George and Lizzie
George and Lizzie: A Novel | Nancy Pearl
From Americas librarian and NPR books commentator Nancy Pearl comes an emotionally riveting debut novel about an unlikely marriage at a crossroads. George and Lizzie have radically different understandings of what love and marriage should be. George grew up in a warm and loving familyhis father an orthodontist, his mother a stay-at-home momwhile Lizzie grew up as the only child of two famous psychologists, who viewed her more as an in-house experiment than a child to love. Over the course of their marriage, nothing has changedGeorge is happy; Lizzie remainsunfulfilled. When a shameful secret from Lizzies past resurfaces, shell need to face her fears in order to accept the true nature of the relationship she and George have built over a decade together. With pitch-perfect prose and compassion and humor to spare, George and Lizzie is an intimate story of new and past loves, the scars of childhood, and an imperfect marriage at its defining moments.

George was a McDreamy, and Lizzie was something shy of a nightmare. I should have been done with her since George deserved better. But something about Lizzie intrigued me, and I wanted her to understand the love in her life. The audio was available so I experienced both audio and print. It gave me Ann Patchett vibes, and I‘m not sure if it was the writing or the author‘s own narration of the story.

I thought of the perfect image for this, a Jules Feiffer cartoon which ends with a man saying “I love you Dorothy!“ and her thinking, “What terribly poor judgement.“ Alas, I cannot find it.

This is a much rougher read than you'd expect, light in tone but serious in topic. I almost DNF'd but am glad I didn't, because I actually related quite a bit to depressed, pessimistic Lizzie, who's married to a kind, generous optimist.

willaful (My husband and I are a grumpy/sunshine relationship and he's sunshine.) I thought it ended too abruptly and I'd really like to know that George got what he wanted and deserved in the end. But it was an intriguing and thoughtful portrayal. 1y

Being short and plump, I can relate to this. Instead I'm quirky though and a little contrary.

BethM I think quirky and contrary is better. 4y

What a perfectly foggy day to walk to work. ☺️

Listening to the tagged audiobook, and finding that I mildly hate the main character Lizzie. 🤷🏻‍♀️

alisiakae I need a foggy day! It's been in the high 90's, and they had to drain our neighborhood swimming pool because they found broken glass in it. 😩It won't open again for days. 5y
Clwojick @4thhouseontheleft I feel you! I‘ve been walking to and from work, and it‘s been so sticky and muggy out. I normally have to hop in a cold shower multiple times a day just so I don‘t feel gross. 5y

This one was up and down for me. Lizzie was hard to like and George was a peach so that made it even harder. Overall, I liked the arc of the story and the ending was strong. #MountTBR

This one was halfway between “pick” and “so-so.” Billed as an examination of a marriage, but it‘s more of a study of Lizzie herself. I didn‘t dislike it; I didn‘t even dislike Lizzie, though I‘ve seen that sentiment in many other reviews. She frustrated me, but I also felt for her. Ultimately, I enjoyed the way this prompted me to think about what makes people tick—what influences our relationships & motivations & inability to let go of the past.

My planned February reading has somewhat spiraled out of control...mainly because I can‘t seem to restrain myself from checking out library books. I now have seven in-progress reads...😬 Pictured above: on the left—library book club pick, started today at lunch, and on the right—my poetry pick for February, which I‘m slowly making my way through. Not pictured: the stack of four unread library books sitting at home...

#rightnexttotherightone . . . or the wrong one. George and Lizzie have been married for a few years, and nothing much has changed. George is still blissfully happy. Lizzie, however, has not. She‘s not sure why, but she feels unfulfilled. This is a look at a marriage during its “defining moments” and there isn‘t much I love more than a book about marriage! I‘ve not read this one but somehow it ended up on my TBR. 🤷🏼‍♀️

This book was a “so-so” right up until the last few pages. It definitely has its faults (like, what does the great game really have to don with the rest of the story at all). But I actually found myself relating to Lizzie in a lot of ways and I was glad that the story ended the way that it did.

Half an hour ago I told @BookishMarginalia not to read this one. The character of Lizzie is stunted and unfair to her devoted husband George. I told her that I would finish it because it was Nancy Pearl. Boy am I glad I did. The very last scene makes it worthwhile. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Nancy Pearl (author of "Book Lust") is speaking at a library near me, and I can't go. ? But maybe some of you in the Northern Virginia area can. She'll be talking about her debut novel, George & Lizzie. It's Thursday, Oct. 12, 7:00-8:00 pm, at the Gum Spring Library in Stone Ridge, VA, part of the Loudon County Public Library system.

I don't know what I was expecting from Nancy Pearl's first book, but it certainly wasn't an opening scene with a character so inebriated she can't stand, who decided to have sex with half the football team as a 'game'. Perhaps trying to be clever, the writing was awkward and clunky when it could have been straightforward.

Centique 😨😨 Youch. I would‘ve bailed too. 7y

I'm pleased to report that my librarian hero can, in fact, write a good novel. The characterizations are somewhat problematic (unsympathetic, unreliable female character, mostly due to probable mental illness and definite child abuse, and the always-forgiving, "perfect" husband), but overall this was highly enjoyable. Really wish we could start writing about sexually promiscuous women who didn't regret it, though. But an enjoyable read.

Happy Book Birthday to #GeorgeAndLizzie by Nancy Pearl! This character-driven novel pushes & pulls at the bonds of marriage & love, often with sharp humor & wit. I was lucky enough to read an early draft (when it was still in Microsoft Word format). I loved it a great deal even then, & I can't wait to re-read it in it's final form. Congratulations, Nancy, on your debut novel! @TouchstoneBooks #booklove #contemporaryfiction #NancyPearl #debutnovel

Look, if anyone but Nancy had written it I don't believe it would have been published. Too much telling instead of showing, characters who don't seem quite realistic, and I wasn't drawn in. Sorry America's librarian.

This slice of (a crazy) life drama by Nancy Pearl explores family, empathy, friendship, coming of age, and overcoming the past. George & Lizzie is a slow-paced novel that focuses on rich detail setting and complicated characters. Fans of domestic fiction will enjoy this messy, charming, and edgy story of a woman coming to terms with her life choices.
