camp that I enjoyed the movie because it was bad, lol. I always took the propaganda films and ideas of good citizenship as humorous in the movie. 🤔 3y

Pretty interesting read. Was expecting more bugs, but got a lot of philosophical talk. Highlighted tons of quotes and will definately reread it. Now I just gotta rewatch the movie.. took me on and off around eight hours to read this. It's not very long, but there were a few dense sections that were a bit of a slog.

I'm going to bed for work now, will calculate points later.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! I also really like that simple cover. 3y
night_shift @TheAromaofBooks same! Better than the pulpy covers it's had in the past. 3y

I enjoyed STARSHIP TROOPERS way more than I expected to, given I‘m apparently the only Litten who hated the movie. (I was very young when I saw it. Maybe I‘d feel differently now.) It‘s absolutely got an Agenda, caps necessary, and I spent a lot of time interrogating my response to it, but it‘s also very much a How Stuff Works book wrapped up in a military-flavoured School Story.

ie, it‘s My Thing, even though I didn‘t always agree with it.

twohectobooks I LOVED this book and haven‘t seen the movie. I‘d kind of like to revisit the book actually now that I know more about Heinlein although I hope that wouldn‘t spoil the fun. So many people knock it these days that I was getting worried I was the only one who enjoyed this book. 5y
Butterfinger I hated it too. I don't like sci-fi except for Star Wars and the only reason I watched it was because it had Days of Our Lives Austin on it. I used to love Patrick Muldoon and now I watch him in Christmas movies. 🤣😍😍 5y
RamsFan1963 @xicanti Like most adaptations, the movie and the book are two different animals, both can be enjoyed separate for the other. I like the book better, but the movie has its moments. 5y

xicanti @twohectobooks I know nothing about Heinlein as a person, but I always expected a very specific type of thing from his books because of how people talk about STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND. In her tome on the Hugos, Jo Walton cites that as a Not So Good Heinlein both on its own account and as something that‘s coloured everyone‘s impressions of him, so I decided to take her word for it and try his other stuff. I‘m glad I did. 5y
xicanti @Butterfinger it‘s been a looooooong time since I saw the movie so I‘ve basically forgotten all the actors‘ faces except for Denise Richards, but I thought it was horribly acted and I was disgusted when it ended with the characters gleefully committing genocide. From the way people gush about it on here, I dunno if Young Me took it too seriously or got something wrong or what. 5y
xicanti @RamsFan1963 I‘m gonna see if I can get my hands on the movie and give it a shot from an adult perspective. 5y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk So here‘s my history with this one: I saw the movie in the theater when I was probably too young because the action is really grisly, but I have watched it several times as an adult and it really is a satire of right-wing pro-war looneys. We‘re supposed to be chilled by the ending. Neil Patrick Harris even shows up at the end in what equates to an SS uniform. 5y
Graywacke Wait, people liked this movie? I remember when it came out and just assumed it would awful...so I never saw it. Glad the book is good. 5y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk I read the book (with a movie poster cover no less) and didn‘t get it at all, but I understand now that the movie had primed young me to be looking for all the wrong things. I‘ve thought often about giving it another go in recent years. 5y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Graywacke I highly recommend googling Starship Troopers and satire or even Starship Troopers and anti-fascism. There are lots of good think pieces out there. 5y
RamsFan1963 @xicanti Paul Verhoeven, director of Robocop and Total Recall, has a very dark, cynical sense of humor. If you look at Starship Troopers as a satire on government and the military mindset, you might see it in a different light. 5y
Graywacke @TobeyTheScavengerMonk huh, had no idea. Thanks! @RamsFan1963 I never realized these movies were satire. I just thought they were silly. Need to rethink my movie watching. (Recently saw John Wick 3 - it was fun but ridiculous, but maybe it was also satire...) (edited) 5y
xicanti @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I‘ve almost talked myself into trying it again. Hopefully it‘ll be on TV soon, but if not, the library‘s got one copy. 5y

I absolutely loved the 1997 movie adaptation of this book. Imagine my surprise when I found out that the movie was actually a satire of the book. The book was deadly serious in its message of military propaganda at the beginning of the Cold War (and was controversial for its time) and the movie was a kitschy dismantling of the original message. However, I found them to both be good stories with effective messages.

Seekingtardis Agreed! Love love loved the movie and loved the book even with their vast differences!! 6y

Yes! Ladies and Gents the best B movie ever is on! I watch this movie damn near every time it comes on because its so cheesy and glorious! I definitely reading the book which is much different from the movie and really interesting. You'll get an amazing laugh when you realize how garbage the casting was! I can't stop watching!

TheNextBook @Bookzombie @LauraJ why is this movie so entertaining! There are still parts that I squirm at like during training when the guy gets lasered in the head. Or the brain bug. But I love the beginning! That "prom"! ??? 7y

Recommended to me several years ago, by a Navy chaplain of all people, while we were underway together. It finally came up in the queue. Fascinating discussion of social responsibility and franchise. I'm a sucker for a good military training novel. This one isn't as consistently compelling as Dorsai! or Red Rising, so, for some, it might be better to audiobook rather than to read.

12read I also first read this underway. Former SK here. One of the best thought provoking books i have ever read. (edited) 8y

This should be considered a science fiction classic!

TheNextBook @anmar25 This basically takes place in the future. Earth is being attacked by aliens which would look at as giant bugs. They've become really hostile and we our on the defensive now and have to defeat them on their own planet! Great science fiction 8y
