It's probably more a result of a a cozy rainy Sunday after a busy Friday and Saturday, but I found myself nodding off repeatedly while reading this. There was a plot, not too much nonsense, and some sharp satire about faith without reason...I can deal with a con man that is relatively harmless or possibly psychic, I can get into a computer programmer who likes mapping the world in music, 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? and I love a little old professor who does conjuring tricks and has an unusual relationship with time. There was a spot of violence and violent intentions I wasn't expecting, the ghost lore feels more introduced than explored, but where it all really falls down is that my copy had a cat on the front cover and a mention of a cat on the back and very little cat content, no actual cat characters present, in the book. Bad advertising, for shame! 7mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 I think Adams wanted it to be something a little more than silly, and I was looking for silly, and I'm not sure either of us got what we wanted. If I approach the rest of the series as sci-fi-fantasy-mysteries with a surrealist satirical twist I'll probably have a better time of it. 7mo

I think I can definitively say I've “outgrown“ Adams's humor. There is a lot to like in this especially if the slightly absurd is your cup of tea but for me this was a little underwhelming. I didn't hate my time with this but I also didn't think it was laugh out loud funny either. Solid story where seemingly disparate elements come together in the end but only just okay for me.

HeyT This was my #BookSpin for July @TheAromaofBooks 2y
RamsFan1963 I liked the TV series more than the book. 2y
TheAromaofBooks He's an author who only sometimes works for me. I don't know if it's my mood or his writing that doesn't always mesh haha 2y
Kimberlone I could only get through the first couple Hitchhikers books…they definitely get repetitive and his sarcastic writing loses some of its charm 2y

#BookReport
Pretty good reading week. Finished the last three Earthsea installments in my omnibus so I got to cross it off my bookspin backlist. Also got about half way through Dirk Gently.

#Weekly Forecast
Goal this week is to finish both Dirk Gently and Anansi Boys and try to keep up with my 155 page a day schedule.

How are a missing cat, ghosts, time travel, the extinction of the human race, and a murder all interconnected? If you figure it out, will you let me know? I‘m still kinda confused by the ending of this book. 😂

This contains Adams‘s usual brilliant wordplay, fun characters, and bizarre plot. But I really didn‘t connect with this one. This was just too short for how much Adams tried to cram into this. The narrator was on point though. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 4y
vlwelser The next one is actually better. It makes more sense anyway. It's still totally bizarre. 4y

Having read the book, I thought I would try the TV series to make sense of it all. Boy was I wrong the TV series is more strange than the book but I liked it. Found it mildly addictive and finished season one. The series seems very different from the book but I could have missed much in the book. Entertaining and fast paced.

When I put this book on my list I didn't realize it was science fiction, I don't like science fiction. My husband said the author should have been a clue but I am not familiar with science fiction writers. LOL I did not do my homework. But I am making my way through the book quickly as I am doing my civic duty in jury service. I have loads of time to read today. #1001books

Honestly, I didn't really care very much about the characters or the storyline, but I had fun with the journey. Adams was a master at playing with the set-ups, the twisting of expectations, the sly humor. It was much more fun to enjoy the ride and the clever writing than to actually worry about what was happening or try and figure things out myself - my normal way. Despite the fun, I'd much rather reread the Hitchhiker series than this one.

During the first 70% of the book you are like "WHAT'S GOING ON?" and then BAMMM!!! there are aliens, a spaceship, a sofa stuck on a staircase, 2 ghosts and an electric monk, whatever that means!! and the fate of human race depends on a poem.

This book is annoying at times but really fun when every weird thing fits together. It's not a long book but one has to be patient because everything fits together, everything is 'HOLISTIC'!!

wanderinglynn One of my fave books! Have you watched the Amazon Prime adaptation? It‘s pretty good. I like the actor who plays Dirk. 👍🏻 5y

I might have been a bit prejudiced but it really feels like a waste of time, this book. I started it because it is #setinspace (kind of) and I needed that prompt for #pop18 and #LRC but I can‘t finish it. Also, there are some #wildcreatures such as a dead cat and a horse with an electric monk on it 😱😱.

Tex2Flo I think you have to be of a mood for Adams. He is absurd in his logic, so reading him like other comic or sci-fi authors is challenging. He is no Hiaissen nor Le Guin. He is of himself and a treasure. I can only read about one of his a year and remain sane. 6y

Loved it! The plot is impossible to describe, but I really enjoyed it. After reading Space Opera, I needed to go back to an author that does this kind of humor in a way that works for me. Now, I think I'll read all of Douglas Adams' completed works. I'm also going to have to watch the television series based on Dirk Gently.

Prompt 29: Murder Investigation #SFFTBRChallenge @DuckOfDoom

TobeyTheScavengerMonk This story actually started out as a Doctor Who script titled Shada, but when it didn‘t get made Adams created Dirk to solve the mystery instead of the Doctor. 6y

I've enjoyed the 2010 TV series starring Stephen Mangan *and* the 2016 series with Samuel Barnett in the title role. I own the book in hardcover, but I actually read with my ears, via Overdrive, which offered an unabridged, fully casted by BBC version.

I finished just as I pulled into the library lot for a special board of trustees "retreat" (meeting lasting almost 4 hours). Pipe cleaners were provided as a creativity booster/fidget outlet.

GondorGirl There are a few graphic novels that are inspired by the books. My husband (the biggest Adams fan ever) enjoyed them quite a bit. 6y

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I‘ve loved all his books in high school, including this one! If memory serves the main otherworldly issue that Dirk ends up dealing with was an idea for a Doctor Who serial that Adams was working on. Since Adams‘ passing the script has been turned into a book as well 7y
saresmoore @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Oh, I will absolutely be reading that—thank you! I am loving this book.
