When Zane shot Death, he learned, too late, that he would have to assume his place, speeding over the world riding his pale horse, and ending the lives of others. Sooner than he would have thought possible, Zane found himself being drawn to Satan's plot. Already the Prince of Evil was forging a trap in which Zane must act to destroy Luna, the woman he loved...unless he could discover the only way out.... The first novel of the INCARNATIONS OF IMMORATLITY series. From the Paperback edition.

I read this series as a kid (along with a fair amount of other Piers Anthony books). It obviously hasn‘t aged well (especially how he writes his female characters), but there is some fun to be had with the concept.

Well, look who finally joined the party
#IncarnationsChapterADay

Gotta say - it‘s good, but it definitely landed better on my 15 year old sensibility. As an adult it feels a bit thinly developed, and slightly childish.

And yeah ... Piers loves him some titty 🙄

DreesReads I read this around the same age. I remember nothing about the book! 6y
CSeydel @AudreyMorris I LOVED this series when I was in high school. Absolutely thought it was amazing, thought-provoking, great literature. It‘s not. 6y
DreesReads I loved John Christopher‘s Tripods series in....middle school? I have intentionally not reread them. I was extremely disappointed in James and the Giant Peach (my fave!!!) when I read it to my son, and that was it. I have never been a big re-reader, but now I just don‘t 🤣. Having loved a book once is good enough for me! Also, more time to read new things. 6y

It‘s my first time reading Anthony, and overall I enjoyed this story. Yes, it‘s dated, & yep definitely some unnecessary female sexualization, but overall I liked the story and it was a fun read juxtaposed with my current political read. I liked the play of good verses evil and all the grey areas, the exploration of original sin, and what if bad things are done for good reasons. It was a bit too simple in some places, but overall interesting read.

Ubookquitous @Riveted_Reader_Melissa yep, flawed but an interesting plot. Are you reading the second book? 6y
Lizpixie I was obsessed with him as a teenager. I think I read every book of his that my local library had.❤️ 6y

