Slowly but surely ... trying to keep up with my reading groups!

#StarWarsBuddyRead

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Looks like a great group for December 6y
CSeydel I slipped off the Star Wars train for Rogue One, but this one looks really cool 6y
CSeydel @Ubookquitous ? Are you still reading Incarnations or did you give up? 😬 6y

InLibrisVeritas How are you liking the Incarnations books so far? I had to drop out after the first one 😅 I wasn't a fan. 6y
CSeydel @InLibrisVeritas I don‘t blame you. In honesty I‘m reading them for the nostalgia. I devoured them when I first read them, some 25 years ago. Since then, my expectations for quality literature have shifted somewhat. I‘m not as impressed this time around. 6y
Ubookquitous @CSeydel I am - figured I‘d started Skein Dec 1st if everyone was good with that? 6y
CSeydel @Ubookquitous Oh yay! I thought I had fallen irredeemably behind. 6y
Ubookquitous Lol no I couple of people were far behind so I figured we could delay the start of novel five 6y

Mehso-so

I have to admit I skimmed some of this one....how can the same author who has such great creativity in some of the larger story plots about the fight between incarnations and good and evil, ALSO have some decidedly ugh-worthy side plots filled with inner and outer dialogues than make me feel.... well icky.

Guess it‘s safe to say I‘m really conflicted with this series so far. 🤷‍♀️

#IncarnationsChapterADay

CSeydel Saaaaaame. Sigh, I was looking forward to revisiting this series, but now I‘m finding myself dragging my feet and not wanting to pick them up. 6y
CSeydel Also, he can‘t seem to master “Show, don‘t tell”! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CSeydel I know, when we started this I thought I might revisit me younger selfs favorite fantasy series, that I thought was brilliant as a teen, but now I‘m afraid, what if they don‘t hold up at all either! I‘m scared to re-read mine now! 6y

CSeydel What is the series? 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CSeydel The Landover series by Terry Brooks... the first book is 6y
CSeydel Oh I haven‘t read those! Interesting. I‘m thinking of doing a readalong of Lawrence Watt-Evans Ethshar series, do you know them? My husband‘s a big fan and I‘ve only read a few so far. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CSeydel No, I haven‘t read those. 6y

Started this one last night, I‘m working on catching up with the #IncarnationsChapterADay group next... although for me it should probably be called the #Incarnation2BooksBehindGroup🤪. I‘ll get there though, one book at a time.😉

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CSeydel I‘ve started it! 2 chapters in last night. 6y
JazzFeathers I have no doubt at all that you will catch up 😏 6y

Well, look who finally joined the party
#IncarnationsChapterADay

Gotta say - it‘s good, but it definitely landed better on my 15 year old sensibility. As an adult it feels a bit thinly developed, and slightly childish.

And yeah ... Piers loves him some titty 🙄

DreesReads I read this around the same age. I remember nothing about the book! 6y
CSeydel @AudreyMorris I LOVED this series when I was in high school. Absolutely thought it was amazing, thought-provoking, great literature. It‘s not. 6y
DreesReads I loved John Christopher‘s Tripods series in....middle school? I have intentionally not reread them. I was extremely disappointed in James and the Giant Peach (my fave!!!) when I read it to my son, and that was it. I have never been a big re-reader, but now I just don‘t 🤣. Having loved a book once is good enough for me! Also, more time to read new things. 6y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CSeydel It‘s sad when it happens to childhood favorites, I‘m afraid to re-read some of mine....but some I‘ve re-read I‘m pleasantly surprised by, because they meant totally different things to me know than they did then. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CSeydel And hey you‘re where I am, the next one for me with this series is 6y
CSeydel @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yeah! They‘re pretty quick reads, so I‘m hoping to maybe catch up 6y

Anyone else feel like they play whack-a-mole(book) with their reading commitments and Library holds? Maybe that‘s just me?

Working on catching up my #StarWarsBuddyRead this weekend and then onto #OokBOokClub and #IncarnationsChapterADay (both of which I‘m about a book behind in, so I‘m slowly getting there).

