Romeo and Juliet | 
pickAlthough plays are meant to be seen, R&J has been so overdone that it was great to slow down and really enjoy the language by reading it with #shakespearereadalong. The beautiful imagery and witty comedic dialog never get old. In reading vs. watching, you also can't be distracted by the much older actors in most productions and remember that these were two kids dead because of the absurd hatred and customs of older generations.
"There is thy gold--worse poison to men's souls, Doing more murder in this loathsome world Than these poor compounds that thou mayest not sell. I sell thee poison; thou hast sold me none." I love this speech from Romeo when he buys poison. Money is no doubt largely the reason the Montagues and Capulets, the two richest families in the area, started fighting in the first place. #shakespearereadalong
pickI love this. I realize there are problems with it. Just like everything else it‘s not perfect. I have heard plenty of arguments over it. But when you get down to it it is great. I don‘t think there is a story from Shakespeare I didn‘t.

My first lesson that I get to teach in 2021 is Romeo and Juliet for English 9. I have taught this twice now, and each time I've been asked to approach it in a completely different way. This time, the school wants the summative assessment to be an argumentative essay.
Time to read it again through that lens and see what I can come up with!
pickStarting to unwind because I didn‘t know where I was or what day it was when I woke up this morning. May have also been thanks to the amount of wine consumed last night. The silly season is my favourite time of year.
so-so've managed to live almost four decades without reading or watching this classic and I was pretty excited to get going. On paper this is my ideal story, boy meets girl, girl already has boy. In reality this wasnt my ideal at all, the play format is really not my jam and the theres only so much of 'yee art thou donkey' language that I can take.
pickIt was based on pure and eternal love. It proves the vow of “till death do us part“. It was a tragic love story. A young couple who were so inlove with each other and willing to risk everything for the sake of their love. It was also tackled in the story how we should learn to settle personal disputes as much as we could and as much as early as possible to avoid further disaster that would lead to a much bigger loss including lives.
pickAfter reading If we were Villains I decided to read all the plays mentioned in the book. As I've never read any of Shakespeare's work.
And with Audible being nice and giving free access to some of the classics I picked this one up first.

When I hear #Lovefool my mind immediately thinks of the 1996 movie adaption of Romeo and Juliet staring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.

pickJust watched Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet with a live choir at Union Chapel in Islington. It was so good and the venue was stunning will definitely be looking out for more Backyard Cinema events.