JazzFeathers I've read mostly negative review of this on account of the sexism, so it's good to read a more balanced review. I read Antrona only once, as a kid, didn't particularly like him... though l don't remember why. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers Probably the sexism! 😂 Some of it I just rolled my eyes at, but kept reading. I‘m pretty sure I‘d have at some of the situations the women are placed in, that often have them unnecessarily naked and/or offering sex, even as a teen... but despite that big flaw, the underlying idea was interesting and thought provoking. Living in a country that is STILL debating abortion and other issues, his take on original sin, was risky for its.. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ... time (the 80‘s), and I definitely would have loved it for that even then. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Ubookquitous Yes, I‘m hoping to catch up this week! 6y
Ubookquitous @JazzFeathers the sexism is pretty obvious but on occasion he flips it - in book two there is a moment when the MC Norton (Time) is sent to a female doctor for a fertility test - this time it is the turnaround that is funny - and Norton comments about that must be how women feel about male doctors LOL 6y
Ubookquitous @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m glad you are sticking around. The sexism has changed my view a bit, but the plot gets pretty intriguing and there is some good humor. Anthony knows his writing isn‘t award winning but he was all about story 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Ubookquitous I got that sense too, he played to the cliches in this one, but also subverted them when he wanted too, Fate and Nature weren‘t suffering any fools. Which is another reason I liked it and will continue on. Plus yes, there are many things you‘ll notice now looking at it today, today is a different lens, but when it was written it was hardly an unusual troupe... fantasy then had its standard plot devices too, and really it wasn‘t.... 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...just fantasy. Romance had its own cringeworthy troupes of that time of kidnappings leading to love, Soap Opera‘s had rape victims falling for their rapists...you can‘t really blame the guy for writing what was selling at the moment. And I give him huge credit for pushing the boundaries in other aspects of it... heaven and hell, church/religious lines, etc. so, still a pick for me. 6y
Ubookquitous @Riveted_Reader_Melissa so true - Conan the Barbarian? So many... and as the Sad Puppies episode at the Hugo voting shows, there are still some who like their SFF to remain that way! On the whole, I‘ve learned to separate how I feel about an authors and artist from their works otherwise I‘d have to ignore much of art, literature, music, film, and more 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Ubookquitous Funny I was thinking of the Conan and Red Sonya movies when I typed that! Hahah! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Ubookquitous Beast Master, LOL. Oh the books, tv shows, and films I loved at the time! 6y
Ubookquitous Right?! Even Star Trek with the tight mini‘s and body-suits? And I love so much new SFF and the classic SFF from women and POC authors, but there are some good stories albeit you have to tolerate the ‘isms and lack of diversity 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Ubookquitous Yes..Six of Nine was in the new, improved, female captain even, series. Great diversity in that cast too...but catsuit! LOL. Even further along, you‘ll get the newer Battlestar Gallactica, with edgy and complex female characters, but there has to be a hot, sexy, sex bunny in a red barely-there dress too. Can‘t leave for space without one, or for a desert island either (Ginger), or get a genie🧞‍♀️who must say yes master to you. (edited) 6y
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa So nice to hear some sensibile words. It drives me up the wall when people go out of their way to judge authors strictly by today's standard. And it happens quite often, even here on Litsy... 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers It‘s hard, you read something today and automatically judge it by today. But with books and movies that can led you to miss some really great stuff, even if it was really great for its time period only. The original Star Trek pushes boundaries with an interracial kiss, that wouldn‘t raise eyebrows today, but it‘s still important... just like Huck Finn uses the N word which is a no-go today, but made perfect sense then historically. (edited) 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers You really have to read a story for its influence on you, but also of the time period it was written. We‘re reading Tolkien now, and I still love it, but if I was judging him by the Bechdel test I‘d have to ditch him along with Star Wars, most of Star Trek, and heck most fantasy & sci-fi prior to the 90‘s. Yes, they are not perfect. They were created in imperfect times, but that doesn‘t mean there isn‘t other great stuff in there... 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa .. plus if you are paying attention you will then notice what walls of society they were pushing on for their time and subverting, just a little here and there. And for better or worse, it takes a lot of tiny nudges here and there before things change. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa That‘s the great part of science fiction and fantasy, and as we were talking about the other day speculative fiction. They give you that view into what the world could be like with a little shift here or a little push there, but for goodness sake, I don‘t expect every author to be 💯 a fortune teller and take the leap in all areas to what we consider normal or correct today. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Just like I‘m sure things I think are phenomenally ahead of their time today, will have obvious shortcomings when looked at by future generations, since our social mores shift so quickly over time. 6y
Ubookquitous @Riveted_Reader_Melissa - 7 of 9‘s Catsuit - to paraphrase Jane Lynch in reference to Sports Illustrated‘ swimsuit issue - as a feminist I‘m offended but as a lesbian I‘m all for it! 🤣🤣 I agree that progress is important but contextualizing is important too. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Ubookquitous Yes. I agree. I can see why people had complaints about this book, but it had many good qualities too. So I‘m going with the old, “don‘t throw out the baby with the bath water”, saying. Don‘t ditch the whole thing, because one part is dated. I‘m reading this series, Tolkien, Discworld, & Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy this year and all are a bit dated in their way (and most are first reads for me), maybe next year I‘ll have to ... 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...re-read some of my high school loves and see how they hold up. (edited) 6y
Ubookquitous Yes - Wuthering Heights is a fav but if written today, I don't know that I'd read it. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Ubookquitous Agreed! He‘d be a totally horrid stalker, even stalking the next generation for goodness sake. Lots of PFA‘s and arrests for him. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Ubookquitous seriously, he‘s the nightmare boyfriend from hell. 6y

I liked the plot but the prose and world building were lacking. Then there was the sexism. It was disgusting and some others words I will spare you. There were so many things that the author could have explored and it would have been a great book. The issue of doing your job versus doing what is right is a big one in the story.

