Romeo & Juliet | William Shakespeare

Dear Purists: Please be kind.

I really liked this adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, set in the suburb of Verona Beach. I love the dissonance between the modern characters, props, and setting and the Shakespearean English dialogue of the original play. It made for a surreal and beautiful experience that played well to my literary and artistic senses.

Pogue This was one of my favorite adaptations. It shows how the story is essentially about gangs and their fights, not about Romance. 5y
Cinfhen And the soundtrack was fantastic 🤟🏼 5y
Brooke_H And Harold Parrineau is so good as Mercurio! 5y

KathyWheeler I loved this version. 5y
madamereadsalot1 I adore this version! 5y
Clare-Dragonfly As a snobby teenager, I hated this version. But I‘ve seen it many times since and love it now. My teacher friend says that it‘s the most faithful adaptation, line for line, of the play. 5y
BookishTrish I lived this movie. Have you heard Claire Danes read The Handmaid‘s Tale? 5y
Soubhiville I love this movie too! I can‘t say how many times I‘ve watched it. 💔❤️ 5y
PaperbackPirate Another fan of the movie & soundtrack! I don‘t think you need to apologize. 5y
TheKidUpstairs I LOVE this movie. And as @PaperbackPirate said, it's got a great soundtrack! 5y
TheKidUpstairs @Pogue yes! I hate when people hold this up as the ultimate love story/romance. It's a bloody tragedy!!! 5y
TheKidUpstairs @Brooke_H he was perfection in that role. 5y
ravenlee I was ambivalent about this movie when it came out but I wore out the soundtrack (on cassette!). 5y
Centique I loved this movie too! Baz Luhrmann has a unique touch. Have you seen Strictly Ballroom? It‘s over the top but also sweet and fabulous. 😍 5y
LiterRohde @Centique I have not. 5y
LiterRohde @PaperbackPirate Thank you for the support! I didn‘t expect too much pushback from Littens, so the comment was a bit tongue in cheek, but some people are so adamant about not messing with the “original”. 5y
LiterRohde @BookishTrish I have not. But I can see how she would be a good choice as narrator. 5y
PaperbackPirate @LiterRohde I think it shows the quality of the story if it‘s still relevant today, so if there is a grump tell them to take it as a compliment! 😁 5y
