Museum of Extraordinary Things
Museum of Extraordinary Things | Alice Hoffman
The spellbinding (People, 4 stars), New York Times bestseller from the author of The Dovekeepers an extraordinary novel about an electric and impassioned love affair an enchanting love story rich with history and a sense of place (USA TODAY). Coralie Sardie is the daughter of the sinister impresario behind The Museum of Extraordinary Things, a Coney Island freak show that thrills the masses. An exceptional swimmer, Coralie appears as the Mermaid in her father s museum, alongside performers like the Wolfman and the Butterfly Girl. One night Coralie stumbles upon a striking young man taking pictures of moonlit trees in the woods off the Hudson River. The dashing photographer is Eddie Cohen, a Russian immigrant who has run away from his community and his job as a tailor s apprentice. When Eddie photographs the infamous Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, he becomes embroiled in the mystery behind a young woman s disappearance. And he ignites the heart of Coralie. Alice Hoffman weaves her trademark magic, romance, and masterful storytelling to unite Coralie and Eddie in a tender and moving story of young love in tumultuous times. The Museum of Extraordinary Things is, a lavish tale about strange yet sympathetic people (The New York Times Book Review)."

What a masterpiece-started it on the plane Monday and just finished. I‘m gobsmacked by Hoffman‘s range of talent, her magic with words, plots, subplots, characters, settings...AND connections to real life events in early 20th century: TriangleShirtwaist Factory fire/laborers‘ rights, and Coney Island‘s Dreamland/exotic humans and other poor creatures. This is a must-read for Hoffman readers-cuts across genres. #authoramonth2021 #bookspinbingo

So gripping, leaving you guessing until the end. I love the way Alice Hoffman writes. This book has two main characters and it bounces back and forth between each one‘s backstory and present time. It was an intriguing way to write the sorry and I loved it. I‘m using this one as my #headcoveringoncover for #booked2020

I keep trying to like Hoffman‘s writing more, but I‘m just not a fan of the structure here and the switching perspectives from two first person POVs to third person... And the characters themselves aren‘t very realistic to me... the historical setting is interesting but the sideshow/human oddities didn‘t feel all that fresh... but the audio is performed well and I enjoyed it for some fun #AudioColoring!

Crazeedi I have had same opinion of Hoffman, I've finished her books, but they have mostly left me saying something is missing in her writing... 6y
Jas16 I seem to either love her books or really dislike them. This was one I really disliked. 6y
k.reads.5 I haven't read this one but I did really enjoy her book The Marriage of Opposites. 6y

I am a sucker for any kind of circus/carnival/side show type story but throw in #mermaids and I‘m in heaven! Shocked to see this book got crappy reviews on Litsy- I really enjoyed this one and gave it 4 ⭐️. However, seeing as how I live in a mermaid house, I may be a little biased lol 🤷‍♀️

My 1st Hoffman book & certainly will not be my last one! Albeit a slow burn story, I enjoyed this book immensely:

✔ Beautiful & lustrous prose
✔ Character driven story
✔ Circus/oddities themed story with great descriptive writing
✔ Quotable book

❌ Good but not great plot
❌ Italic font used for 1st person narration is harsh for the eyes!

Rating: 4🌟

Love this quote! ???

"The human eye was not capable of true sight, for it was constrained by its own humanness, clouded by regret, and opinion, and faith. Whatever was witnessed in the real world was unknowable in real time. It was the eye of the camera that captured the world as it truly was."

I listened to the audio and there are three narrators: Coralie, Eddie, and a generic narrator (voiced by Judith Light). Of the story itself, only Coralie‘s story interested me. (Which is why I have said next to nothing about Eddie in my summary, as I can‘t tell you much more, as my mind wandered during his parts.) Cont in comments...

LibraryCin As for the audio, one thing that bothered me was Judith Light‘s dialogue for any character – it seemed to me very staccato/robotic, but only when she was doing the dialogue. The audio includes a short interview/conversation (that kind of disintegrates into gushing about each other‘s work at times) between Judith Light and Alice Hoffman. 6y
LibraryCin The book/story, though – really didn‘t interest me all that much, though in addition to Coralie‘s story, there were some interesting tidbits about the Triangle Factory fire. 6y
