pickWhile we‘re all familiar with the enslavement of Africans in North America (and elsewhere), starting with the Spanish in the Caribbean, there was also enslavement of Indians in the Americas. This book looks at that enslavement into Mexico then the (future) southwestern US. Dense but incredibly readable, this is a great look at a lost piece of history.

Korean slavery in Mexico during the 20th century. I've never heard of this.
pickThis has probably been the densest nonfiction I've read in years. But it was so interesting. You see and hear 'wild west' stories and all these movies but no one ever really talks about how it was. We have such a romanticized view. It's pretty shocking, and the sources and numbers are great. If it's interesting to you and you don't mind dense books, grab this one.

pickReally well-researched and documented story about indigenous slavery in the Americas. Starts with the Spanish in the Caribbean and proceeds through Mexico and the American West. It's academic but not hard to read. And the story will add to your knowledge of the settlement of the "new world." so much violence and heartbreak.

Reading more indigenous history this month. #noDAPL has got me wanting to know more.
For #IndigenousPeoplesDay I am recommending books about indigenous issues. They don't get enough press, let alone respect in this country, even from the government. Native sovereignty is a big issue, one in discussion again with the DAPL, as are the government's atrocities against native tribes, from enslavement (yes they were slaves), to rape/sex & child trafficking, to displacement, & cultural appropriation. Unlearn what you were taught. 👇🏽✊🏽
Had to make a special request to the library to get the e-book and now I have it. I've been trying to get through "The Glass Palace" for a while now, I let it go once for Elena Ferrante. Do I forsake Palace again? (I'm a slow reader and not sure I can do 800 + pages of both books in 21 days.