Ubookquitous A fair assessment- my view has changed on this book and while I am continuing to read the series it is with a different lens than when I read it in my early 20‘s. 6y

Well. I finished it. Pros: great premise, fascinating ideas, some interesting exploration of those ideas, and a decent plot. Cons: Holy bell hooks—the sexism! The female objectification! Also some fairly muddled worldbuilding and mediocre writing overall. I was interested to read Piers Anthony, and the series premise is interesting, but for me, the pros just don‘t outweigh the cons. I give it two skulls out of five.💀💀

Final thoughts? I think Zane grew and that the nature of the manipulation to put him in the position became clear... and hints about the elaborate plot the incarnations are engaged in against Satan is hinted at. The sexism is annoying but I rolled my eyes and moved on... and the philosophical ideas around the nature of evil and religion were interesting. #incarnationsChapterADay

Overall, I enjoyed it. Easy read, some interesting concepts and a nice blend of science fiction and fantasy. Yet, as a story went, I never really got past my initial dislike of Zane and felt he had very little agency in the tale. Even the resolution felt a little pat. Anthony's world view and sexism also seemed to distract me. It says something when your favorite character was a horse/car. #incarnationschapteraday

TheSpineView I feel the exact same way you do. The main thing that kept me reading was Zane's struggle with moral issues. I don't think I can make myself read the next book. Just the thought of how the author will handle a female MC gives me the shivers. 6y

I finished this one this afternoon. I can't say I enjoyed this one all that much. I really liked some ideas but found the execution to be lacking. There is a ton of sexism, which one could argue are the characters themselves but it just brought down the story. Add that to the fact that many of the characters were one-note & it basically felt like a slog for me. I dont know if I will bother with the rest of the series.

#incarnationschapteraday

mcipher I‘m working on it and I feel the same way - I went into this book with all these fond memories and I‘m kind of surprised at how little it‘s living up to them! I must have been much more willing to ignore the sexism and racism and other squickiness when I was a teenager. 6y
TheSpineView I agree with you both. The sexism has just totally killed my enthusiasm for the book. There were so many missed opportunities by the author. Just exploring morality and what it means to live a moral life would have lifted this story up. @mcipher 6y
InLibrisVeritas @mcipher There really was a lot of problematic writing in this one, and if i had read this when i was younger I would have probably let most of it slide too. I was a lot more forgiving. But now it makes my skin crawl. 6y
Guildedearlobe I felt very similarly. How was the audio version. I considered going that route but I have mixed feelings about the narrator. (edited) 6y
InLibrisVeritas @Guildedearlobe I thought the audio was pretty decent, I had no complaints about it I was listening on 2.75 speed though I 6y

Trying to catch up on this one, but dear gods the sexism. 😑 It has some really interesting ideas and portrayals but all the women are subject go evaluation based on attractiveness.

I also just read an article about Anthony that makes me sick to my stomach. I am curious to see of this will get better & if the others in the series are better, but I also don't have a ton of desire to move past this one when I finish it.

#incarnationschapteraday

BarbaraJean Same. Not sure if I‘m gonna continue after this one. The ideas are interesting, but I‘m having a hard time getting past the constant sexism, and the quality of the writing in general leaves a lot to be desired. 6y
Ubookquitous @InLibrisVeritas yes, the sexism is more blatant than I remember, but seems almost a hallmark of much of the genre in the 80‘s and 90‘s - and for the time frame overall. I‘m finding it difficult to reconcile my enjoyment of the creativity of the premise of the mortals who take these offices and how Satan manipulates things to gain an outcome that favors him with the sexism and and other viewpoints of WHCCM. 6y

Day 6, Chapter 6. Zane is growing into the job, but it is clear that others have conspired to place him in the position. We also are seeing Zane grow a bit, reconsider some of the less than admirable uses of magic