#ReaderConfessions
#FirstWorldReaderProblems

CouronneDhiver Yep 👋🏽 6y
Billypar I can sympathize! There is one pictured in particular that would be satisfying to give a good thump to, and I have it on my audio holds also. But there's a lot of people ahead of me, so I'll need to wait my turn 😋 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Billypar I actually bought it and started it, and then I few chapters in I put it down and just couldn‘t read any more for awhile. I need to get back to it and finish it though. 6y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CouronneDhiver yea! We can start a support group! 6y
llwheeler 😂😂 great pic! that's how I felt this morning when I returned a library book and then 2 holds came in 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @llwheeler Thank you! I‘m so glad it gave you a laugh this morning! 6y
Kaye There‘s one book on there I‘d like to play Whack a Mole with. Can you guess ? 6y
sprainedbrain Yes!! I spend a lot of time managing my holds and loans. 😂 6y
CSeydel Oh my gosh I was just saying this! I got so far behind on Incarnations it‘s ridiculous. I was going to dedicate October to reading only books I own — and then a bunch of library holds came in at once! I‘m dying! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CSeydel I know what you mean, I put a bunch of my library holds on hold until November and decided I‘d make Oct my catch-up on Read-alongs. Incarnations is one I have yet to catch-up on, but I‘m getting closer. 6y

BarbaraTheBibliophage Woo hoo!! Are we starting today?? And I like your new profile picture! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Thank you! Whenever you are ready! Should we do a schedule or just dive in? 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Well, I have one of the early editions. If you have a later edition, they won‘t match exactly. He added some pages back into the later ones. So I think we just dive in!! (edited) 6y
See All 14 Comments
BarbaraTheBibliophage Had I known, I wouldn‘t have bought the vintage copy. And yet, it‘s kind of cool too. So maybe we can compare and figure out what got added back. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage That‘s ok, I have my mom‘s older Hardcover and a kindle version, I‘ll probably read the kindle version just for ease of reading. 6y
ephemeralwaltz Great month! 👏👏👏 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage I just looked, my kindle version has 3 Parts, and 78 chapters. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage The one I have is 823 pages and has 68 chapters. However you decide is cool by me. 👏🏻👏🏻 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Wow! I must definitely have an extended version then. So yes, I‘ll read that one and we can compare notes as we go. See if the additions are great or just extraneous. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It‘s a plan!! From what I understand, your version is closer to King‘s original manuscript. His publisher forced him to cut lots of it b/c they didn‘t think a massive book would sell. They didn‘t get him ... yet. And once he had the track record to take control, he “fixed” the book. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Yes, that‘s what he said in a note at the beginning. He says some thought The Stand was too long to begin with, so don‘t get this book if that was you....but otherwise, it‘s the version he first wrote, without the cuts the “original” version had. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage 👍🏻 Makes sense. He writes good Author‘s Notes in many of his books. 6y

Pickpick

As we start on book three I figured I should comment on finishing this. I enjoyed this one more than Pale Horse - in part because it was a bit more humorous- especially Anthony poking fun at all the tropes of SFF. BEMs ala Stormship Troopers! The sexism is still there but a bit less too. It has been years but I‘m starting to remember the threads that connect the characters. thoughts on the authors notes of either book? #incarnationsChapterADay?

CSeydel Ok I‘m going to just put in my bio that I am The Worst Buddy Read Partner Ever. I finally got my library situation sorted out (😡) and I‘m reading On A Pale Horse *now*. I read the first half today and I‘m a little disappointed ... it‘s not living up to my memory ... then again Death wasn‘t my favorite of the series even then. 6y
Ubookquitous Lol yeah, I think the series improves as it goes, particularly around the interweaving of plot. No worries on timing. Life happens 🤷🏼‍♀️ 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CSeydel Yep, I finished up my other book last night (for my other buddy read), so hopeful can finish a short story I have going tonight, so catching up with this one is next for me too. I‘ll join you on being late and we can read Bearing the Hourglass together! I too apologize @Ubookquitous we‘re still with you. I am just apparently a horrible judge of my reading commitments, I #BlameLitsy 6y

Ubookquitous Lol I get that... I‘m going to see who else is still with us and may put it off for a bit... let you catch up. I‘ll let you know 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Ubookquitous Ok, sounds good. I‘m hoping to try and catch up here this next week, before the end of Oct 🤞. How about you @CSeydel ? 6y
CSeydel @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Ubookquitous Oof. Maybe. I just got back from a conference and I acquired 2 new clients, plus courting two others. Plus a new assignment from an existing client. I‘m trying, but no promises 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CSeydel 👍that works too, no pressure. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CSeydel OMG...sorry, I just realized there were only 5 days left on Oct! 😂. For some reason I was thinking we had over a week left, with 2 weekends. 😂. Wishful thinking I guess. 6y
CSeydel Yeah it‘s coming up fast!!! I‘m hoping to finish Pale Horse & Hourglass by Oct 31, and Tangled Skein & Red Sword by Nov 15? Buuuuuut I also have to finish Pachinko for my in-person book club by Nov 14 so let‘s call it a maybe 😬 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa (edited) 6y
