Words on Bathroom Walls
Words on Bathroom Walls | Julia Walton
Fans of More Happy Than Not, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and Its Kind of a Funny Story will cheer for Adam as he struggles with schizophrenia in this brilliantly honest and unexpectedly funny debut. Adam has just been diagnosed with schizophrenia. He sees and hears people who arent there: Rebecca, a beautiful girl who understands him; the Mob Boss, who harasses him; and Jason, the naked guy whos unfailingly polite. It should be easy to separate the real from the not real, but Adam can't. Still, theres hope. As Adam starts fresh at a new school, he begins a drug trial that helps him ignore his visions. Suddenly everything seems possible, even love. When he meets Maya, a fiercely intelligent girl, he desperately wants to be the great guy that she thinks he is. But then the miracle drug begins to fail, and Adam will do anything to keep Maya from discovering his secret. "A brutal, beautiful book that sits right beside The Perks of Being a Wallflower and I'll Give You the Sun." --Jennifer Longo, author of Up to This Pointe "This book reminds me of A Monster Calls. I saved the final twenty pages for the next day because I didn't want Adam's story to end." --Peter Brown Hoffmeister, author of This Is the Part Where You Laugh From the Hardcover edition.

I saw this was being made into a movie so I moved it up on the TBR. I‘m sad it took me this long to get to it because it was really interesting topic to talk about especially in YA. I haven‘t read a lot of books where the the main character is diagnosed with Schizophrenia,so I don‘t have anything to compare. I thought it was written well and is done so in journal entries. I felt for Adam a lot and wanted more of him and his family/friend.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love the way schizophrenia is depicted in this book. I could relate to Adam with having to deal with your mind and having to deal with meds to keep your symptoms at bay. I‘m not schizophrenic, but I do have bipolar disorder, so it is nice seeing mental illness shown in a good light. Hopefully we can break the stigma.

Saw the preview for this movie, & decided I needed to read the book first. It was absolutely stunning. Schizophrenia is an extremely misunderstood disease that‘s often misrepresented in literature. There were a ton of ways this book could have gone south in terms of cliches— both having to do with the disease & also genre. But it didn‘t. Adam is a very sweet and truly likable protag. Loved his relations with other characters, too.

Finally a story that does not depict schizophrenic people as psychopaths. I can imagine that for people who deal with the disorder on a daily basis, this is a very welcome book. Looking forward to the movie as well, lots of freedom for the creators on how to visualise the hallucinations. Definately a good pick!

A funny, honest and realistic read depicting what it‘s be like to live with schizophrenia.

Told through the unfiltered and expressive journal entries of our protagonist Adam, I loved seeing inside his mind, his thoughts teetering between despair and humor, and loved his self-awareness to the state of his mind. The author successfully brings awareness to the manifestation of schizophrenia while debunking the negative stereotypes that surround it.

Relatable, heartfelt, witty and real. I feel as if any reader could sympathize with the Adam for feeling "abnormal" or different. This book was very well written, and laugh out loud funny at times. I'm teetering between a 3 to 4 rating because I've read so many books lately that evoked similar feelings, but I will round up to 4.

I really loved this one and read it every second I could. The first person narrative in the form of letters to Adam's therapist made him a real and vulnerable character. Walton's descriptions of Adam's schizophrenic hallucinations were vivid and vibrant, and although this was a serious subject, there were several laugh-out-loud moments. I also appreciated that the love interest, Maya, wasn't a caricature and was more than just "nerdy" or "pretty".

Kaylamburson Hmm good question. I think you'll have a lot to discuss regarding mental health & our system today, in addition to how those afflicted are viewed by society. There's a slight religious aspect (attends a Catholic school), but there might be some moments that could be viewed offensively by a strong catholic. At the end, I didn't feel a strong need to discuss it like I do with some books, but it'd be easy to have a full conversation. @TheBookKeepers 6y

This one was really really good guys! I got it in an Uppercase Box awhile back now and kept overlooking it. I‘m so glad I finally picked it up. Told in journal entries to his therapist, it chronicles the life of a teenager with schizophrenia. I may or may not have cried my way through the last five chapters. 5⭐️

There were so many memorable quotes from this book!! It‘s told from the mind of a schizophrenic boy who is put on different drug regimens. We see him struggling with his own reality - HIS normal - and trying to conform into what society considers normal, such as falling in love, being bullied by the “popular kids who come from money”, etc. Would definitely recommend for anyone to read.

Funny, honest and very eye opening. A brilliant story about a teenage boys struggles with schizophrenia.
Some of the things Adam said were just fantastic!

"The important thing about being crazy is knowing that you're crazy. The knowing part makes you less crazy."

"J.K. Rowling is a fucking genius. Anyone who doesn't think so is crazy."

Wow! I don't even know where to start with reviewing this book. I feel like this is an important book bringing awareness of metal illnesses. Adam is in high school and has just been diagnosed with being paranoid schizophrenic. He is learning to live with it. But he doesn't what the people at his new high school to know about his illness. But when he meets Maya he starts to have feeling for her but doesn't want her to know. Such a powerful read!

I expected to like this book, but I did not expect all the feels. First of all, it was so nice having a young adult novel written in the male voice. But on top of that, there are so many quotes you can pick out that don't just apply to people with mental illnesses; you could adapt it to any marginalised or oppressed group and it would ring true. I loved it, and I totally didn't cry.

I related to a lot in this book. So many good lines about mental health. Adam was such a great character to get to know, and I love how he says what comes to mind, without a filter. I feel like Ian could‘ve had more backstory and development, and maybe he was struggling with his own stuff as well. Overall great book, I won‘t forget this one!

3/5. this was really interesting, and i think it‘s important to read books about other kinds of mental illnesses like schizophrenia. i liked it and thought that the character was well-written and funny, but i just didn‘t love it for no particular reason. if i had bought this book, i probably would have donated it later on.
