I did not think I‘d pan a Maggie O book, but this is a true #SophomoreSlump in her otherwise fantastic career. Characters with no depth. Motivations that don‘t make any sense. Several silly highly dramatic fainting spells. 🙄🙄 I think the best move of her career was to go from romance to historical fiction.
Shoutout to this copy that‘s been in my library‘s catalog since June 11, 2003, which is amazing because my library has a lot of turnover!
Really quite gripping at times, not the typical ex girlfriend scenario.
Very descriptive in writing and invoked a lot of tension and feeling.
I feel it's quite different to more recent ones I've read by O'Farrell
I‘ve read every novel Maggie O‘Farrell has written, and credit her with getting me started as an adult reader, but I read her early ones such a long time ago I don‘t remember them. So, I‘m doing a reread - this one first! What‘s interesting is I didn‘t love this one now - I found the story a bit odd and the writing overdone - but remember loving it all those years ago in 2003. (2003! There‘s smoking in pubs, and landlines!)

IT was very amazing ...,
My least favourite of O‘Farrell‘s #stories . Wonderfully written but just not the plot for me.
Can‘t say anything else without giving it away!!

New reading plan - ABC reading!
I have a TBR bookcase, & I like to pull the ones I plan on reading for the month to the top.
I was working on #nonfictionnovember, but I'm scrapping that plan.
For the forseeable future, I'm pulling books alphabetically by author. Once they're on the top shelf, the next one pulled is the next letter in the alphabet.
But I can take one off the top shelf in any order I like.
So I'm starting with Maggie O'Farrell❤️
