So Brilliantly Clever
So Brilliantly Clever: Parker, Hulme and the Murder That Shocked the World | Peter Graham
The brutal, premeditated murder of Honorah Parker in 1954 in a lonely park by her 16-year-old daughter Pauline and Pauline's 15-year-old friend Juliet Hulme made shock headlines around the world. International media flocked to New Zealand to follow the trial. Still today, the murder remains one of the most interesting criminal cases of all time, and a source of intense public fascination throughout the world - especially since one of the murderers was revealed to be the murder-mystery writer Anne Perry, whose books sell in the millions. Lawyer and true crime writer Peter Graham writes of the secrets and lies that permeated the girls' families, the bizarre lead-up to the murder, the girls' conviction and imprisonment, and their lives following their release. He also examines Parker's and Hulme's actions in the light of modern psychology. In the 1950s the two girls were suspected of lesbianism, and judged and imprisoned as inherently evil. Would this happen today?

It's chilly out, so we got chili in the crock pot, LO is dressed as Tinkerbell, and the cat is in my lap... Time for some reading and cider!!! I'm currently working on an e-version of the tagged book

Nope, nope, nope. I got to page 34 before I had to call it quits. The writing seemed too simplistic IMO. It was confusing and lacked the detail I wanted in a ‘true crime‘ novel. And for some reason I had the most trouble I‘d ever had in keeping people straight. If I have to look up names (because some keep changing), it‘s too much work. I have better luck with a novel about 17th century royalty... and they almost all had the same name!

#Anglophile #badgirls

I saw the movie first , which led me to read several books about this true story. Anne Perry, the mystery writer, is one of the girls implicated. Fascinating, these girls plot to kill one of the girls mother. Worth watching and reading.

Reviewsbylola This is on my TBR! 6y

Pickpick

I met Ann Perry in 2007 at the conference in Vancouver described in this book (pg. 289) The writing describes well the known events of the murder in which Ann Perry was implicated. It suffers, though, from a lack of first-hand knowledge due to lost or destroyed documentation, and death of some who held valuable insight. Portions were repetitive. Discussion of the psychology of the perpetrators of the deed was in terms some might not understand,

#DoesYourMotherKnow that you and your best friend are plotting to murder her?

This is a fascinating nonfiction look at a (previously hidden) part of mystery author Anne Perry‘s past and at the murder that inspired the film, Heavenly Creatures.

On June 22, 1954, Juliet and Pauline went for a walk in a park with Pauline‘s mom Honora. Half an hour later, the girls returned home alone while Honora lay, savagely murdered in a sea of blood on the track. With Juliet and Pauline quickly arrested, the story made headlines around the world.

This book offers an account of the crime and ensuing trial, and shares revelations about the fates of Juliet and Pauline after their release from prison.

Librarybelle @Julsmarshall When you have an opportunity, check this out. That was my initial reaction too. 7y
rubyslippersreads I've been wanting to read this, since I like the movie "Heavenly Creatures." 7y
CoverToCoverGirl I have been aware of this Ripley‘s Believe It Or Not Fact for a few years but I remember being completely flummoxed by it and thinking how utterly ironic! 😳😳👀 7y
Librarybelle @rubyslippersreads It‘s a nice comparison, to see how closely the movie parallels facts (and it sounds like it depends upon who you talk to with some of the movie portrayals). 7y
Librarybelle @CoverToCoverGirl The advice of “write what you know” was followed by her perfectly! 7y
LeahBergen It‘s a fascinating read! 7y
Librarybelle @LeahBergen Agreed! When people are discovering her secret, this is the book I recommend. I actually just brought it up with some of my staff this week. 7y
