The Phantom of the Opera is a celebrated Gothic Romance novel by French author Gaston Leroux, first published in 1910. In this his masterpiece, Leroux delivers a mesmerising thriller, exploring themes of romantic love, obsession and violence. Following her spectacular debut, the rumours of a ghost haunting the labyrinthine depths of the Paris Opera seem to become a reality, when young singer Christine Daaé vanishes.

Bail at 47%.... I hate to bail, I do! 😔
I love the Phantom of the Opera musical. So I was excited to try the book. It just wasn't to my taste at all. I found it hard to follow, and I was finding it such a chore to read. This novel has made me really appreciate the absolute genius of Andrew Lloyd Webber.

I appreciate it's a much loved classic, but it's just not for me, unfortunately! I may re-listen to the soundtrack, so that counts, right?! 🤣

LiteraryinPA Hey, you tried! 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6mo
dabbe #hailthebail! #betterbooksahead I tried this and felt the same way. I also had the same experience with LES MIS. I saw both musicals on Broadway and just couldn't withstand the dense writing in the books. Maybe if I'd read them 1st ... 🤔 6mo
jamield1911 @dabbe I initially wondered if it was a little confusing in.parts due to it's age and being translated. But I just found the plot and writing all over the place. Just not for me. I'll stick to the musical! 🤣 6mo

There is no shortage of drama queens to choose from in The Phantom of the Opera. I just love to hate our Prima Donna, Carlotta, and honestly I chose this track because Notes makes me laugh every time I listen to it. #dramaqueen #titlesandtunes

Finished it, and did enjoy the second and third quarter, but the story was really let down by this edition‘s translator.

A lot of questionable themes (disability, child labour, orientalism, suicide and related ideation), but also fascinating insight into stage craft, French arts and history of the time period.

It still feels good to finish a book I didn‘t always enjoy, as it‘s a good reminder to be able to articulate WHY. (self-reminder!)

Dark, borderline gothic and passionate!
It's fast paced and fairly short, the mystery and atmosphere was so good and I loved the plot. I tabbed so many quotes, the writing was simple yet effective. It also had some good philosophical points and the ending wrapped up nicely. I'm now off to watch the adaptation of it!

I know life is short and too short for books we don‘t enjoy, but really enjoying reading mindfully and actually being able to articulate why certain themes or narratives aren‘t compelling.

Started trying to read on the train as part of anytime I commute, and noticing that being able to focus on the text, and block out others‘ conversations is also a skill!

Not super-enjoying this but glad to be experiencing. Cats are excellent motivators too!

Reading before bed is something I‘ve not done in forever so am trying to cultivate it as a habit to spend less time watching stuff on laptop.

It‘s been going pretty well! Finding it hard to get into as there seems to be odd spots where it doesn‘t seem well translated from French into English (US English? it‘s been inconsistent)…also not sure I‘d recommend this to children (maybe pre-teen and up?).

The ghost in the Paris Opera existed. He was not, as was long believed, a delusion of the singers, a superstition of the managers, or a ludicrous fantasy concocted by the overheated brains of the dancers in the corps de ballet, their mothers, the ushers, the cloakroom attendants, and the concierge.

#OnThisDay in 1908 Gaston Leroux' The Phantom of the Opera began serialization in Le Gaulois. Leroux's inspiration for the tale came from a real fire which caused a chandelier to crash, and rumors of ghosts haunting Paris' famed Palais Garnier. The story was not immediately successful, but slowly grew a sort of cult fan base. (Cont'd in comments) #HistoryGetsLIT

TheKidUpstairs To date, it has been adapted into just about every medium available (please do yourself a favor and check out the poster for Robert Englund's Phantom) including the longest running show on Broadway. 2y

J'en avais besoin, car j'avais de la difficulté à lire à cause de la lumière. Puis, j'entendais en même temps de lire le chant des oiseaux, ce qui m'a permis de profiter de l'extérieur et de lire en toute tranquillité.

Absolutely stunning! A work of ever shifting themes and focus, wherein, I can say, there are many many villains, yet only one hero who will defy expectations. Part romance, part humor, part mystery and thriller and horror and philosophical musing—THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is divine and a wonderful start to my book reading this year!

🎧 I saw Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s The Phantom of the Opera 3X at the Civic Opera House in Chicago. All the stars!

Yesterday I listened to the book. The narrator was mediocre. No singing or music. The 4th wall is broken & the narrator speaks to us as though he‘s recalling facts. 20% in the pace picks up & suddenly the story fell into my limited knowledge base.

It was what I expected yet with more detail.

I‘m on a 3-star kick lately.

⭐️⭐️⭐️3/4 👇🏻

Twainy I can‘t believe I‘m going to say this & maybe it‘s because they‘re just different mediums .... the book was not better than ALW‘s masterwork. Still worth a read or listen. I enjoyed both. As for movies ... Gerard Butler was nice to look at of course but I love me some B movies!! Hammer House W00T & Lon Chaney IS The hideous Phantom in my book! He applied his own makeup for that role! 🖤 😁 😈 (edited) 3y

" The Phantom of the Opera " As a recommendation from my girlfriend @HellGL ,I've started to read this book (in Romanian) with pretty much enthusiasm and I finished describing it as one of the best books I've ever read. What I really, really loved was how the villain was placed in this story. It was something different for me and I can easily call it masterpiece?.

Funny in parts, scientific in others and a bit confused overall, this book was a mixed bag, but in a good way. I wouldn't put it in the list of must-read classics, but it was entertaining to learn so much about the Paris Opera House. If there's one thing I do find commendable, it's Leroux's ability to set the scene. And I felt really sorry for Erik - why do classic writers always give their most inspired characters the shorter end of the stick?