#incarnationsChapterADay

mcipher I caught back up! This was a quick chapter and I did like what happened here - Death stopping the suffering of the people in the hospital and the concert bringing together the different groups. Despite his preachiness and some sexism and racism going on here, I think the message was a good one. 6y
TheSpineView I like that Zane is developing a moral compass. The irony here, Death with a sense of morals! 😆 Maybe it has always been there and he is rediscovering it. 6y
Guildedearlobe I didn‘t like Zane at first and am still unsure about him as a character. He seemed hapless at first but I‘m glad to see he‘s starting to make his own choices and not just be pulled around by other players. 6y
Ubookquitous Yes - agreed that Zane is becoming more like ale and that he is bucking the system. 6y

This book has a strange mix of ahead of its time technology and antiquated social interactions that I often feel unbalanced reading it. Like how can he envision advances that in technology (even though its magical) yet fail to see societal progression. Here the sharing of sins to prove their worthiness was an interesting twist but still full of male ego fantasy.

Took me a while to get through this chapter due to work. #incarnationschapteraday

Ubookquitous My guess is that like many of those who have privilege- in this case gender, orientation, religion, economic, and race privilege- he doesn‘t see the need for progression. 6y
jmofo I‘m looking forward to joining the buddyread but there are reasons why I haven‘t read one of these in a while. An author can have an interesting premise for a book but if the social concerns distract me, it might not matter how fun the plot is or how great the characters are. 6y
TheSpineView I read most of the Xanith series over 30 years ago. I don't remember it being so blatant about social issues. I am wondering if this series was before or after this one and what changed. 6y
Ubookquitous @TheSpineView - Xanth was written before, during, and after... this series was written from 1983-1990, with the final book added in 2007. I read the first couple in 85 or 86 then as each came out while an undergrad. 6y
TheSpineView The more I read and ponder the social issues, I have come to the conclusion that the story is a product of both the author's views and the time period. But also what society at the time seemed acceptable 6y

I found this *amazing* cover for On a Pale Horse—Death just cruising around in his flying powder-blue 1980s “steed”...with pop-up headlights. 😂

Today‘s chapter has me intrigued by Zane‘s philosophical & moral dilemmas over being Death. I‘m interested to explore those themes further! But I‘m also pretty bothered by the rampant sexism and objectification—particularly in the “pigskin” game. 😕 Please tell me it‘s ironic...
#Incarnationschapteraday

