Odd Child Out
Odd Child Out: A Novel | Gilly Macmillan
How well do you know the people you love? Best friends Noah Sandler and Abdi Mahad have always been inseparable. But when Noah is found floating unconscious in Bristol's Feeder Canal, Abdi can't--or won't--tell anyone what happened. Just back from a mandatory leave following his last case, Detective Jim Clemo is now assigned to look into this unfortunate accident. But tragedy strikes and what looked like the simple case of a prank gone wrong soon ignites into a public battle. Noah is British. Abdi is a Somali refugee. And social tensions have been rising rapidly in Bristol. Against this background of fear and fury two families fight for their sons and for the truth. Neither of them know how far they will have to go, what demons they will have to face, what pain they will have to suffer. Because the truth hurts.

EadieB Neither of them know how far they will have to go, what demons they will have to face, what pain they will have to suffer. The book is told from multiple POVs and the plot is slowly laid out as you watch how their friendship got to this place. I'm looking forward to Gilly's next book as I enjoyed her writing. Fantastic read. Compelling mystery. Characters that are very layered and so interesting. The story is told from two different view points, a wealthy white family and a refugee family. I loved reading the different perspectives.

This was a pretty good mystery. Two boys who are best friends go out late at night, and one of them ends up sunk in a canal. Because one is Somali, there are racial prejudices involved and fanned by an unscrupulous reporter. The writer tries a strange experiment of using first person narrative for two separate characters, which just causes confusion about who is talking at the beginning of a chapter. Still, overall well written, good read.

Does anyone arrange their books on their shelves by color? I don‘t but I‘d like to reorganize them that way soon! It would probably make it a lot easier for me to create an #ombrestack in the future! I made this one for the #ombrestackchallenge on #bookstagram. I‘m a little late to the game since she posted the challenge a few days ago but better late than never, right?

Beatlefan129 I like your mug 😊 5y

Day 7: Mystery #agameoffavorites
I chose Gilly MacMillan. Though are her books are classified as thriller or crime, they are mysteries. In a list of books she enjoys, she mentioned that she had recently enjoyed a new translation of The Pledge by Friedrich Durrenmatt which she had long loved. Look for her next book, I Know You Know.

Thank you @aroc for sending back Odd Child Out! (Love your new envelopes!)
#LMPBC has been really fun and it was neat to get my own book back with all four people‘s notes and thoughts! Yay for #groupR!
4/5 ⭐️- When Abdi‘s best friend Noah is found in a canal, Abdi goes silent. The mystery in this book was well done and it‘s not something I would typically pick up. While there were a lot of characters, the storyline was easy to follow.

What a fantastic book. I can‘t wait to read the first one (although this book can be read as a standalone).
Plot: When Noah (a 15-year-old boy with cancer) falls into a canal and almost dies, did he fall or did his Somali best friend push him? Neither boy is saying. Noah can‘t (he‘s in a coma) and Abdi won‘t say a word. Detective Jim Clemo is in charge of figuring out what happened that night. A well-written mystery/thriller.

Two teenage boys, best friends; one a Somali refugee, the other, financially privileged, but suffering cancer. When the ill child nearly drowns, just the two of them know what happened, and neither is telling. From What She Knew, DI Clemo is going to find out. The mystery is interesting, but the dynamics between the characters and the social and racial tension is what makes this book worth reading.

I loved “What She Knew,” and eagerly anticipated Gilly Macmillan‘s next Book. I didn‘t enjoy this one as much as “What She Knew,” but definitely still recommend it. It features Jim Clemo again, which was a pleasant surprise. Interesting characters and themes, and certainly a page turner.

SarahRotenberry I‘m reading it now and I‘m surprised how much I welcomed DI Clemo back into my life 🙂 7y
Ajessgirl @SarahRotenberry I‘m so curious to hear what you think! 7y
SarahRotenberry I liked it! Clemo was good. I‘m glad there wasn‘t SO much about him though; it was still mostly about the case. I was also impressed with the author‘s research into Somalia and the refugee situation in Bristol. 7y

#groupr @Marmie7 I am terribly sorry but I just mailed today! Also, fun tip, you can send books via media mail. $2 instead of $7.
I liked this book! I can‘t wait to hear what the rest of you think! #LMPBC

Drnkpnkprincess Media mail is the best! The only problem I‘ve encountered is it has to be 100% books, otherwise they (meaning USPS) has been known to peak inside and will “return” the package or make the receiver pay the difference. 😳 maybe they‘ve gotten more lax on those rules but it stinks when you want to add some socks/candy/extras 7y
MrsGreen @Drnkpnkprincess Yes, you are absolutely right. It is for books only. 7y

Mehso-so

Told from alternating perspectives, this story is a slow, tense burn with a deep plot. Macmillan effectively and deftly captures how relentless the press are, especially relevant and relatable in today's climate—whether they print facts, fiction, or a bit of both, people will believe it. While the premise is interesting, the characters can be a bit too stereotypical and because of this, there are times where the story becomes a bit contrived.

Ahh, this was fantastic! I actually think I like this one more than What She Knew, which I loved. I was engaged from page one until the end. The plot moved quickly and was compelling. I‘m a big fan of the detective in this series; I love how he reacts to these huge cases that he works. His emotions feel real and human, and I love that. I appreciate the varying perspectives that these characters bring. I don‘t love them all, but they make me FEEL.
