pickIt was hard for me to get into, but it was a quick and easy read after that. I felt deeply for Adeline and her childhood. I wished to give her a hug so many times throughout this read. Yet, I was slightly dissatisfied with the abrupt ending; however, this is just about her childhood which makes it understandable. I want to read more about her life and can‘t wait to read her autobiography ‘Falling Leaves‘.

pickI am dreadfully behind on sharing reviews here but this was a great book and perfect for #readharder as a #yanonfiction! It's terribly sad for a lot of it, but that comes with the striking similarity to Cinderella, though turning it all around was not done the same way.
This is a true story of the author's childhood where she was ‘hated and despised by her family because she is believed to be the cause of her mothers death.‘ It tells of her struggle for acceptance and the consequences in her adult life.

My third time reading through this letter addressed to the scared little girl living inside each of us, my tears flowed as never before.
This is the type of book that wretches you heart so brutally that you want to fling it out the window, yet you stay your hand, because somehow in these heartfelt pages, you see traces of your own story.

This is one of my 14 year old‘s school readings. As she was adopted from China, we had some deep discussions about “unwanted” children - both kept by biological family and given up by biological family.

Adeline is the youngest daughter, but she is also the family punching bag. Her mother died in childbirth with her so she is considered unlucky. Adeline is mistreated by all except her grandfather and aunt.
She is forced to live with any number of indignities and outright cruelties. As she struggles, she uses school to show her worth. Her family continues to make her suffer.
It is a story of ultimate triumph. Well told. It's for YA.
pickThis YA memoir illustrates well the injustices inherent in favoring some siblings over others. In this case, the author and her four older siblings --the children of the dead first wife-- were given the bare minimum, while the two children of the young, fashionable second wife were treated like royalty. The most interesting aspect of the book is the look at Chinese history and culture, including the notes about the writing system. I enjoyed it.
