Violin | Anne Rice
14 posts | 50 read | 13 to read
Anne Rice's Violin tells the story of two charismatic figures bound to each other by a passionate commitment to music as a means of rapture, seduction, and liberation. At the novel's center: a uniquely fascinating woman, Triana, and the demonic fiddler Stefan, a tormented ghost who begins to prey upon her, using his magic violin to draw her into a state of madness. But Triana sets out to resist Stefan, and the struggle thrusts them both into a terrifying supernatural realm. Violin flows abundant with the history, the drama, and the romantic intensity that have become synonymous with Anne Rice at her incomparable best. Anne Rice is the author of eighteen books. She lives in New Orleans. Also available as a Random House AudioBook From the Trade Paperback edition.

What a book! I haven‘t read Anne Rice in a very long time. Her descriptions of the cities and towns her story takes place in are in point. Such a poet! And who doesn‘t love a good ghost story? This book was published in 1997, what have I been waiting for? Anna is the reason that I had to visit New Orleans and walk thru the Garden District. I saw one of her homes. Now I feel I have to see Rio. Her stories pull me to the locations she writes about.

Roamed the stacks of my local library‘s book sale. Know absolutely nothing about this book but captivated by the cover. Reminds me of a Pierre-Auguste Cot painting. #coverlove

At Violin's center: a uniquely fascinating woman, Triana - who once dreamed of becoming a great musician - and the demonic fiddler Stefan, tormented ghost of a Russian aristocrat, who begins to prey upon her, using his magic violin first to enchant, then to dominate and draw her into a state of madness through the music she loves. But Triana understands the power of the music and she sets out to resist Stefan, to fight for her sanity and her life.

Okay I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW I‘ve only been reading this for 2 ish hours but I know I‘m not going to get through this. Chapter 3 was just a whole bunch of symbolism and metaphors about snuggling with dead loved ones which could be seen as sweet if the main character wasn‘t legit snuggling a corpse in the first couple chapters. It‘s not even that it‘s weird it‘s just the writing. It‘s just symbolism about symbolism about metaphors. Not for me.

magyklyXdelish @TheAromaofBooks this was double spin 4y
Yuki_Onna That was fast! 😂 Jep, it seems you either love Anne Rice's writing or you hate it. (I'm still not sure what side I belong to)... 4y
magyklyXdelish @Yuki_Onna I knooooow. I feel bad but it‘s so boring and completely going over my head I need something to keep me awake! However I know what to read if I‘m ever having trouble going to bed in the future 😬🙊 4y
TheAromaofBooks Yeeeeah that sounds a little too far!! 4y
Yuki_Onna Ouch, that sounds baaad... 😂 Lit to put you to sleep ☠ 😆 Hope your next read will be much better! 4y

Here‘s my #DoubleSpin — I‘ve heard a lot of negative things about this one so hopefully for my first Anne Rice it‘s not too bad 🤞🏼 either way I‘ll be excited to finally knock this one off my shelf

UPDATE: definitely abandoned this one. It was interesting for the first ten pages, but I quickly lost interest. Definitely different from the other Anne Rice novels.

Starting another book for Spooktober!
It's been a hot minute since I've read any Anne Rice (anyone else have a vampire phase in high school?), but I'm excited to read this story, especially because it's a story encapsulated in classical music! Woohoo!

As much as I would typically enjoy anything written by Anne Rice, I think this work was really frustrating and long-winded to read. I kept trying to pick it back up for years, but her damn symbolisms and symbolisms of symbolisms and is he a ghost or a rockstar or a figment of the main character‘s imagination or am I now going insane?!? It wasn‘t to my taste, so I bailed. ☹️

wanderlustforwords I've still to read Anne Rice. 7y
CarlyQuinn @wanderlustforwords I would recommend her interview with the vampire series hands down. 7y
KathyWheeler @CarlyQuinn I would too except for Memnoch the Devil — I hated that book. 7y

Andrea4 Ha, this has been on my shelf for years! Now I know not to bother- The last ones of hers I read were Taltos (made me disgusted) and Pandora (I enjoyed for like a light read). I used to be really into her but I think I just grew out of her, if that's possible. 7y
DGRachel I haven‘t read anything of hers in decades. Cry to Heaven is my favorite of her novels, though. I‘m sure I read Violin, but I can‘t remember a darn thing about it. 😮 7y
OrangeMooseReads I didn‘t love this one. 7y
Velvetfur Hmmm, I used to be obsessed with her work but the last few of hers that I read didn't grab me like the earlier ones did. I think I've read Violin but I can't remember! Funny, I was thinking about her just the other day and wondering how many books of hers I might have missed in the years since I've read anything by her! 7y
CarlyQuinn @Velvetfur she has had a lot of ups and downs. She was at one time a born again Christian. Not sure if she still is and if it had to do with the writing of this, but when this was happening, she denounced her vampire series, which was very disappointing to me. 7y
Velvetfur @CarlyQuinn Oh wow, I didn't know about that! I must do some research at some point, thanks for the update! 7y

It took me a long while to get to finish this book. Honestly, this book is not my cup of tea. That said, it's beautifully written, has a strong narrative and made me obsessed with Beethoven.

I've sorta finalised my TBR #readathon picks. Sophie my 7 year old is getting into it too, with some DrSeuss and Roald Dahl. I've just added an Anne Rice that I've been meaning to read. First I have to start off with Find Her as I've around 40 pages left 📚📚👍🏼📚 snacks in form of coffee and chocolate, Its 1pm in Ireland 👍🏼goodluck and have fun 📚❤️

WOCreads How great you're readathoning together!😃 Have a great time! 8y

DeborahSmall She's driving me crazy 🙃😝 reading Matilda out loud beside me, and I'm thinking it would be cute if I wasn't trying to enjoy reading myself 😩!! Thankfully she's having a sleepover with her cousin tonight 😊😉 8y
LeahBergen Awww!! 8y
acorter Haha, my wife and I have been taking turns on who is reading and who is dealing with the yelling children. :) 8y
DeborahSmall Good idea @acorter my husband just started a video chat with work in Iceland. I just want everyone to leave the house. The sunroom is too cold to read in otherwise I'd lock myself in 8y
shemah What a cutie she is!! Btw, we have similar TBR picks. I've just finished reading The Night Circus today.. read The Room coupla months back, Burial Rites last month and now reading Gaiman's American Gods. All wonderful reads!! 8y
DeborahSmall @shemah I've been meaning to read The Night Circus for so long. My eldest just took American Gods from my pile, I'd been hiding it. He's a huge Neil Gaiman fan but studying his A levels or should be. Told him to try and get few hours reading done today. I'll get few of these read by tomorrow and sticking to this TBR, my other all crime/thrillers. I read Americanah last week and enjoyed genre change. Looking forward to see how you do with AGs 8y

Which one do I read? I saw a lot of people talking about Anne Rice, but I love Sir Walter Scott's prose and poetry. #thetalisman #violin?

quirkyreader Do book polygamy and read then both at the same time. 8y
Luani Violin is really sad, if you're not in the mood of that kind of book, I recommend you read it later. 8y
