And the Rest Is History
And the Rest Is History | Jodi Taylor
32 posts | 31 read | 11 to read
No one knows quite how, but Max and her baby are safe at last. No one knows quite how, but Peterson has persuaded Dr Foster to marry him. No one knows quite how, but Markham's marital status remains unknown. Certainly no one knows quite how a twelve-foot-high teapot has mysteriously materialised on the South Lawn, but it has. But they do know that Clive Ronan is back. They do know that he hates them and that this time he has good cause. And they do know that he will bring death and destruction in his wake. Follow the disaster magnets of St Mary's from the Egyptian desert to the Battle of Stamford Bridge, and from Hastings to the Sack of Constantinople in this, the eighth book in The Chronicles of St Mary's.

I enjoyed this like most St. Mary's books but it was very much telenovella levels of drama for Max et al. Like I know this are OTT and silly but also there was a lot of bad things happening to good people and it kind of was a downer. Very much not the most optimistic episode in the series.

julesG Not one of my favourites either. 6mo

Apparently 5 years ago I highlighted and photographed this quote! I sill adore this world but have got a little lost. Debating whether to re read or just dive in and try

tokorowilliamwallace Yeah, in the current dystopic sci-fi techno-thriller I'm reading the director of the entire program had his secondhand woman manager genetically-designed at birth but this meant she was barren, and she definitely felt that hole in her life. Lots of themes that you can progress technologically and societally supposedly, but you can't take the human nature out, especially the desire to dominate. Patriarchy still reared its ugly head. 3y

First book of the new year is finished! This one was darker than her usual rollicking style but still entertaining.

4-10-21: My 36th finished book of 2021! Book 8 in the series finds Max and her family going through some very hard times. While St. Mary‘s gets through all its time travel intact for once, Max has to face some major hardships. As usual, there is a lot of jumping around the time line, humor, and fascinating historical moments. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👍🏼📖#️⃣3️⃣6️⃣ #andtherestishistory #joditaylor

#BookReport and #WeeklyForecast! Some planned reading got derailed this week when I got a 7-day skip-the-line loan of Caste, my BLM book group‘s pick for February. That expires tomorrow & I‘m only halfway, so it‘ll stay in progress till my regular hold comes in. But I finished two, started Angel of the Crows, and continued to love re-reading Windy Poplars for #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead. Hoping to make a bigger dent in the library pile this week!

Probably the darkest of the series, Max and everyone at St. Mary's take some massive hits in this entry. Heartwrenching and devastating for those of us who've been faithful fans since the beginning. The team does manage to jet about the timeline and take in some impressive moments from the Battle of Hastings to the sack of Constantinople in the 12th. Oh...and did I mention there's a time-travelling teapot? So it's not completely doom and gloom.

DGRachel I almost dropped the series after this one and was so traumatized by some of the events that it took me more than a year after publication to pick up the 9th book. 4y
ralexist @DGRachel - I've heard a lot of similar thoughts to yours. I couldn't believe it either and I don't know that I've even been entirely satisfied with how that got resolved but as a reader I haven't learned how to change a books outcome yet 🙂 (edited) 4y
DGRachel The good news is that I enjoyed the next book a lot more. 🤣🤣 4y

Read books 1-7 many moons ago. I hope Ms. Taylor features countries besides Europe in the next 8.

I'll have to finish The Crow Trap tomorrow. But I'm quite pleased with my July reads. Finished both #chroniclesofstmarys and #great2019parasolversereadalong. Found my new Favorite book Red, White, and Royal Blue and actually had a couple of serious reads.

3.5 stars.

I love this series and watching the adventures of Max and the crew of St. Mary's. I usually enjoy the time traveling aspect where the historians go to a certain place in history to document and observe. But in this adventure, the history didn't grab me. But, what really propelled this one, was situation with Max and her family. It was a bit heartbreaking and I'm looking forward to see how things shake out in the future.

Yesterday I said goodbye to my best #readingbuddy. She lived and died by her own rules, not saying goodbye until she was ready to go. Today is Day 1 of moving on, and reading has never been harder. Goodnight my wild child, I‘ll miss you. If death is but the next great adventure, I hope yours is an amazing one.

While there are some serious heartbreaking moments there are thankfully the classic St. Mary‘s shenanigans to lighten the mood. I have enjoyed this series with the humor and history.

Beckys_Books Thus is the eighth one! I've only finished two of the audiobooks. That's a long ways to go. 7y
dsfisher And there are the short stories 7y
KimHM I‘m intrigued. Would you call this straight fantasy or is there a mystery element or . . . ? 7y
dsfisher @KimHM Fantasy with historical events. 7y

Oh em gee. I just finished this - and it had some hard, sad stuff, and then the CLIFFHANGIEST ending ever. So I went to immediately buy the next book in the series, and THERE IS NO NEXT BOOK YET. 😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩

DGRachel Yep. This one crushed me. She gets one more book. If it‘s as emotionally rough, I will quit the series. I felt this one lacked the humor and joy that got me through dark spots in earlier books. 7y
Bklover Cliffhangiest! I love it - Great word👍😂😂 7y
Schlinkles Is there going to be another...for some reason I thought this was it. 7y

Schlinkles Strike that. Goodreads says another is coming...in April. 7y
howjessicareads @DGRachel -yes! The humor usually outweighs the sad parts, but this time felt the other way around to me. :( 7y

I don't want y'all to get the wrong idea, but this book keeps making my eyes leak. I don't know how she's going to right this but I trust her. I totally trust Jodi Taylor even when she makes my eyes leak. 💗💁🏻💐😭😍

Audrey Aargh. I'm waiting so patiently for book 7 to be released/purchased by the library. ❤️this series. 8y

Not my favorite. I'll probably read the next one, if there is another, but I'm not happy with this one and could easily walk away from the series. Too much melodrama and not enough of the fun elements I've come to expect.

LauraBrook Bummer! 😕 8y
DGRachel @LauraBrook Don't let my review influence you. I'm apparently in the minority on a Goodreads. The reviews there are glowing. Did I read the same book?? 😢 8y
