The One-in-a-Million Boy
The One-in-a-Million Boy | Monica Wood
The incandescent story of a 104-year-old woman and the sweet, strange young boy assigned to help her around the house a friendship that touches each member of the boys unmoored family For years, guitarist Quinn Porter has been on the road, chasing gig after gig, largely absent to his twice-ex-wife Belle and their odd, Guinness recordsobsessed son. When the boy dies suddenly, Quinn seeks forgiveness for his paternal shortcomings by completing the requirements for his sons unfinished Boy Scout badge. For seven Saturdays, Quinn does yard work for Ona Vitkus, the wily 104-year-old Lithuanian immigrant the boy had visited weekly. Quinn soon discovers that the boy had talked Ona into gunning for the world record for Oldest Licensed Driver and thats the least of her secrets. Despite himself, Quinn picks up where the boy left off, forging a friendship with Ona that allows him to know the son he never understood, a boy who was always listening, always learning. The One-in-a-Million Boy is a richly layered novel of hearts broken seemingly beyond repair and then bound by a stunning act of human devotion.

This fell a bit short of my expectations. My main problem was that the story puts the least interesting character at the forefront. There‘s a Lithuanian immigrant, an eccentric boy obsessed w/world records, & a grieving mother, but instead, we focus on a mediocre musician who has a good heart but is still a neglectful father. I felt like every other character had a more interesting story & was disappointed each time we returned to his‘s narrative.

This book melted my heart. Take a somewhat cantankerous, 104-year-old woman and add a Guinness world record-obsessed boy and you get an unlikely friendship which leads to other unlikely friendships. Touching and sweet with a perfect ending.

“Because the story of your life never starts at the beginning.”

This is the story of friendship between 104 year old Ona Vitkus and an 11 year old boy, but it's a joy to see it unfold, and watch how the story develops because of this relationship.
The characters in this book were good. Ona, feisty and 104 years young, Quinn the absentee father, Belle the broken and grieving mother, and the unnamed, World-record-obsessed boy.

"Picture it: One thousand hummingbirds with ruby throats fell out of the blue and straight to us, two old ladies who couldn't believe their eyes."

The hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world, this kind of fits in perfectly with the theme of the book.

#JulyWrapUp

Had a bit of a reading slump this month, but a re-read of the tagged book for a bookclub ended up being the perfect #slumpbuster !

I read a couple of fantastic cookbooks, and also really liked The Girl on the Page, a gift from a lovely Litten...

Favorite new-to-me fiction read was the 5⭐️ ‘The Nickel Boys‘ by Colson Whitehead.... I‘m looking forward to discussing it at the B&N bookclub I‘ll be hosting on August 13th....📚💕

Cathythoughts This doesn‘t look like a reading slump 🤔📚📚📚Well done !! I must get a copy of The Chain ! I‘m in need of a decent thriller 👍🏻♥️ 5y
KarenUK @cathythoughts The Chain is fun and a really well done thriller.... very pacy, edge of your seat stuff. 👍 5y

My book haul from 2nd and Charles on Sunday. I technically only went there to get a gift card for a friend, but y‘all know how that goes. I can‘t pass up a buy 5 used books, get 5 free deal. The two in the middle are books I‘ve been on the library waitlist for a while so those are some fun finds and the rest are just whatever struck my fancy - fantasy, animals, classics, etc.

Reread for a bookclub- just as good as I remembered.
I again fell in love with this lovely cast of characters. Ona, feisty and 104 years young, Quinn the absentee father, Belle the broken and grieving mother, and the unnamed, World-record-obsessed boy.
This wonderful story of grief and friendship, just spoke to me so completely. And I just love Quinn as a character. His complex feelings of grief, guilt, honor and duty were so moving. Recommended👍

Overall a very heartwarming and touching story. It dragged a little in the middle and frankly, Quinn did almost nothing to impress me as a character. He was mostly self absorbed and kind of cold. Ona, the boy and the way that the author chose to end the book saved it all. The ending was heartbreaking and beautiful. I would still highly recommend this book and the audio was amazing. #audiobook #tearjerker #hoopla

Initially I found the book charming but it quickly wore off as the book focused more on the father and characters other than the old woman and young boy. Ultimately the charm left with the boy and it made a book that was already longer than it should have been feel that much longer.
