As Red As Blood
As Red As Blood | Salla Simukka
The first story in the thrilling Nordic crime series The Snow White Trilogy, an international success published in 46 countries worldwide. 'Fans of Nesb and Larsson won't be disappointed' Publishers Weekly The streets of Finland are frozen and white with snow. And nothing is as red against snow as blood . . . Seventeen-year-old Lumikki Andersson is hardly your average teenager. She lives by herself in the city of Tampere, Finland, and has a firm rule to mind nobody's business but her own. But that rule is put to the test when she happens upon five hundred washed euro notes hanging up to dry in her school's darkroom, and it is shattered once Lumikki realises who owns them. Caught in an increasingly tangled web of deception, corruption and danger, Lumikki finds herself navigating Tampere's dark underbelly in her quest to expose its shocking connection to the international drugs trade. Lumikki is smart, but is she smarter than a master criminal? Can she bring down the infamous 'Polar Bear' - or will she become another one of his victims?

I read this as part of my reading around the world challenge, and it was pretty good. There are two more to the trilogy but crime, suspense and thriller and not my usual genre so I don‘t think I will continue. It‘s a great beginning if that is a genre you love though.

Going to start reading this book set in Finland for part of my read around the world challenge. (I‘m also back to reading Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman as it‘s finally back in from the library…that‘s been one hell of a slow read!)

Mehso-so

Not enjoying this book is mostly on me. For some reason, I thought this was a fairytale retelling, not a whodunit / mystery plot. Jarring transition to say the least. Well written, overly descriptive which sets up the story well in the beginning, but becomes overwhelming (with too much bogged backstory) when the action hits.

Third book for #bookspinbingo

@TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks When I saw that cover I immediately thought “dark fairytale retelling“ so you aren't alone!! 4y

"Once upon a time, a boy learned how to have fear."

This was a cool book, although sometimes it was a bit too much (everything happens to Lumikki), the story just flows nicely and overall there's a good vibe to it.
My first time with this author and I am actually very curious about the second book!

Implausible and simplistic. Definitely not for me.

I‘ve read 55% and I‘m very unimpressed. Everything is so implausible and exaggerated, like Lumikki having all this experience and knowledge while being like 12 (ok, 17) and all of a sudden doing 13 pull-ups. Seriously?! The author should have tried doing one before writing that.

DeborahSmall 😂😂 7y
julesG What? You can't do 13 pull-ups? You whimp! 😜😜😜 just kidding. I can do one, then my palms give out. 7y
tricours @julesG I can‘t even do one! 😩 What kind of exercise do you do? 7y
See All 7 Comments
julesG @tricours Knitting? ? For real, I have multiple sclerosis and due to that can't do a lot of exercise (any more). I try to do a bit of Yoga or Pilates every day and go swimming once a week. The operative word being "try". I think the one pull-up is possible since there is this large water pipe in the cellar that I use as a monkey bar, at age 37. Somehow you have to make going into the cellar to do the laundry fun, right? 7y
tricours @julesG that‘s very impressive then! I do CrossFit, and extremely few of the women there can do actual pull-ups without adding elastics 7y
julesG @tricours A friend of mine raves about crossfit, but she also struggles with pull-ups. I don't dare to try crossfit. I'm afraid of the repercussions afterward. Do you do the tractor tyre thingy? 7y
tricours @julesG we have a tyre, but I‘ve never seen anyone use it, probably because we‘re right next to a road where people have to be able to drive 😄 7y

I'm so behind on photo challenges! I want to catch up so I'm going to see how many I can combine 😅 Is that cheating? This is for #readathon #red and #mysteriousmonday for #SpookyOctober by @Jess7. I haven't read this one, though I got it from the publisher last year - it's the first in a YA Nordic noir trilogy. I'm not a massive fan of thrillers but that description drew me in, and a couple of friends have read it and really enjoyed it.

#TBR time. Between #SpringCleaningReadathon and Dewey's 24-Hour #Readathon, I'm hoping to make some progress on a few books I started awhile ago and a book I need to start. Maybe I'll sneak in some novellas I've been meaning to read and (probably) a bit of Saga, too.

Inbox/outbox! I finished As Red As Blood this afternoon. I though it was good, but not great (too many completely unbelievable occurrences in one story) but I would check out more by this author. I'm so looking forward to Soulless, which was a gift from my #cupidgoespostal match!! @jpmcwisemorgan

This was only okay and the ending was weak. It got a couple of starred reviews, so maybe it's just me. Or my meh reaction to the book might be because I didn't love the audiobook. Narrator Ann Marie Lee was too earnest and breathy for my taste. If I continue with the trilogy, I think I'll stick to print.

BeckyLeJ Nah, I had the same reaction. I liked it well enough to read the next one but I didn't love it, unfortunately. 8y
BethFishReads @BeckyLeJ glad I'm not alone. 8y

Have switched to audio for this. I'll report back when I've listened more than 1/2 hour. Ann Marie Lee narrates with enthusiasm (too much?,) and I hear some breathiness. I'll let you know what I think tomorrow.

Who can resist something touted as Nordic Gothic? I can't. First sentence: "Glittering white lay all around." @Crownpublishing
