Evidence of Love
Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs | John Bloom, Jim Atkinson
15 posts | 19 read | 31 to read
Edgar Award Finalist: The sensational true story of two desperate housewives and the killing that shocked a Texas community (Los Angeles Times Book Review). Candy Montgomery and Betty Gore had a lot in common: They sang together in the Methodist church choir, their daughters were best friends, and their husbands had good jobs working for technology companies in the north Dallas suburbs known as Silicon Prairie. But beneath the placid surface of their seemingly perfect lives, both women simmered with unspoken frustrations and unanswered desires. On a hot summer day in 1980, the secret passions and jealousies that linked Candy and Betty exploded into murderous rage. What happened next is usually the stuff of fiction. But the bizarre and terrible act of violence that occurred in Bettys utility room that morning was all too real. Based on exclusive interviews with the Gore and Montgomery families, Evidence of Love is the superbly written account of a gruesome tragedy and the trial that made national headlines when the defendant entered the most unexpected of pleas: not guilty by reason of self-defense (Fort Worth Star-Telegram). Adapted into the Emmy and Golden Globe Awardwinning television movie A Killing in a Small Town, this chilling tale of sin and savagery will fascinate true crime aficionados (Kirkus Reviews).

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely loved this true crime book about the Candy Montgomery/Betty Gore murder case from the early 80s. John Bloom (aka Joe Bob Briggs) and Atkinson did a very good job going through the events of that day and right after and the women‘s backstory. Recommend for true crime lovers.

jlhammar Yes! Such a good one. I have yet to decide if I'm going to try one (or both) of the new adaptations - Candy (Hulu) and the forthcoming Love & Death (HBO). 2y
mollyrotondo @jlhammar I watched a little bit of Candy on Hulu but need to go back to it. It was before I read the book so I didn‘t want to spoil the read by watching the show haha but I didn‘t know HBO had a show coming out too. 2y

True crime #bookmail! I‘ve been wanting to read Evidence of Love for ages. With two new adaptations coming, Candy (Hulu) and Love and Death (HBO Max), now seemed like the time to go for it. Two Truths and a Lie is a 2022 Edgar Award finalist in the Best Fact Crime category. Sounds really good.

LeahBergen Evidence of Love is fascinating! I‘m off to check out your other pictured book now. 😊 3y

A housewife against housewife ax murder! in Texas. The book was okay, a bit boring. The narrator had quite a droning voice at times too. WAY too much emphasis on the 80s views of women and motherhood, so it certainly dated itself. Though I was glad the jury came up with the verdict it did.

Attention true crime fans: this is a book for you. It‘s a crime I hadn‘t heard of, didn‘t know the ending, and was completely surprised by so I don‘t want to give away any spoilers! I picked this up because it is being developed into an HBO Max series and will star Elizabeth Olsen. The events took place in the late 70s and 1980, so pretty dated but made it that much more compelling, for me. Kept me guessing about what really happened until the end

LeahBergen It‘s great, isn‘t it?? 4y

A little true crime and red wine. 😁

In 1987, a girl I had just met in my first few weeks of college loaned this book to me. Flash forward to 2020 and we are still best friends.

I think it‘s time for a reread. ❤️

Thanks to @Reviewsbylola I starting reading this two days ago and I have done little else but read this book since then. For #truecrime fans, this is a story of church going couples in Texas in the 80‘s that get tangled up in an affair that ends in an ax murder. It is well written, concise, and to the point without too many legal details but lots of dialogue.

IamIamIam Wow, that escalated quickly!!! Lol 5y
Suet624 @IamIamIam 😂 😂 😂 Sure did! 5y
Crazeedi I love when a book has me entranced and I can hardly do anything else! My hubby doesnt seem to agree! 😉❤ 5y

Mdargusch It is a crazy story @IamIamIam @Suet624 The murderer actually left the vacation bible school where she was volunteering to do the deed. 😲 5y
Suet624 Oh for God‘s sake! Of course she did. 5y
Mdargusch For some reason true crime usually does that to me @Crazeedi Fortunately, my husband was out of town, so I could read for hours. 😆 5y

If you‘re into true crime, this is a good one! It‘s 1980 and a suburban housewife is hacked to death in her own home in broad daylight. Investigators realize early on that the perp was someone she knew. But who would commit such a brutal crime and why? The author did an excellent job of weaving this story so that it reads like fiction.

And how cool are the vintage covers!? #truecrime

DrexEdit I'm not a huge true crime fan but I read this book because it was by John Bloom who is also Joe Bob Briggs, the drive-in movie critic. This is an excellent book and very cool vintage covers. The book is not easy to find anymore. I'm sure this book has weathered the years better than the Joe Bob books have though. 5y
Reviewsbylola I actually read this one because I saw it offered on kindle unlimited. Def worth it for those that subscribe. If I were going to buy it, I would have to seek out the vintage covers. I‘m sure you‘re right—they can‘t be easy to find! @DrexEdit 5y

Everyone has left the lake house except me and the kids. 😭 The loneliness is real. However my kids are happy to be seeing Toy Story 4 for the second time right now. No matter how good @Mdargusch says it is, I‘m not a movie person. I brought my kindle. 😆 Am I the only one that does that?

TrishB I‘m not a film person either! Generally feels like wasted reading time. 5y

I'm all about #truecrime right now and I just finished this one. Full of salacious small town gossip and intrigue, you can practically hear the church ladies burning up the phone lines. Sex, crime, and murder abound. While it certainly doesn't deserve a Nobel for great literature, it's easy to see why Lifetime made a movie. Quick, entertaining read. And the kicker? The murderess is still alive and is now a therapist here in Georgia! 😱

LeahBergen My best friend and I bonded over the reading of this book in the ‘80s (the one on the right)! 😂 7y