SkeletonKey Upon rereading Piers Anthony as an adult I discovered...ugh. Just ugh. So much sexism and grossness. They went straight to the used bookstore. 6y
BarbaraJean @SkeletonKey Yeah, that‘s where I‘m worried this is going. The concept and ideas in this one are intriguing, but I‘m glad my county library system has the others, so when/if I continue through the series, I won‘t be spending any $$! 6y
SkeletonKey @BarbaraJean - Good plan! I hope it gets better. 6y
See All 18 Comments
Ubookquitous @BarbaraJean Yes, that bothered me as well, and having read them early in college I don‘t know that it stuck out for me... or at least as much as it does now. Certainly it runs through much of SFF in the 80‘s so I‘m not surprised- I‘m curious if the themes and ideas are enough for me and other to move past that (edited) 6y
TheSpineView I was thinking while I was reading that this written way before political correctness was around and by a guy. 6y
BarbaraJean @Ubookquitous @TheSpineView Yeah, when I think about the publication date it‘s not surprising! It‘s so blatantly male-gaze-y. So far I‘ve been able to just roll my eyes and move on—I agree, it‘ll be interesting to see if the ideas counterbalance the eye rolls. 6y
mcipher It definitely has an old-school male point of view. I wonder if it‘s partly the time period? I noticed that old Stephen King is often that way, too. Not that it makes things better- it‘s just interesting. Still enjoying my re-read so far though! 6y
Ostaff1 There is a strong argument that it‘s not just sexism, but also pedophilia. So, no, none of those books in my house. More details here: https://litreactor.com/columns/themes-of-pedophilia-in-the-works-of-piers-anthon... 6y
Guildedearlobe The sexism is troublesome. Sometimes it‘s hard to know if it‘s just the character or the character is a reflection of the author. Here it was interesting how he met a woman who basically said that women think emotionally and not logically, it was meant facetiously but it felt more than that. It would be nice if a female character could balance out Zane‘s worldview 6y
Ubookquitous I think rereading for me I‘m noticing more that is clearly sexist. The later books on Fate and Nature are female main characters so it will be interesting to read. Some is likely the author, some the hyper-masculinity of the period and genre... the question then is if sexist in attitude either characters or author does it ruin the book or just change how we read it? I always think of Mailer and Hemingway when I struggle with this topic 6y
BarbaraJean @Ostaff1 😳🤢Ugh. It‘s difficult when I find out stuff like this, because this specific content doesn‘t seem to be present in this series (yet—though now it will be under far closer scrutiny as I read!), and I try to judge each work on its own merit or lack thereof. But the article you linked shows it as more than just skeevy content in a few books—it seems to be an underlying theme throughout his work, which is far more problematic. 6y
BarbaraJean I don‘t like to dismiss an author‘s entire oeuvre based on a couple sketchy scenes, but it seems this is more than that. For now, I‘ll finish this one and see what content is there. I‘m more hesitant to continue the series—and will certainly check them out from the library rather than throwing any money at them. 6y
BarbaraJean @Guildedearlobe Agreed—it can be hard to distinguish what pieces may just be the author creating a character/world, and what pieces are the author‘s own attitudes. I get the sense here that the sexism is both. It will be interesting to read one of the books that has a female main character, as @Ubookquitous said. If I get that far! 6y
BarbaraJean @Ubookquitous That‘s part of my dilemma—the balance between critical reading and the judgment that it‘s not worth wading through the problematic content. It doesn‘t necessarily ruin it if I can just roll my eyes and move on, but now knowing more about the larger context of his work, I‘m a bit more torn. Have to figure out where the line is for me with this, when it seems to move beyond questionable content and into “horrible person” territory. 6y
Ubookquitous Yes - although I have to say that while this series isn‘t great art, overall I try to leave my views of the individual separate from the work - otherwise some wonderful books and art of all types would be unknown - Dali, Picasso, Mailer, VS Naipaul. Great art or literature can be separate from the asshole who wrote or created it. Here I‘m still eye rolling 6y
Ostaff1 @Ubookquitous I appreciate that point of view, but IMHO, I can‘t think of any redeeming features in these novels to make it worth my time to wade through pedophilia and sexism. I no longer read or recommend Marion Zimmer Bradley for the same reason, and her books were arguably far superior. (edited) 6y
Ubookquitous @Ostaff1 - I respect your viewpoint and I think this is a common dialogue in society now about what to do with the works created by people who turn out to be abusers, racists, sexists, etc. 6y
Ostaff1 In this case, however, it‘s not about the actions of the artist, it‘s about the content of the art. There‘s a difference. 6y

@Ubookquitous I am off and running this morning. Just trying to get a head start on the day. I am afraid if I don't read the first chapter now life will get in the way.😋 Not sure if I like this alternate book cover that is on the ebook. Ubookquitous @Guildedearlobe did you try the library- it‘s a classic. You can as#Lao order used from Amazon and have it in a couple days (edited) 6y
Guildedearlobe @Ubookquitous my library has other books in the series but not that one. They have the ebook on Ovwrdrive. I‘ll just use that until I can find a print one. 6y
LitsyBuddyRead Thanks for the tag- @LitsyBuddyRead is only for our specific buddy read we call it “Litsy Buddy Read” (and we use the hashtag with our name) - so we can‘t repost because it would get confusing, but otherwise we would. We do our own - check it out - you‘re welcome to join us! Thanks! 6y
Ubookquitous @LitsyBuddyRead ok thanks- wasn‘t sure how it worked 6y

