Adrian Mole Diaries
Adrian Mole Diaries | Sue Townsend
10 posts | 36 read | 35 to read
The trouble with trying to read passages from the Adrian Mole Diaries aloud is that you find yourself laughing so hard you cant go on. Its that kind of book. Kansas City Star As sad and devastating as it is laugh-out-loud funny. A delight! New York Times The agonizingly funny, captivatingly poignant journals of Englands bespotted everyboy are now available again. An international phenomenon and perennial favorite since their initial publication made a splash in Thatchers Britain more than twenty years ago, The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Age 13 is now side-by-side with its hilarious sequel The Growing Pains of Adrian Mole in this collected single volume.

Winston and I will try not to take offense. 😂 We‘re finding this book very endearing, but it‘s a lot of teenage boy (Townshend‘s writing is convincing) and we think it‘s probably best, for us, read in smallish doses between other books.

Update: Adrian has grown on me & I‘d like to read the rest of the series!

wanderinglynn Winston is adorable! That face! ❤️🐶 3y
rachelk @wanderinglynn Thank you! I think he‘s pretty cute too. 😊 3y

Congratulations to the warm and wonderful @Lizpixie on 1000 followers! To celebrate, she is doing a lovely giveaway and has asked us what authors make us happy. Here's one of mine.

I reread these books after my Mom died when I didn't feel like reading anything at all for quite a long time ... and I laughed and laughed. Cheers to the restorative power of reading and to you, Liz! 😘

TrishB Lovely post 💓 these are hubby's go to anti-depressives too. 7y
Bette I loved these books as well. ❤️👍 7y
Centique I loved these too and the stage show was my first experience of going to a big “proper” theatre. @rubyslippersreads The Queen and I is my best friends favourite book. I‘m sure she made me read it but it was so long ago! 7y
shawnmooney I loved the first one of the series when I was a teenager! Townsend's life, writing and otherwise, was quite fascinating and often quite sad. Have you investigated? 7y
LeahBergen @mrp27 Thank you! 7y

LeahBergen @Bette Yes! 😘 7y
LeahBergen @Centique The stage show? That would be so much fun! 7y
LeahBergen @shawnmooney I haven't! Should I? Or is it TOO sad? 7y
shawnmooney I'm sure you can handle it – it would probably make you appreciate the humor in her writing that much more, knowing more about the challenges she faced. I would start with the New York Times obituary. 7y
LeahBergen @shawnmooney Thanks! I'll check that out. 👍🏻 7y

Bailedbailed

#unpopularopinion time. I just can't with this book. Everyone kind of sucks and is self-involved, I didn't think it was funny, and I feel SO BAD for that dog. 45 pages in and I bailed.

Oh well! On to the next!

LeahBergen Noooo!!!!! 😱 7y
LauraBrook @LeahBergen I know! I've been recommended this book for over 15 years, and I'm disappointed that I couldn't hack it. I'll give the tv series a try, though, maybe that'll work better? 7y
batsy I second @LeahBergen: Oh nooooooooo 7y
TrishB These books are hubby's comfort blankets! I know he's having a stressful time if these come out at night. Me however - meh, I'm with you! 7y

After an 800-page novel about pedophiles and child abuse, I needed something lighter! I hope this does the trick. I recently read that Sue Townsend was Britain's bestselling author of the 1980s, yet I feel like no one here across the pond talks (or even knows) about these books. Have you read them?

BestOfFates As an American, definitely hadn't heard of it until a few years ago. 8y
CherylDeFranceschi I read this quite a while back, but I remember enjoying it. 8y
Susannah I do remember seeing these at book fairs when I was in elementary school (in the Eighties), though I don't know if they get attention from kids these days. I thought the books about Adrian as a kid were much better than the one(s?) when he's an adult. 8y

Texasblues Yikes - you have a stronger constitution than I. Pedophiles and child abuse are two things that just make me go "no thanks". 8y
Kosugi I read them as a tween. Being in Canada kind of makes you more aware of British authors. 8y
shawnmooney I read & loved the first novel in the series as a geeky teen in Canada. Townsend died a year or so ago after a life of many severe health challenges and never stopped writing throughout. Google her obit to get a sense of what an amazing woman she was. And hilarious. 8y
Notafraidofwords @Texasblues Same. It's a huge no no. Rape, too. I've been wanting to read. A Little Life, but I'm so afraid because everyone says there's so much abuse. 8y
Texasblues @Notafraidofwords I hear you - I don't watch shows with that kind of stuff in it either. I guess I feel like there is enough terrible stuff in the world, I want not terrible stuff to happen in my entertainment. Although I do read a lot of dystopian fic, so maybe it's just "real" terrible stuff. 8y
Trav Yes! We read them in primary school (Australia) and loved them. Although we used to laugh at anything remotely cheeky, you know, because your humour is so well-refined at the age of 7 😂 8y
Hazel0303 @Notafraidofwords unfortunately, you may have trouble with A Little Life. I like to think I have a pretty strong constitution, but that one I just couldn't do. I finally said to myself, you don't NEED to finish this. No one is forcing you. So glad that I did. 8y
Notafraidofwords @Hazel0303 I'm happy about my decision, because I tend to push through regardless and then spent weeks feeling sad. 8y
Tarlia Yup! Read most of it except the more recent ones. Adrian Mole was a popular among readers here in Malaysia back before the YA and kidlit resurgence. 8y
Caryl I remember reading about the Adrian Mole books, and Townsend, when she died. Adding to my TBR list! (And those hot dogs: Yum.) 8y
Liberty @Caryl They're veggie dogs! And quite delicious, surprisingly. 8y
Verity Yup! I read Adrian mole when I was in my early teens. I haven't read all the most recent ones though. But then I am in the UK... 8y
Keryntalia The Adrian Mole books are wonderful - snarky, occasionally snort-worthy and possessed of what feels like a very realistic (British) teen worldview. I remember a few trenchant political points about Thatcherism in there too. 8y
Taylor Ha what? You read that entire 800 page novel in one day?! 8y
Liberty @Taylor Just doing my job. 😄 8y
MelindaOtt Loved these books. I read them as a kid and liked them, but it wasn't until I read them as an adult that I "got them." 8y
Rio_Youers Iconic books in the UK. Funny as hell. Loved the series when I was a kid, but they may feel a little dated now. 8y
HarperPerennial These are Caitlin Moran's favorites! 8y
RealLifeReading I read all the Adrian Mole series when I was a teenager. But that may have been because I grew up in Singapore (former British settlement) 8y
LauraBrook Have had these on my shelves for years, sadly they're still unread. I have another of her adult novels too - also unread. 8y
akfreeborn Loved these-read them when I studied at St. Andrews for a break from my academic work! Great fun! 8y
LeahBergen Oh, I adore that Adrian Mole! 8y
read.run.travel I'm currently reading The Woman Who Went to Bed For a Year by Townsend - it's good so far! 8y
Clare_Riley I read these books as a teenager (about the same age as Adrian Mole), and I can remember laughing myself silly over his escapades. I think we had a lot in common (social ineptness in particular!!). Brilliant book - enjoy!! 8y
Sue Oh wow! I read these about a million years ago (ie, in the 80s) I haven't thought about them for years! 8y
AnnieMay These books defined my childhood, enjoy!! 8y
ClaireCameron Hot dogs for the win. 8y
literaticat I adore Adrian Mole and quote the first book almost daily. 8y
ElvinaGB I love the Adrian Mole books and her others are just as good. 8y
BookishBron So good! 8y
GuiltyFeat The first book came out when I was roughly 13 & 3/4 so it always felt a little close to the knuckle for me. 8y
