This was interesting from the historical perspective, but not my favorite. The conclusion part seemed like overkill. I had gathered all of that information from the previous sections. This one will be on its way to you @CatLass007 #whodunitthesequel

CatLass007 @Schlinkles Thanks for the alert. 6y
Heatherfeather How did you get this graphic to fit in the litsy square screen? 6y
Schlinkles @Heatherfeather When I save it, I save it in the square format and it fits perfectly. 6y

Such a Victorian mystery! Despite having a bit of a plodding narrative at times, this book was still definitely worth reading for the historical context of the development of the mystery story. And who can resist mesmerism?!

ScientistSam @Schlinkles sorry if you already posted - the holidays were crazy! Just want to make sure you got this? 6y

This book is different. It is the account (made up of letters, depositions, etc.) of an English insurance investigator presenting a case for fraud and murder. My biggest peeve is wading through the dense and often repetitive language (it WAS written in the 1860s). It‘s widely held as the first detective novel, and I did find it fascinating in its mechanics. Cold-blooded and sly. 3.5/5⭐️ but probably not a true pick.
#whodunitthesequel

RaimeyGallant I'm curious. 6y
robinb @RaimeyGallant Haha, I‘ve lured you in! 🤣 I know my review is a bit ambiguous, but honestly this book was a hard one to pin down for me. There were things I liked about it (the methods & tenacity of the insurance investigator) and some I didn‘t (the language slowed me down and some of its repetitiveness was annoying). I WAS happy that it was a shorter book (170+ pgs). 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 6y

Up next is my #whodunitthesequel book for the month.

It appeared from the outside to be a shorter, therefore quicker read...until I opened it and found the way it‘s written is going to slow me down considerably. 🤪😜🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🐢🐢🐢 Uh yeah, I mean even slower than I usually am. 🤣🤣🤣

As per usual I forgot to take a picture of the book before I sent it off to @robinb. I was very much of two minds while reading this. I really liked learning more about the history of the mystery genre and how The Notting Hill Mystery fits into that, but...was it a mystery?? I didn't find the story's progression very satisfying since we know whodunit from almost the beginning. I loved the laying out of evidence, though.

4⭐️ The first “detective fiction” novel is so unique. I was struck by the novel concepts for the time period. Twins linked with a physical/mental connection, mesmerism, inheritance conspiracy, murder most foul, and what conclusion do you, dear reader, draw from the case outlined for you via letters, journal entries, and recorded witness testimony? Just brilliantly done. I can only imagine the suspense it created when serialized. 🔎

Jess_Read_This @ReadOrDieRachel @kspenmoll @rohit-sawant Thank you so much the the kind words on my review! I appreciate it. 💕 7y
Jess_Read_This @jillrhudy I have a small collection of them and this book is motivating me to read them! Any specific ones you recommend? 7y
Jess_Read_This @lisakoby I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! 7y
jillrhudy I like Mavis Hay and I would gobble up the railway stories. I have a HUGE jones for British women writers between 1930 and 1960. Maybe you do too! Are you one of the Virago lovers amongst us? Anyway I want them all!!! https://poisonedpenpress.com/series/british-library-crime-classics/ 7y
kspenmoll I only have one, but bought it for time period & cover at Indie bookstore. (edited) 7y
Jess_Read_This @jillrhudy Yes to being a Virago lover!! I‘m definitely getting into that time period for British women writers! I have quite a few of their hardcovers, the classic green ones, and some of the newer prints with the apple on the spine. I didn‘t know there were more Virago lovers here! 💕 I just bought “Murder Underground” by Hay recently! 7y
Jess_Read_This @kspenmoll Lol!! I just wrote in my comment I recently bought that one! I haven‘t read it yet. Let me know if you ever want to buddy read 7y
jillrhudy I‘ve read Murder Underground and it was pretty good. Very period (some would say dated, but they aren‘t in love with the period in question). 7y
bookwrm526 @Jess_Read_This I haven‘t gotten another book from the person before me since I sent you Silent Lies. I have reached out to her both on Litsy and via email to let her know, but I haven‘t heard back :( 6y

🍺🔎When embarking on a novel that predates Wilkie Collins‘ The Moonstone in detective fiction, actually this is touted as the “first detective fiction novel” (1862-1863 serialized); one ought to indulge in a plowman‘s platter lunch and dig in. This book is totally my jam in that the tale is told in a complete epistolary format. ✉️📖

A most excellent selection for this month‘s #WhodunitTheSequel book! I was excited for this #bookmail.

catebutler These BLCC editions are some of my absolute favourites! This title sounds excellent. Will have to add it to my list! 7y
hlgreenfield Oh wow it predates Wilkie Collins? I read his novels assuming I was reading the beginning of whodunnits! 7y
Jess_Read_This @catebutler I adore BLCC books and have started a small collection. This one is so original in style and format. A murder, missing twin stolen by gypsies, mesmerism, and potential poisoning all before the third section. It‘s great! 7y

Jess_Read_This @hlgreenfield I was surprised too! The intro says this was serialized in a publication called Once a Week from Nov 29, 1862 thru January 17, 1863. The grandfather of Daphne du Maurier illustrated it! Per the intro of the book, Moonstone was published in 1868. I was surprised to learn all this. 7y
rubyslippersreads This sounds great, and I ❤️ the cover. 😍 7y
hlgreenfield Wow that is super interesting! I'll need to check it out! 7y
LeahBergen You had me at “epistolary”. 👍🏻 7y
robinb Looking forward to this one! 7y
batsy Intrigued that it predates The Moonstone! Stacked. 7y
erzascarletbookgasm I love the cover arts on these BLCC books! Detective fiction novel? Predates W Collins? Epistolary? Stacking! 7y
epsitawithane Noted. Looking forward to include it in the next haul.👍 7y
Jess_Read_This @catebutler @hlgreenfield @rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen @readinginthedark @robinb @batsy @erzascarletbookgasm @rhea_reads11 I finished today and it was great. The entire time I was reading I kept picturing the original readers eagerly reading the serial and speculating on what was happening to each other. It wasn‘t a technical or deep mystery; yet so fantastic and out there as a story. I want to chat on the ending if any of you read this! 7y
catebutler @Jess_Read_This I just ordered a copy! Once it arrives, I think I‘ll pick it up, and then love to discuss with you. 😊 7y
ferskner I'm so jealous of your Ploughman's! Book and food pairings are the greatest 7y

epsitawithane Sure. I'd love to. @Jess_Read_This 7y

This one was interesting in a historical sense, but I couldn‘t shake similarities to The Woman in White, and I wasn‘t in the right headspace for the language. It was enjoyable though, so thanks for picking it for #whodunitthesequel! @Jess_Read_This it is headed your way and the post office said it should be there by Tuesday

Jess_Read_This Whoohoo!! Thanks for letting me know! 7y
bookwrm526 @Jess_Read_This I‘ve completely lost track of the actual mailing schedule - I mailed the first two too early and I‘m pretty sure this one is late, sorry :( 7y

Finished this for #whodunitthesequel . @Tiffy_Reads , it is on its way to you.

I‘m glad I read this, but I‘m giving it a so-so. Without going into too many elements, I enjoyed seeing the early development of the mystery. Mystery lovers should check this out, if simply for reading the earliest detective novel.

Can‘t wait what others in the group say about this!

TricksyTails 😻😻 I'm trying to get through my #whodunitthesequel pick and worried I didn't choose wisely. 🙀 I hope it turns out to be good. 7y

TricksyTails @Librarybelle True! So far I'm not loving the book, so feeling a little bad about my pick. At least it will be an easy read. 😐 7y
