The Wildling Sisters
The Wildling Sisters | Eve Chase
39 posts | 31 read | 65 to read
An evocative novel in the vein of Kate Morton and Daphne Du Maurier, in which the thrill of first love clashes with the bonds of sisterhood, and all will be tested by the dark secret at the heart of Applecote Manor. Four sisters. One summer. A lifetime of secrets. When fifteen-year-old Margot and her three sisters arrive at Applecote Manor in June 1959, they expect a quiet English country summer. Instead, they find their aunt and uncle still reeling from the disappearance of their daughter, Audrey, five years before. As the sisters become divided by new tensions when two handsome neighbors drop by, Margot finds herself drawn into the life Audrey left behind. When the summer takes a deadly turn, the girls must unite behind an unthinkable choice or find themselves torn apart forever. Fifty years later, Jesse is desperate to move her family out of their London home, where signs of her widower husbands previous wife are around every corner. Gorgeous Applecote Manor, nestled in the English countryside, seems the perfect solution. But Jesse finds herself increasingly isolated in their new sprawling home, at odds with her fifteen-year-old stepdaughter, and haunted by the strange rumors that surround the manor. Rich with the heat and angst of love both young and old, The Wildling Sisters is a gorgeous and breathtaking journey into the bonds that unite a family and the darkest secrets of the human heart.

Slow moving but compelling story which toggles between the events which take place at Applecote Manor present day and in 1959. The four Wilde sisters return to Applecote to spend the summer, but life there is different since their cousin went missing five years before. In the present, Jessie and her husband buy a crumbling Applecote in an effort to remake their busy lives. Secrets galore.

I was good for so long...until I wasn't. Some books for next year; fingers crossed that we are in our classrooms in September. #covid19buyathon

Clwojick 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻I did the same thing! I got through four months without buying a single book, and then all of a sudden I‘ve purchased 10+ in May and over that in June. 🙈 And were only a week in! Hahaha 5y
TheLudicReader @Clwojick you can only go so long without buying books, right? 5y

I loved Black Rabbit Hall, so I‘m looking forward to this one that looks like it will be totally my jam..... English countryside, hot summers, family secrets and betrayals....
And both the US and UK titles work for today‘s prompt.... I wonder why there are two different titles? 🤔🤷‍♀️

Cinfhen Hmmmmm🤔 6y

Billypar Those differences are so interesting- it's another 'sorcerer's stone'/'philosopher's stone' situation. Vanishings, sorcerery- in the U.S., subtlety isn't our strong suit 😂 6y
Billypar Oh hang on, did I get it backwards? The Vanishing... is the UK title? Now I really don't know what to think 😆 6y

These are what I'm #currentlyreading and the only books that I know for sure for my #marchlineup and #marchtbr. This month I plan on picking books that I feel like reading at the time, instead of a fixed list.

I‘m not really sure what to say about this. For me to give a book 4-5 Stars, it has to make me want to keep picking it up and keep reading. This didn‘t. The story itself was good but maybe a little all over the place. I‘m not sorry I read it but it def won‘t rate high up on my list of reads this year. Solid 3 Stars I guess.

So I have a question, maybe someone here knows. I won an ARC of this book and am just now getting to it. I read it maybe 6 months ago. It appears it was published here in August 2017 but look at the copyright date. Could this just be a typo?

Lola That may be the US pub date. Was it published in the UK or elsewhere in 2017? 7y
Lola I see she is a UK author but the book is available now for order at Amazon US so maybe they bumped up the pub date after that ARC was printed 🤔 Or it‘s just a typo 🙃 Either way, it sounds excellent and now I want to read it 😂 (edited) 7y
Bostonmomx2 @Lola it was pub‘d in the UK under a diff name so ya, I dunno. I‘ve never seen this type of thing before. 7y
megt I don‘t know how it works in trade publishing, but in higher education publishing, the copyright year is always one year ahead of the current calendar year. So books published this year have a 2018 copyright year and starting January 1, 2018 the copyright year flips to 2019. 7y
Bostonmomx2 @megt interesting. I didn‘t know that. Trade pub def isn‘t like that 😉 7y

While I enjoyed Clare Corbett and Emilia Fox's performances (especially teenage Bella), this book was just okay for me. Jessie was annoying for the most part. The would have enjoyed this more if it simply told the story of the Wilde sisters alone.

BethFishReads Awwwww. I liked the double time periods 7y
Leelee.reads I've been thinking about your user name lately since I am around teenagers all day at the high school. And as you probably know, "lit" is what they all throw around to mean "super f'ing amazing." I'm loving the double meaning in your user name! ?? 7y
LitHousewife @Leelee.reads Thank you! It was entirely unintentional. When I picked my Twitter handle it was easier to abbreviate literate than housewife. I've gotten some ribbing from coworkers over the years, so it's nice to know how forward thinking I really was. 😂😂😂 7y

The weather is gorgeous today, so I started this audiobook and took a 4 mile hike. So far it's interesting, but not necessarily great. Early days yet, though. I do enjoy both Clare Corbett and Emilia Fox's narration.

Still slow going in general (my reading, not the story), but marching on! These mornings on our new back deck are seriously helping. The dog that wants to cuddle is not.

Or maybe it's the coffee. Either way👍

Coffee and reading on the deck every morning is absolutely helping me get back to normal. Not quite reading at the speed I'd like to be yet, but definitely back on track. Yay!
The peach cake is from @jpease89 - I took the dogs for their usual morning stroll, randomly bumped into her while she was working and she whipped this out of her bag for me. 😍

TrishB Never get cake randomly handed to me whilst out walking 😀 7y

I'm exhausted. It's been such an emotional few months, and I can't quite get back into my normal reading routine. When does it go back to normal?
Thankfully (I think), September is jam packed with weddings, so I'm hoping that will either distract me or kick my ass back into normalcy ... fingers crossed. Until then, even if I'm quiet on here, I'm still thinking of my Litten friends ❤️

LauraBeth I'm so sorry for your tough road. And there's nothing that I can say that would ease your heartache - but just wanted you to know that your Litsy family cares and are here ❤️❤️ 7y

Only able to get Theo paused for #internationalcatday. #catsoflitsy [absent: Dexter Harper] Have to say I really, really like Eve Chase. The first two pages drew me right in and just when I thought the story was moving in a predictable manner it took a turn. It wasn't like The Big Twist a lot of authors keep trying to pull off. It was smooth and quiet and just well done. Nice follow up to Black Rabbit Hall, look forward to her next one. 🤞👍😊

This book has a gothic feel and follows two different families at two different time periods at the same rural estate. An enjoyable read, with good characters and enough mystery to spur the plot along.

This book had a Rebecca-esque mystery. You can tell there is something more under the surface. Every character has a secret. It is those secrets that keep the story going and it is the unraveling of those secrets that ties up the ending. The book was a bit of a slow burn but totally worth the build up. #2017christyread #firsttoread #sisterdrama

"We'd all be destroyed if we could remember everything." The Wilding Sisters is a powerful novel examining the powerful impact of love and loss. Told through the eyes of Margot and Jessie, two women separated by decades but united by more than they realize. This is a beautiful novel about sisters and mothers, and how secrets can both destroy us and unite us. Full review on my blog, link in my bio ??‍????‍? #firsttoread #bookstagram
