I received access to this galley from Simon and Schuster Canada in exchange for an honest review. Her Pretty Face is a domestic drama centred around Frances and Kate. They become fast friends when they band together against the other moms at Forrester Academy. But one has a secret about her past that is hard to keep buried. Published on July 10/18, I gave Her Pretty Face 5 stars on Goodreads (link in profile) #HerPrettyFace #Netgalley

Full review on Goodreads if you are interested (link in bio). It was well written but I wasn‘t as captivated by the main character as much as the former police officer and his wife. The changing perspectives was well done though!

No surprise to Ruth Ware fans but this one was amazing. It was complicated and twists and turns. Lots of interesting characters and family history to keep you on your toes. I couldn‘t put it down. It was well done for the genre. I liked the mix of personal history and time period details as it added to the atmosphere. It ended up being a lot of names and dates for me but with a criminal as prolific as he was, it would be hard to write it any other way!

Lisa Genova is one of my favourite authors and her new one does not disappoint. A stark and beautiful tale of a pianist diagnosed with ALS and finds he has no one close to care for him. His ex-wife Karina takes him in and he reconnects with her and his daughter. 5 stars.

Eggs ❤️💜❤️💜 Genova 7y

I decent story and a quick plot, this was a good book. I thought some of the connections made were a little contrived and the lead characters a little naive. Kept me guessing and kept my interest though! Publishes April 30, 2018 #netgalley #ifhewakes

Such a lovely book. Interesting characters, fascinating plot, and thought provoking. Definitely recommend this one!

EJG31 I borrowed it from work but had to return it before I had a chance to read it. It is in high demand so I'll wait patiently till I get it back. Hopefully my tbr pile will have shrunk by then......no, not likely😁 7y

What a good example of a modern “locked room” mystery. I liked the addition of an unreliable narrator as well as a weird assortment of random characters. Glad I picked this one up at the airport for the trip home!

Lovely to read a book about the cold winter while on a beach 😀 I loved the details and the characters in this one, and the addition of a deaf lead character was an interesting take as well. Will certainly recommend this to anyone who like Nordic Noir!

I liked this one though I think I may be the only fan of the series that likes the second one the best. The third book is a lot like the first so if you liked that one, you will most likely enjoy this one. Louisa Clark is a fun character to read about and this book stays true to her character.

Oh man, this was a good book!!! Full review Goodreads but I can see why it‘s so heavily recommended. A really complex story with a mix of the past and the present written in such an easy to follow way. The small town aspect with history stretching decades and long running family drama. I am not sure you could figure out the crime as you go but it made sense as the main character gathered the information. Can not wait for the next one!

Not the worst book ever but it had it‘s issues. I found the plot was easy to figure out and some of the characters just horrible. I did enjoy the setting and how the small town atmosphere added to the mystery. Everybody knew of each other but knew nothing about what happened behind closed doors. The tenth book in the DCI Carol Jordon and Dr Tony Hill series can be read as a standalone or part of the series. I love how she recaps the events from past books that the reader needs to know but without boring those who read them all. Characters that continue to evolve and surprise in believable ways after ten books is rare! Read my 5-star review of Insidious Intent by Val McDermid

Nyt 1919 Book Review | New York Times

I am hoping for help improving my book reviews. What makes a review helpful? What types of things makes you decide if you‘d like the book personally?

CarolynM For me it's what is the book about? Not the story, but what are the themes, what is explored? Plus a some idea of the tone and the style of writing. Hope this is helpful.🙂 7y
Jprglisa Thank you very much! That is helpful. Hopefully you‘ll see an improvement in mine over the year! I appreciate you taking the time to answer 😺 7y
readinginthedark Sometimes I‘ll give a short premise on what the book is about. And then I write about my reaction to it, what appealed most to me, what I didn‘t like, and (if this wasn‘t part of the other points) what is unique or the same about the author‘s writing style or plot decisions. Usually after I work through the specifics of these points, I have a pretty long review. Some people include quotes for emphasis, which works as long as there are no spoilers. (edited) 7y
Jprglisa Thanks @readinginthedark! I sometimes find the synopsis part my least favourite of a review but I might need to work on adding it to some of mine. 7y
readinginthedark Yeah, it‘s not super exciting, but sometimes the editor pitches don‘t work for me and I feel like people need a better idea of what they‘re getting into. I only do this within the first few chapters, of course; you don‘t want to give too much away. Unless it‘s a picture book! 7y

Such a great plot, strong suspense throughout the whole book, and interesting characters!!! It‘s been a while since a book surprised me so much, I had no idea what was coming most of the time. Definitely recommend to fans of Gone Girl or Girl on a Train. The unreliable narrator is hard to pull off but I think it worked really well here!

Not sure how I feel about this now it‘s done. I struggled to get through it. Thinking about it after, a couple characters cut a little close to home and my own struggles. The other characters were so far removed from my own experience that I really couldn‘t relate to them at all.