2BR02B I think I'm going to have to sit this one out. 😕 September's shaping up to be a busy month. 6y
jmofo Super cool! I‘m joining up when you fine folk get to where I left off! Thanks for the tag! 6y
Ubookquitous @2BR02B understood... Always welcome to join in if you find the time. 6y
mcipher Uh oh I forgot to get the book 🤦‍♀️Will get on that ASAP! 6y
CSeydel AaaauuuuuGGGGGHHHHHH! Our library has the book, but not at my neighborhood branch, so I placed a hold as soon as I got back from vacation. Couple days ... nothing. Now it‘s Labor Day, library is closed for 3 days, fine, I can wait until Tuesday. Nope ... All week, still no book. Today I look on the online catalog — and it‘s checked out, due back 9/27. WTF!!! Looks like I‘ll be joining in a bit later ... (edited) 6y
Ubookquitous Ugh that sucks- but the books are more or less quick reads. Maybe check out the next one too? LOL 😂 6y

Another #blameitonlitsy buddy read to distract me from my TBR!😂 I‘ve never read Piers Anthony, so I‘m excited to dive into these. Join in if you‘re so inclined! Litsy buddy reads are the best, and the chapter a day format is SO doable, even in the midst of other reading.

Now I need to track down the first book, as it seems my county library system has the whole series with the exception of—you guessed it—the first one.🙄

Ubookquitous My library drives me crazy - a& 3rd books of a series seems to be a trend @BarbaraJean Amazon has it on kindle for $2.99 (edited) 6y

#IncarnationsChapteraday

Im getting excited for this read along! I loved this series when I was 15 or so and I‘m looking forward to revisiting it.

Follow @Ubookquitous for the schedule. There are 7 books in the series, and each follows one of the “incarnations of immortality” - death, time, fate, nature, war, and finally good and evil. Not as hokey as the Xanth series, but definitely YA as I recall.

Join us!

Ubookquitous @CSeydel there are now 8 - Under a Velvet Cloak is about Night / Nox. I'm guessing for many it will be new! 6y
CSeydel @Ubookquitous What! An 8th book 😳 You are right, it‘s new to me! 6y

I'll post a schedule for the first three books next week. In the meantime, share liberally, tag friends, get them to share. For those rereading - remember, no spoilers. I'm interested in your thoughts on how each hold up, things you might have not noticed when you read previously, etc. For newbies - can wait to hear your impressions

InLibrisVeritas Shared! I can't wait! 6y

Sixth book for #freakyfriday and it was a cracker. I really enjoyed my ride along with Death as he fought Satan for the life of his beloved. The use of language was quite dated, and I could picture this as a cheesy 80s movie, complete with scantily clad women with heaving chests, and a glam metal soundtrack. But I thought it was a great bit of escapism. A solid 4 🌟.

Trying to squeeze a last minute #freakyfriday read in before the end of April. The other three books I haven't managed to read will slot in during the year, I'm sure.

#belovedseries #riotgrams. I should reread - been a long time and I wonder if they will stay as entertaining?

@bookriot

CSeydel LOVE love love this series! Been trying to get my son into them ... no luck yet. 7y
Ubookquitous I got my son into them... He loved the humor @CSeydel (edited) 7y
CSeydel @Ubookquitous how old is your son? Mine is 15, so I might push them at him again. I was probably about 15 when I read them. 7y
Ubookquitous @CSeydel - he is now 28 but was probably 16 or so when he started reading them 7y

With 8 books in all this is by far my favorite fantasy series! #fantasyfriday

ChasingOm I love his Xanth books! 7y
faelinwolf I love this series! I think On a Pale Horse sparked my love of books that have Death as a person. 7y
DivaDiane I read the first Xanth book and while I enjoyed it I couldn't face reading 20 more of the same pun-filled fantasy novels. I'm sure I'd like his SF better. 7y
