Slow reader and I like big books, so there‘s the rub. But at least there‘s coffee. ☕️

Just starting this. Already having trouble putting it down. Heinlein has a way of getting you hooked from the start.

Don Quixote | Miguel de Cervantes
Pickpick

It took me three weeks to finish it, but c‘mon, at over 900 pages, not bad for a slow reader like myself. And I gotta say I get it now why this book is considered such a big deal in the western canon. Cervantes was using postmodern techniques in the 17th century, for chrissakes! Unbelievable. No review I could write would do it justice. All I can say is, if you haven‘t read it yet, do yourself a favor and crack it open. You won‘t regret it.

Okay, here‘s my complete #christmasbookhaul. Now, I realize the Mussolini book is a bit of a strange one. But I am currently reading Kaputt, set in WWII, and the main character (the author, Malaparte, as this book is written from his experiences) was an Italian reporter, and Il Duce is frequently referenced, and I realized I knew nothing about him. Also, it occurred to me that it would be informative of how a fascist dictator came into power.

This book holds a special place in my heart. It got me through the difficult time of when my father was dying. I‘m not sure how I would have been able to cope without it.

Crime and Punishment | Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky

My daughter has just started reading this, such a great novel. I hope she enjoys it as much as I did when I read it, and that it spurs her on to tackle #TheBrothersKaramazov — one of my favorite books of all time.

Another book I got for Christmas. I wonder if anyone here has read it. #bookhaul #christmasbookhaul

I‘m looking forward to getting to this before the end of the year. The friend who sent it to me said it was amazing.

The Adventures and Misadventures of Maqroll | Edith Grossman, Alvaro Mutis

Another Christmas present, this book looks promising. Also published by NYRB Classics, who put out some really great works. Right up there with Dalkey, imo. Translated by Grossman, I had also recently purchased her translation of “Don Quixote,” which I plan on reading next year. 2025 is shaping up to be the year of the weighty tome, for which I am quite excited. #bookhaul #christmasbookhaul

A Naked Singularity: A Novel | Sergio De La Pava

One of the books I received as a Christmas gift. Looking forward to tackling it in the upcoming year. I do prefer long and challenging reads, so we‘ll see how it measures up, as it‘s been compared to some of my favorites (Infinite Jest, Gravity‘s Rainbow and Moby Dick.) #bookhaul #christmasbookhaul
