The Queen and I
The Queen and I | Sue Townsend
The Monarchy has been dismantled When a Republican party wins the General Election, their first act in power is to strip the royal family of their assets and titles and send them to live on a housing estate in the Midlands. Exchanging Buckingham Palace for a two-bedroomed semi in Hell Close (as the locals dub it), caviar for boiled eggs, servants for a social worker named Trish, the Queen and her family learn what it means to be poor among the great unwashed. But is their breeding sufficient to allow them to rise above their changed circumstance or deep down are they really just like everyone else? 'No other author could imagine this so graphically, demolish the institution so wittily and yet leave the family with its human dignity intact.' The Times 'Absorbing, entertaining . . . the funniest thing in print since Adrian Mole.' Ruth Rendell, Daily Telegraph 'Kept me rolling about until the last page.' Daily Mail www.suetownsend.com

I really enjoyed this book. However, unlike the blurbs said, it didn't make me laugh out loud. But other books by this author have.

Oh I loved this! It really made me belly laugh. Just the absolute silliness of it at times was hilarious to me. The book was written really well and made me quite proud to be British❤️ loved it, really recommend!

Poor Prince Philip.

Still, it could‘ve been worse, and it IS worse in this hilarious comedy from the 1990s.

I read it recently and it was the perfect read to lighten the spirits.

Connster I loved this one! It‘s done really cleverly. Really enjoyed it! 6y
Libby1 @Connster - so did I! My husband was cross about the ending, though! 6y
Connster @Libby1 I was too! Bit of a cop-out! 6y

Birdsong28 @miralunasbooknook The book is so good!! Can't wait! Also there is 6y
Libby1 Did you see it, @Birdsong28 ? I didn‘t because I don‘t have Sky. I just read the book recently and loved it! 6y
Birdsong28 @Libby1 It was good, but I felt the programme was rushed and obviously it didn't have Diana and that situation in it so it felt like something was missing. Also try 6y

rubyslippersreads @Zelma I love Adrian Mole too. And she wrote one about Camilla that's also on my TBR list. 8y
Zelma @rubyslippersreads interesting! I am always a sucker for fiction using real people as characters. 8y
